You can't buy the LA610-MK2 over here for love nor money. This isn't covid related either, they've been off the market for the last five years at least. I heard it's due to some sort of compound used in the strip, anyway I've got two Shelfords and I need to expand. Looking for more opto flavour (I have a pair of 2A's), don't mind building one out 19" rack / pre-amp combo.. Any suggestions on a 610 style setup in rack form?

Have you posted a WTB on Reverb or GS, they do come up from time to time?

The LA610-MK2 got used once in our studio when I first got involved. Looks good, sounds like wool dipped in mud. (I suspect the ‘compound’ probably is mud) Compressor is grabby and ‘flubbery’. Is “flubbery” even a word? It is now!

Is “flubbery” even a word? It is now! Sounds like that 610 wasn’t working properly. I have a LA610 Signature (mk i), it sounds amazing and the compressor is smooth. Exactly what you’d expect from a LA2A. But, I’ll say this. My unit came factory with NOS telefunken tubes. And in all fairness I know quite a few people who don’t like LA610’s, and a few that do. Among those that do like them, I it seems to always be with units that also have NOS tubes. So maybe this particular unit really benefits (more than usual) from high quality tubes

I see used LA610 mk2s for sale all the time over here in the EU.
I agree the preamp with NOS tubes sounds better but it really has a sound to it, and only you can know whether you like it or not. I love it on bass cab and some vocals.
The compressor doesn't sound like an LA2A.

I've actually owned a 6176 and it wasn't wooly or muddy in the slightest, unfortunately I bought one second hand and it broke like 8 months later. Someone bought it as spares / repairs and is thoroughly enjoying it. I do tend to avoid second hand nowadays, too many issues.. I won't deny it I am tempted it's just the 1176 portion, it really needs a good opto behind it which just bumps up the price to Shelford or API The strip levels which makes me just think why bother when I can just get a throw budget to the wind top of the line all in one?
