Wow! That sounds awesome! That RCA is perfect for your vocals. What was the chain for each mic?

It’s a great mic. It gets used on nearly all of my vocals. You sound great on anything though, John.

There are folks around here who are much better at routing issues that I am, but I have always done headphone mixes using two auxes out to my little Presonus HP4.

Dogears, there are a number of things that I do that make a console very useful. I don't use a console for tracking since I have a number of outboard pres. I find that it is just the simplest way to integrate hardware during mixing. I move the faders when I mix, but I do most of my automation ITB. I also like to monitor vocals while tracking with a bit of reverb from my TC4000, which is very simple when using a console. Setting up headphone mixes when tracking a live band is also much easier with a console. I've looked at all of the summing solutions ad nauseum, but I just can't find one that does everything I need to do.

I'm getting ready to order a Cadac Live to replace my Ghost. It seems to have everything I need and gets good reports on the sonic front. I'll report back once I receive it and run it through its paces.

Well, maybe I need to learn to use Maestro. I’m on a Symphony I.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I never mess with Maestro. When tracking, I use low latency mode in Logic and have never had any problems with latency.

just zip up the folder. I have all of my logic projects set to automatically add any audio files I drag into the project to the Audio folder so all assets are local to the .logicx file so I never have issues with missing assets. there are a lot of 0s in PCM files, so they compress a lot. Chuck, how do you do this in Logic? Thanks.

Samplitude is a fabulous program. I used it for many years before switching to a Mac and Logic. If Samplitude was cross platform and competently marketed, I think it would have a much larger user base.

I was recently shocked when I discovered how much better my TC4000 sounds when I bring the returns to a channel rather than an EFX return. The difference is not subtle.

Dr. Sax, How high are your ceilings? I've been wanting to get a pair of Coles to use for overheads, but worry that my ceiling is too low. Just under 8 feet. The GIK acoustic panels on the ceiling made a huge difference. Been getting killer drum tones in this room. Thanks. That’s great news. My ceiling is the same height and I also have GIK panels over my kit.

I'll second the Music Tech Help Guy video series. When I switched to Logic a few years ago I watched each of those, took notes, and made cheat sheets. I probably should look back over those because I'm sure I forget shortcuts that would make life easier, but those are very good resources.

I grew up playing a Baldwin Acrosonic. It was the most toneless piece of firewood I have ever played. The best uprights I have played are the Yamaha U series, and you won’t get one of those for free.

Look for a Hammond A100 series. They are the same guts as a B3 and C3, but have a built-in tone cabinet. They are bargains, selling for far less than B3s. Same sound, 1/3 the price.
Pianos are hard. If you are not a player, at least take a player with you. There is a lot of junk out there. Good luck.

If anyone is looking for a new boutique handwired Vox, I have a Valvetech Hayseed 30, that I highly recommend. Rob at Valvetech is a great guy.

The Ravenscroft is pretty fabulous. Sonic Couture's Clav is the best that I've heard. I would love to hear the Keyscape stuff, but I have a real Rhodes and Wurly, so I don't know that it would get much use.

Yea, I haven't seen anybody chain smoke like that in a long time. Glad I never picked up the habit.

I know part of what the distressor is all about is distortion, but I would really like to hear a JW modded Distressor! They can also be really clean without the harmonics buttons engaged and setting dependent. The distressor certainly has a sound, but I've always found the distortion modes to be pretty subtle. We're not talking obvious fuzz box kind of stuff.

EV RE20, Sennheiser 421s, Beyer M160s and Coles 4038s are all mighty useful.

Update: I decided to go 24 I/O of good ole Apogee Symphony MK1 Thunderbridge. Couldn't be happier. If I can't make music with this rig, I can't make music. Rock solid. Yep. This is rock solid for me as well.

I just started doing this based upon Bob's advice. I haven't done enough with it yet to determine if I can hear a difference.
