Most of you with an iPhone are gonna demand I leave this forum, never to return for calling myself an “engineer” and not knowing this... BUT, if you turn your iPhone horizontally instead of vertically while listening to music, you get Stereo!!! I found out accidentally while walking my dog. He pulled me a little, forcing me to change the orientation of my hand, and it was like disengaging the Mono button! Holy crap! Flame away, I deserve it! If this helps one other person on this forum, it will not have been a waste.
PS: Not sure how many models have a speaker on both ends. Mine is an iPhone 11.

Ha. I figured that out a while ago...but I don’t think there are speakers in both sides - some kind of witchery.

I'm still on a 7+, which doesn't seem to do this, but I have dealt with a really annoying and seemingly random behavior where hard-panned instruments will disappear from the mono mix for no reason.
I generally don't make mix decisions based on the iPhone speaker, but this specific thing has occasionally led me to make different panning choices.

There’s definitely two speakers at the bottom of the phone, and if you put your thumb over the speaker next to the front facing camera lens, you feel a pretty good vibration and lose the stereo effect.

I cut my iPhone up into several pieces, placed them around the lounge room and sat in the middle of the room but I’m damned if I get can get anything approximating surround sound.

The iPhone 11 and 12 have stereo sound. The small speaker at the top of the phone that you hold up to your ear for phone calls plays loud when you're playing audio or videos and is the other channel of the stereo. Another mix checker.

Somewhat related, I'm mixing a client's track where the stereo piano sounds so good I asked her where and how she recorded it only to be told they did it VI in garage band. That's all well and good until it's mono'ed and there's significant cancellation so I'm mixing at a level that's slightly too high for stereo and a too low for mono to keep everybody(except me)happy. Any thoughts on that issue, should I just mix for stereo ? Cheers, Ross

Cheers, Ross I would split the stereo piano track (assuming it’s a single stereo track) into seperate tracks (L&R) and check the track alignment around middle of the keyboard. Either nudge one side until the track alignment marries up with the other channel or try something like Auto Align if you have it.

Not sure if you’re hip to an App/plug-in called Audreio. Basically allows you to check your mixes through your phone from your DAW. Works great!
