Im going down the rabbit hole and restructuring my mic locker.
Working on a pair of serrano 87 Getting my riboon mic serviced Kinda sorted for now for sdc mics Got some geffel tones etc.
Im thinking mid level. The luke audio is screaming at me.. looking for any user feedback as well as recommendations for sub 1k tube mics that have a quality tone.

That vanguard audio labs mic always had my interest. Holds up reallly well in the audio test kitchen shootout.

When I demo'd the WA47 I thought it was a really solid mic for that budget.

Vanguard is nice for an "airy" option. That's really the only sub-$1000 tube microphone I'd recommend.

If you're talking the Luke Audio AL-Y56 and Vanguard V13, I had both as vocal mics. AL-Y56 has good flexibility with the three caps (or you can just get the AL-Y59 and pick one cap flavor). The Vanguard is kind of its own thing, and "airy" as has been mentioned. Between the two I'd take the Vanguard...unless airy is not what you want.

What are you looking for in a tube mic. The Warm WA47 is great for its cost. I loved the Advanced Audio CM49. You could also opt to spend a touch more and get something custom from Barbaric.

Stupid question, why does it need to be tube? Honestly I think in that price FET buys you way more mic.

I vote Barbaric all the way. The 3 mics he built me are 3 of my favorites, the price just happens to be affordable. Get Chris the best capsule you can and let him make the rest of the choices. He built me a 37a clone with one capsule (whatever his standard is, the name escapes me) and it was cool, but when I put the real deal Sony in it it became something special. He also cobbled together a cardioid only mini 47 out of spare parts I had based around a Redline Thiersch that is seriously great.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The vanguard is on the list.
I currently dont have a tube mic at the moment so wanting to add a 47ish type thing. Not really looking for emulation just the best tone i can find.
I started aiming at a ut47fet. Then heard a shootout and lost interest. The heiserman is just a tad outside budget.
Not convinced with warm audio gear in general.
I may have a line on a bees neez elly for a very good price. So i guess fet is back on the table.

I thought the CM49 sounded a little cleaner, on Vincent's video. I tend to prefer "vibey Mojo", so would tend towards the "thicker/gooey" WA-47 for myself. Chris

I have sort of a raspy baritone voice. I like the Vanguard V13 because I like the smoothing it does with my voice. I have a Flea 47 with ef12, but I think I like the Vanguard on my voice better. I also have an Upton 251, but that is for other voices. However, my experience with the Vanguard may not be your experience. So, the Vanguard has the nice richness, but it is not a super accurate mic by any means. At least that is my experience.
This reminds me of a time when I read in Mix Magazine many years ago about a particular preamp which I will not name. It was super clean. The reviewer said it was like taking the lid off of an acoustic guitar recording where it was wide open and they could hear everything so well. I thought it was a super review. So I called the engineer who wrote the review. I asked him about the preamp because I was considering buying it. He told me that they ended up not using it on the acoustic guitar in the final tracking. I asked why? He said because it picked up too many noises, from the pick, etc. So they went, in a sense, with a less honest mic preamp, so to speak.
Anyway, I am rambling. Enjoy!

Replace the tube and the Luke Audio mic is pretty great with its various capsule tones... I have all the capsules they offer, plus I’m thinking of adding a few more capsules to the system, including a Flea F9 that just arrived.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The vanguard is on the list. FYI that Derek designed the V13 specifically with the tube it comes stock with (which is private labeled). I tried swapping in several NOS thinking there would be an improvement, and there was not. It sounds best with the tube he has selected/sourced, so no need to pursue NOS tubes if you head that direction.

Normally, I always change tubes, but have not done so for the Vanguard. I have also not done so for my Audioscape Optos. It is great when something actually arrives with the best tube in it! Thank you for sharing.

Another vote for the Vanguard V13 from me.
I like them a lot. They get used a ton in my setup. I bought two and am really glad I have 'em both.

If you’re looking for something 47ish in the price range you’re talking about then the Warm WA47 is a good choice. I was lucky enough to have one here for a bit last year. It was fantastic for the price. I even liked it better than my old Peluso 2247SE. If you want something better than that you’d need to triple your budget and look at the Heiserman H47T or the FleA 47. Having used the FleA 47 many times I can tell you the WA47 isn’t in the same league, but neither are any tube microphones in the budget you’re talking about. Maybe find a used BLUE Cactus? They sometimes show up for good prices. I can’t really speak of the Vangaurd. I’ve never used it and from clips I’ve heard it’s really not my thing. I can say it’s not in the 47ish direction. I would take a look at some of the offerings Gefell has that fall around your budget. They used real M7 capsules and should give you more of the richer feel you are looking for.
