I'm debating getting one of their 500 series racks and a Prometheus Pultec style EQ. I would be grabbing gear from them as I can afford it, but it would maximize rack space to have at least one 500 series rack. Anyone have experience with their stuff? I'm definitely intrigued by the idea of being able to control their stuff with plugins. I've had the Dione for several years now and love it! Having instant recall with analog gear is game changing. Can't believe all companies haven't done it yet!

Is it just me, or does TD Nova sound better? I think cleaner or more transparent is the best way I can think of to describe it. I just find myself gravitating to it more than any other dynamic eq or dynamic compressor.

Are there any samples/clips/tests of 8 channel SumBus vs 16-32 channels out there that anyone has done? Or at least with the SumBus and without? If you have a song that you don't mind sharing with the group here I'll do this test so everyone can hear for themselves. I have been working with the SumBus for almost 4 years now starting with Jeff's Beta version. I have 16 channels so that'll be plenty to satisfy your question. The SumBus loses 6dB of gain on the output so I am making up that gain with a pair of VP28s with RedDots and 0252 Op Amps. This won't affect the sound of the summing but just FYI. The non linearities between channels on the SumBus, just like any other consoles are what give it the "console" sound. Also, there are lots of different configurations of transformer and op amps that make a pretty big difference so that is something to keep in mind. My A bus is my drum and bass bus with the Litz 2520 transformers and 0252 op amps and my B Bus is the High Nickel transformer with the Scott Leiber 1731. I will say from the outset though that the program material can have a lot to do with the difference you're able to perceive. Sometimes it's just a more extende bottom end with more sonic space and sometimes it's just that everything sounds better. Message me for for specific stems and email.

Stealth for me too. You turned me on to it a couple years ago and it’s been my go to ever since. Every now and the Limitless will beat it on a pop track but it works every time for country tracks. What are people using these days? I've been using Ozone 9 Limiter...but I still like what Stealth does with the Harmonic thing. Didn't know if there was something newfangled out there I hadn't heard of...speaking of which...anyone use Elevate?

I’m about to build two bt50 and two fc526 I’ve built several of the gar1731 and 2520 in the past. It’s very tedious work to me. Am also thinking about diyre red 25. You’ll have a much easier time building the 0252. The likelihood of solder bridges is much less IMO.

Has anyone compared the sonics of the CAPI SumBus ACA to a Burl B32? They don’t even compare in my opinion. I love Burl gear but the SumBus is exactly what you hope summing will get you to and that is a console sound. Open up the lid on both units and it becomes abundantly clear why too. ALL inputs of the SumBus have a CA2622 input transformer and a Discrete Op. I have people come to me to master their projects specifically to run it through my SumBus, VP28s, and Burl B2 converter.

This posting from Pure mix seemed to come up in a way that fits right in here. From F. Reid Shippen's mixing video, he shows his "air" trick using an EQ and Limiter in iZotope Nectar 2. Nectar 3 is actually set up a little different, so I'm eager to test this out and see some results that just let me know what options are if the mix calls for this sort of thing. Yes! Finally at long last! A piece of GREAT information! Thank you!

So, Jeff - not to put any pressure on you... , but can you tell us a little more about this? Your thoughts behind doing it? The status? Will it be pre-built only? (Not that I could do it any other way)...Will the console have transexuals...er, tranny's uilt in that act like the 528's? Am I giving you anxiety? What a junky piece of crap! That'll never work : )

Yes, this is exactly what I’m talking about. It’s a combination of factors that goes in to get this much air on a voice. One being the voice itself and two being the mic itself. I just wish there was one trick for all voices! Ha! I've always wondered how they achieve the air sound to a vocal. I have tried many times but can't seem to replicate it. Here is an example of what I mean by "air", on this Freya Ridings track Lost without you, virtually every word has the "air" in the studio recording which is here however when it comes to a live performance here you can hear that while her voice has the same sound/tone the "air" is not on every word or as pronounced. The air seems to be on certain works like first and last words of the line. If there is any quides online that show going from one to the other would be interested to see them!

What’s your favorite trick or plugin for adding air to a vocal? I never have found the magical trick that works everytime. I’ve got a Dolby unit, Maag Eq, Slate Revival, and lots of other plugs but just haven’t nailed it yet.

Klanghelm MJUCjr - somehow just putting it on a track just sort of chills out the digital sound UAD API 560 - Love the midrange on Bass.

Anyone using this ? Just demoing it’s: the smart AI function is interesting and of course, you can tweak its profiles to taste and save alternative. Seems well thought out: sounds clean and smooth. You mean the Sonible?

$6999!!! If they sell 10 of those I’ll be surprised. That’s freakin nuts! For the price of entry, it would be hard to convince me to go for this over a Satellite. I imagine the processing sounds great, but does it MURDER uad at 6x the price? I bet you could buy a dang space Satellite for $7k! Haha!

Yes. Def looks sweet. But sad to think the industry has sunk so low as they will end up selling most to schools, etc.. I can't see a bunch of folks lining up to plunk down $50k+ for their studio console. Yeah, I was thinking it would good for recording schools too. Would be cool for tracking though too. Even at this low of a price I couldn’t really see me plopping down $50k to mix through it though unless I just had money to burn. It’s always the recall issue that keeps me from committing to breaking it out on a desk anymore. I’d try it once though through this bad boy : )

Shouldn't this thread be in DIY? Carry on. Good discussion. Well you can buy em pre-built so that’s an option.

I guess I'm just saying that doing it by hand seems to result in much better results... Stop being lazy John😂!! Computers can’t replace us....yet. I just had to do that exact same process except for it was esses and T’s. It really made all the difference. I was able to add all the air to the vocal that I wanted to without the fear of it being a spitty mess. Dare to be old school!

I've got 11 capi pres (4 28s, 4 26s and 3 312s). wanting to start in on a group of the AML 1081 or 1073. Anyone loving the newish 500 AML ez preamps? I have the AML ez1073 in 500 series and it is KILLER! It routinely beats out real Neve 1073s especially when I’m looking for beefier bottom end. It will be a great compliment to your CAPI pres.

I use the Bax EQ on M/S mode on my Master all the time in varying amounts. Just gives everything a bit more breathing room.

This has been one of my questions. I've been just sending my Drum bus to a stereo channel of the SB...I haven't bothered with it any other way because I only have 8 channels of SB. I guess I could re-print each drum piece through the SB and then mix in the DAW to the Drumbus...then send that to two channels of SB...PITA though. lol But lets say I eventually have enough channels to do everything real time. I assume it would go something like this - K to SB channel 1, Snare Top and bottom etc to SB channel 2 and so on. OH and ROOM to stereo SB channels. But how would I then have a Drumbus? I mean, I guess I could do it in parallel sending it to both the separate SB channel and the the Drum Bus in the DAW...Am I making sense? That has been my end game scenario too once I can add at least 8 more channels. Send all my drums to 8 channels assigned to the B bus then through my Dione and then back in with the rest of the band on the A bus with that cable I was talking about. I think Jeff does have something he's cooking up to sum the A & B bus in the future but for now the little diy cable works fine.
