Not to diss what any of you gentlemen are saying per se however I'd caution that internet reputations are opinions that might not necessarily be yours; thus I'd advise anybody in the market place to listen to possible options for themselves. Good recordings continue to be made on neumanns , genelecs et al and certainly they cut it as review systems - there is a lot to like about them - footprint / pro vibe / sound (so subjective) etc and in any case your cans are really useful as secondary confirmation if they leave you unsure.

Have you considered some very high end cans such as Focal clear pro / celestee etc. Cheers, Ross

It's all part of the reason why there's very little crap on here - we're (supposedly) old enough to know it's exactly that.

You're too funny Chris - are you saying they're very rare or is everything you do well done? Cheers, Ross

Yep singles with varying levels are great to stop the stereo distraction and focus on the essence of your sound. Cheers , Ross

Not to diss what you say Onicron 9 because your opinion is as valid as mine or anyone else for that matter but my experience of the 940 is they are over bright ; on the other hand if you could swing the dollars their 1540 is a thing of beauty in the mids and highs (and comfort) let down by a bit of a bottom end bump - It's a never ending search within my price realms.
Does anyone have any Focal "Listen Pro" experience; i'm in the market for new cans after my Shure 840s couldn't be repaired again - a solid 9 years until standing on them snapped the headband right at the earpiece swivel; a 3rd repair is looking unlikely.

John, I would say the 770s are good enough to give you enough. They aren't perfect but no can is and they make music sound good (if a bit smiley faced) Buy some good drugs ( joking!) Cheers, Ross

Dan has nailed a truly important point with less and right mics placed correctly; I'd also say if you are producing; a great arrangement where space is left for each other is a big winner. A perfect example of these points I'd encourage us all to listen to (from the 50's) is '16 tons' - the Tennessee Ernie Ford version. The marriage of drums and bass is superb and apart from a great arrangement, the mic placement was obviously spot on - blew me away how good this actually is for any era not just back then - it really stands up..
In particular answer to John's post; HPF can go further than you might expect e.g. strummed acoustic in a mix can often go up over 150hz - if it sounds right , it is.
Keep a great reference track on hand is a good one too; so easy to lose perspective.

The mongrels have no shame ; i just noticed they've copied the Beyer 770 headphones down to the same lighter coloured ear pads and using 770 in the title. Sorry if this skews the thread ; I wanted to get it off my chest. Cheers, Ross

The only downside with a km84 could be pops on vocals ; position correctly and on the right voice will sound expensive. (oops,it is - a little) Used mine on vox twice this week with a BAE pre - nice. Cheers, Ross

Get a great tech to make you exactly what you want - i used Rob Squire from Proharmonic in Aus and totally no issues in the several years i've had it. Cheers, Ross

That feels like a tracking set up you wont be second guessing Kcatt ; as you say, just get on with the music and if it sounds average it's the human in front of the mic.......

I'll take a counter view on the Bose - to my ears, they are not that great. The best use for them is on long haul flights where their noise cancelling is super - useful. A vastly different sound between the 2 modes I have to say. Purely as cans for listening , there are many better IMO; I'm not a big fan of AT MX50s but they come in a bluetooth version and my memory of them is they are a better can than the Bose e.g. YMMV Cheers, Ross

IME the 103 is very source specific; a low voice can sound fantastic and 'Pricey" but a more mid focused source can be nasal and sound like trash. I've no 107 experience but it looks interesting.

What it does tell me is that the Serrano is a great mic, the rest is just preference. Still havent' heard it put under high spl pressure aand Mark would make a tin can sound good but it seems that at that price it should be jumped all over.

Answered my own question and checked out Vintage King's vid. The vocals are not what i'd call pushing it but even with the singers there, the relative smoothness of the 67 was apparent with the slight upper mid edge of the Warm being enough to temper my enthusiasm; still pretty good at the price but not for me.
Cheers, Ross
P.S. Thanks KCat

What a great, sensible reviewer. My take is, with the limited sources it was a home run to the Warm; my big question is how it stands up under volume e.g. pushed and/or strident vocals - there is where the rubber meets the road. If it returned similar results to the above video I'd have to consider it. Anyone know of a decent sung vocal test?

Somewhat related, I'm mixing a client's track where the stereo piano sounds so good I asked her where and how she recorded it only to be told they did it VI in garage band. That's all well and good until it's mono'ed and there's significant cancellation so I'm mixing at a level that's slightly too high for stereo and a too low for mono to keep everybody(except me)happy. Any thoughts on that issue, should I just mix for stereo ? Cheers, Ross
