Recorded a cello with my CMV 563 the wrong way round. A tribute to the quality of the mic and the player that I didn't realise initially and that I can still use the take albeit somewhat compromised. I kept wondering why such a low level considering the gain i was using on the pre. ( recording in the same room and close to the instrument, monitoring on cans at a lowish level can be fraught - fooled by the bleed) . I did tell the artist and I made the call not to re-record as the cellist was time strapped - it ain't perfect but we'll live.

Not quite the forehead but I'll aim mine down to the mouth from at least 9' away rather that directly on axis, to minimise 'plosives - they're very touchy like that.

Thank you for the great replies guys; I specifically want it for fiddle and as Dr Bill will attest, whatever Michael Joly did to the cheap Apex 205, he made a great mic . hearing DR Bill's piano recording with it forced me to purchase. Cheers, Ross

Guys, My Michael Joly modded Apex 205 has lost it's mojo (volume and tone). I'd love to have him look at it but I'm in Australia and he's out of the game these days anyway. If anyone can suggest an Australian repair solution that would br cool; failing that , what's a great ribbon option to record fiddle (warm without bow edginess and/or self noise) at a cool price. The Royer R 10 piqued my interest as does the AEA R 84 - any one excited by anything on Fiddle without breaking the bank?

I'm biting the upgrade bullet when M1x is given a decent proving run in the field ; still on a 2010 MBP 17" running Snow Leopard but wanting to run new plugs and knowing wear and tear will get me one day but cant fault this machine for sure.

Hi guys, looking for 4 pencil condensors for an all male 12 piece choir who can't get used to the sm 58 paradigm and want to work up to 2 feet off the mics and just move in for highlights. One omni mic or a stereo pair need too much juice with a choir positioned so far off them and are hence subject to feedback ime. it's a choir raising money for charity so there's very little money . The important factors are; the mic's 'reach', price and sound in that order. The Rode M5 is incredibly cheap here right now and sounds fine on youtube clips but ive no idea on it's reach. Feed me your thoughts please. Cheers, Ross

I have the single with the eq patched in but normally bypassed to give it another transformer - it's one of those pieces you simply don't second guess and the support is tops

Yeah, well I beat you out Rowmat ( its an Aussie thing) - mine is a 2010 MBP still running Snow leopard (hang in for another couple of months baby) which has been stupidly stable but will be consigned to internet duties when M2 / M1 X is proven reliable. They'll sell a heap methinks.

FWIW, I'll aim to get the conventionally "main" mic sounding as right as I can and then stick up a 2nd in fig 8 (with the null working in with the main mic) which could even be a quasi over right shoulder or wherever; if it's a sparse arrangement stereo can be a good listen. But as Popmann says always check in mono.
As to M/S, it can often sound great but if your track is played through a mono set up, the great guitar sound is negated through the sides cancelling and the balance in the track can be cruelled depending on how loud you had the now cancelled sides.
It's a moving feast I find

If it's not speaking and hasn't over a long period; life's too short. Another point to respectfully rebut what Dr Bill says . If you were primarily a guitarist don't sell it but as I understand it you are not.
Keep and get what serves you , Mr songwriter / vocalist / producer / mixer. (of course it's only my opinion - grab the salt shaker.)
Cheers , Ross

gwlee said it succinctly John - "If it was a guitar that really spoke to you, you wouldn’t even be thinking about selling it."
Life is short and to have something so valuable sitting there is a waste of potential on a couple of levels. someone else will get a lot out of it and you'll have cash to spend on things you'll use.
My good friend and great guitarist in New Zealand has a custom shop Martin which he played a lot over a long period but never totally felt in sync with deep down. Played a slope shouldered Eastman in a shop
18 months ago, just doodling; it spoke to him and now the three times as pricey Martin doesn't get played at all ; he's also contemplating selling.
Don't look back. Cheers, Ross

From what I read achase , 16 gig with this chip is way more than traditional notions of 16 gig and an intel chip.
Many of us could probably be entirely happy with the 16 gig mini - not withstanding software incompatibilities, and if needed, add a dock for extra connections.
Wiz, if he desired, could have got by with a a bog standard 27" monitor and run it off the HDMI port thereby saving a heap of dosh and a TB port
Having said that, I'll wait till the faster M1X chips have had at least 6 months bedding in time and jump then; if my 2010 setup dies before then ; I'll get the M1.
Hopefully by M1X time, software has caught up.
Cheers , Ross
