Haven't tried, but I'm REALLY glad I didn't buy Arouser now. Wish he'd come with an SSL Bus comp with sidechain...

I only got to play with it for about 10 minutes but it definitely did the thing to vocals that the Distressor does! It also did a really cool thing to the 2-bus.

It’s $200 if you don’t have a slate subscription

Everybody was moaning since last year, but good things need time. I will try tomorow have other things to do right now. I never worked with the HW. Do you have any introducing words about the way the Distressor works? Whats your favourte apllication for it? Cheers Holmes

It’s $200 if you don’t have a slate subscription Not to have the Slate monthly subs. plan is nuts. I just can say it saves cash and I always get latest tools. I also get updatet algos of older tools. 2017 we got: Verb suite. 3 Times Tube Saturation. Distressor. I like if people do what they promise and SS is one of those.

Haven't tried, but I'm REALLY glad I didn't buy Arouser now. Wish he'd come with an SSL Bus comp with sidechain... I've got the Arouser plug, and it seems to be more feature rich than the Slate. Version 2.0 just dropped, but I haven't installed. I bought it second hand for around $215. I think it's on sale right now for $249, which I think should be the normal price. Slates is $249 too, right? Of course, if you're on his subscription plan already, then this is a total win for you.

Cheers Holmes If I were forced to pick only one compressor to work with it would be the Distressor. It's just such a Swiss Army knife. From subtle to obviously Nuke. The main thing I love about the Distressor is the mid range detector circuit. It just smooths out a vocal like no other compressor does IMO. Adding a little distortion to the circuit is especially cool at mix down. I think most folks will be happy with it.

Is the midrange detector thing one of the newer features on distressors? I had one ten plus years ago and don’t remember that. It makes me want the hardware again.

Yeah under the hpf and above the detector button on the hw... I am interested in the arousor vs distressor so I can make a purchase ... can’t demo both simultaneously unfortunately...

I've used Distressors a few times over the years and always liked them. But since getting a pair recently I LOVE them. They would I think be the last comps to leave my rack. I messed with FG-Stress for a few minutes this evening and it sounds really really good to me. Don't have time to do any serious comparing right now but I think they did a great job on this. Sounds very, very Distressor-y.

I've been doing some comparisons between this, Novatron, Deflector, Arouser, and Disto. To me they're all great and can kinda get the same sound. Mostly I've been using them to master. I did do some comparisons with a vocal I recorded to go with my Hysteria wav file ripped from a karaoke cd. Novatron got a much bigger and smoother sound that was more even in dynamics. CLA76 black would let in some muddy and hissy frequencies and FG-Stress does too, even with the detector on. Deflector is even more polite, so I put that on the backing vocal track. Next I'll try Disto. Arouser has been a lot less intuitive to me than FG-Stress and takes more work to get a good sound. And even then, I find myself liking the result less than what I get with the other 4 more often than not. Still, got a lot of different stuff to try these on before the demos expire. I may end up getting Disto V3 or do a Kush subscription until I find Novatron cheaper or some other company releases a product I like just as much or better for less money. I'd be a lot more apt to buy an annual subscription if companies were giving you enough credit in their webstore to permanently own one after the year is up the way Slate was doing. Anyway, I'd encourage you all to try Disto before throwing down $150 or $200 on something else, I don't find it to be inferior at all and the updated V2 and V3 might even be significantly better than the current V2.

Like Visiousbliss mentioned, Disto is one hellova piece of kit, and for only 39 bucks V2 has been a mainstay by itself or tag-teamed with my WA76 to keep it smoooooth. I didn't realize Sardo concocted a V3. I wonder what is different and/or "better"?

I messed with FG-Stress for a few minutes this evening and it sounds really really good to me. Don't have time to do any serious comparing right now but I think they did a great job on this. Sounds very, very Distressor-y. If you're going to shoot out the FG-Stress with a hardware unit you need to calibrate it properly. See below from Steven Slate on Facebook: "After a strenuous two years of work, its important for us to demonstrate how closely the software matches the hardware. We decided to take a unique approach, something that no other DSP company has done. Rather than provide audio examples that we internally matched with our own hardware, we gave some audio files to Distressor users and had THEM process the files with THEIR hardware, and then we matched it with the FG-Stress. Matching compressors is not a simple task, because the tiniest discrepancy in settings will exhibit a different tone, fooling someone into thinking that things don't match, when it's simply an issue of hearing two slightly different settings. This is even more dramatic on the Distressor for two reasons. First, the knobs are very tweaky. If two units are set exactly the same minus about 1/2db difference in gain reduction, it will sound audibly different. Same with the timings.. if the attack times are internally just a few mini clicks different, you'll hear a dramatic difference. The second reason is that the Distressor uses continuous pots, and matching the knob settings does not always result in the same internal settings. This is due to pot tolerances and general production run tolerances. For instance, one unit's attack on "5" may equal another unit's attack on "4.5", and so on. So the first step in matching was to calibrate the gain reduction of the user Distressor to the FG-Stress (since using differently calibrated converters will alter the gain reduction). We provided a calibration package and video, which I will demand that any user who is serious about comparing their hardware to the software should use. Here is the calibration package links: Calibration Files: download.slatedigital.com/…/FG-Stress%20Calibration%…Calibration Video: Calibration Instructions: stevenslatemedia.com/…/FG-Stress-Calibration-Procedu…AUDIO COMPARISONS PAGE: slatedigital.com/fg-stress-audio-comparisons/If you own the hardware, it is our guarantee that you will be able to match it with the software minus some possibly minimal discrepancy due to converter differences. Please follow the calibration procedure first. If you have trouble matching your hardware, please contact support and we'll match it for you. Many times, the attack and release have to be set by ear if you are using intermediate settings between 10.5 and 0."

Quinto is claiming V2 will be optimized and still contain features of both the Distressor and Fatso. V3 will be "cleaner" and more "faithful" to the original Distressor. It's supposed to be an officially licensed version like FG-Stress. Quinto is looking for hardware owners so he can run some tests and get it as close as possible.

Had the time to toy around with it. Holy cow I used it in parallel at a snare bus 4:1 Att: 3,5 Release 0 and pushed it until it said it 14 db of GR. I blended this in about 60% in parallel checkd the gain setting to not fool my ear by just beeing just stpuid louder.
WTF the distressor brings the sanre to a whole diffrent sound, it opens it up and it gets wide and open, and it ads some beautifeul weight to the hits.
It feels more like a tone and transient shaper?

Used Novatron and FG-Stress on all tracks for an Alice In Chains song where I had 2 drum, 1 bass, 4 guitar, and 3 vocal tracks going at all times. There just wasn't any contest. Novatron made it all sound like one big, thick, cohesive whole where dynamics were near perfect and harsh frequencies barely there. The vocal harmonies were all one take each and took a lot of effort to line up. But Novatron took it to a whole nother level of cohesiveness. I could also make eq cuts to the harsh regions on bx_console without robbing the high frequency energy as was happening before on this session. Replacing CLA76 Black with Novatron was a revelation on multiple sessions. FG-Stress on this same song just came across like a better version of the CLA76 on the vox. I could say it improved the instrument tracks some as it wasn't replacing anything. It's a lot harder to get a good sound with FG-Stress. Novatron at its default settings is pretty much instant gratification once you fix the levels. I may try running Deflector or Arouser on all tracks, but not sure there's a point now that I'm more familiar with their sound signatures and controls. Disto's current version may use too much cpu to go on a ton of stuff. I didn't find it that easy to work with when I've put it on just a vocal track recently.

Isn´t it with the tools that way that they dont work for everything always. At least I made this experience as a semi professional AE. I used FG Stress on heavyer rock guitars today for levling. This thing is a chameleon to me, if I cahnge anything on any knob it changes the whole tone the guitars. Just a damn little move on the input and MÄHHH tone I liked is gone. If that is the case with the hardware too I think SS did great job. Cant say I never used the HW.
