I have a pair of EV 635a's that primary get used to stereo mic the top of my Leslie. They don't seem to win out on much else, but I should probably try them under a snare sometime.

I think it's pretty flat. It may have a bit of a presence peak in the 5-8k range, but it's the flattest of the major dynamics (although I've never used a 441).

I had a KAT4 system for over 10 years and liked it. I had the 67M, 251, 47, and C12 heads. The 67M (M is for modified for my extended highs and lows that a stock 67) and 251 heads were superb. The C12 head was decent, but I didn't use it much. The 47 head never sounded right. It sounded like it was trying too hard to sound vintage. It had a very muffled sound.
There were two downsides to the KAT system that ultimately led me to trade mine for a Flea 47. First, I never really liked the process of swapping the heads. They are not as easy to get off and on as you may be led to believe. Mine required some significant pulling and pushing to change the capsules. This always made me nervous.
The second and most important factor in my going a different direction was the Korby's service, or lack thereof. I had a couple of times when the mic wasn't acting right and I sent it in for service. I completed one of the service forms on their website and heard back in a couple of days that I should send in the mics and that the turn around time would be about two weeks. Each time, it was more like 4-6 months before I received the mic back. During that stressful time period, I would follow-up with phone calls and emails to Kimberly Korby, who handles these things. I've never talked to Tracy. In all the times I called, they never once answered the phone. The only communication I had was via email and those emails were untimely, sporadic and generally uninformative. I got the distinct impression that Tracy doesn't tell Kimberly what is going on with the mics and then she is put in the unenviable position of having to field customer requests without any real information.
If service had been more reliable, I likely would have kept mine. I still miss the 67M capsule and feel that it may be the finest mic on my voice I have heard.
Best of luck.

Of the mics I own, I think the 414 B-ULS, the KM84 and the RE20 all seem as flat as I would want to hear.

TI PCM4222EVM $149. Add a power supply and go. Jim, I always appreciate your expertise and am curious about your recommendations in this regard. As someone who is technically challenged, how would a person go about racking one of these up? Are there any manufacturers currently using this chip? Thanks.
