Guys, My Michael Joly modded Apex 205 has lost it's mojo (volume and tone). I'd love to have him look at it but I'm in Australia and he's out of the game these days anyway. If anyone can suggest an Australian repair solution that would br cool; failing that , what's a great ribbon option to record fiddle (warm without bow edginess and/or self noise) at a cool price. The Royer R 10 piqued my interest as does the AEA R 84 - any one excited by anything on Fiddle without breaking the bank?
Cheers, Ross

Thanks Wiz, yeah i get Stewart from Xaudia in UK to service my older ribbon mics. Stewart is quick well priced and has endless experience and knowledge coming out of his eye balls.
Red dirt - do you know if the transformer has been upgraded? Or is it stock. I think those ones benefited from an upgraded Cinemag cm xxxx cant remember the model off hand. I ight even have a spare one sitting in the cupboard. And the apex 205 i think has the long motor ribbon. I think they were originally 2.5 microns thick. If you go for a 1.8 micron i think you will get slightly more top end reach . If its just a trannie and ribbon OPR should be fine he is even making his own trannies now. Do you have his details? Cheers

Overall tone was good and bow noise was nicely reduced. I wouldn't use it all the time, but it was good for this particular player.

I don’t normally choose a ribbon for a fiddle only it’s especially bright but of the budget ribbons I’ve owned/used, a Shinybox or Cascade Vin-Jet with Lundhal transformers are great budget options. I also really like Beyer M160’s but they are very directional which may be problematic if you move a lot while playing…

Cloud JRS-34P. Captures the wood in the mid tone beautifully and has a nice smooth 3D quality. Also my favorite electric guitar mic. I bet the JRS-34 active version is great too.

Sounds like a local re-ribbon is the answer, unless the mic isn't worth the expense. I like the Samar, the M130, if it's a really shrieky player then the Shure 300.

SAMAR AL-95 - detailed but smooth. Quite reasonably priced in the US - don't know about AUS. I'll second the Bumblebee Pro recommendation as well.

The r84 is really a killer mic. It has a sound to it. Big, soft but not overly so. Modern classic in my opinion. I got mine used mint at Alto on reverb. I need another. Also, the active version is probably killer if you want to avoid noise floor to a maximum.
Honestly, don't overlook cascade mics. I've gotten some great sounds with them, too.

You might want to check out the LRM2B sound samples over at NoHypeAudio. www.nohypeaudio.com/nhaproducts.htmI don't have that one, but I have the more RCA-inspired LRM-V (which is gorgeous), and the stereo SRM-1 which is a very good room mic.

Golden Age R1 Active is what I've been using on my fiddle lately. I like the results. This mic will work on anything though. Just a great mic at a great price. Reminds me of the sound of the U-67 I use to own. Not your typical ribbon mic for sure. I've owned most of the high end ribbons (except vintage) and I like this one best. Great on vocals as well. Hit the input hard on a 1073= money.
I find ribbons are by far the best for recording fiddle. Even the best players with the best fiddles can get scratchy on condensers. Ribbons tame that.

I’ve been sold on Artur Fisher’s Bumblebee Pro RM-6 ribbon mics for fiddle. Blumlein pair on fiddle is my go-to these days.

Samar AL-95 is the best ribbon for instruments I have ever used. The piston ribbon has a cleaner low end and clearer top end than traditional ribbons to my ear while still retaining that sweet natural tone of a ribbon. Great value. I love it on my strident voice as well. Perhaps my favorite mic right now.

Great recording. Thats the recording sound we all look for. I'm still on the hunt for the sound we hear in the same room with a fiddle. Haven't came close yet on a recording. Let me know if you find it.

Probably fewer bright reflections from a non-ideal room. I'll use that setup when recording in my small room at home.

I have a bunch of ribbons. I like the Royer 121 better than any other on fiddle.

Thank you for the great replies guys; I specifically want it for fiddle and as Dr Bill will attest, whatever Michael Joly did to the cheap Apex 205, he made a great mic . hearing DR Bill's piano recording with it forced me to purchase. Cheers, Ross

I totally understand Ward. I think a big factor for him, was starting a new venture.
IMHO Chad @ Signal Arts, is the "heir apparent", to MJ's legacy. (And-of course has been doing a fine job already) Chris P.S. But I'll still tease Klaus about modding MXL's!

The Stager SR3 would be a great choice. Great sounding ribbon mic. Actually all of his ribbons are cool.

M160 with a NOS RCA ribbon never really disappoints.

M160 with a NOS RCA ribbon never really disappoints. I haven't heard one so I should shut up, but there are so many things wrong with that mod, it purposefully cripples a perfectly fine mic to a degree, and will never remotely sound like an RCA, which has been the chief selling point.
