This is a cool concept. I wish i could find more info on how the analog processing takes places exactly. But near as I can tell its just micro controllers.
Still cool unit. Price is way high though.

There is a demo in the Produce Like a Pro Youtube channel where its explained a bit.
I also thought .... cool concept but was taken aback at the price ... its all top level components though ... so ....

$6999!!! If they sell 10 of those I’ll be surprised. That’s freakin nuts!

Here in Canada that would be like 10 grand, if I was spending that, why would I buy this ?

if I was spending that, why would I buy this ? Instant recall. That's the only reason.

$6999!!! If they sell 10 of those I’ll be surprised. That’s freakin nuts! For the price of entry, it would be hard to convince me to go for this over a Satellite. I imagine the processing sounds great, but does it MURDER uad at 6x the price?

True, but until you did a head to head comparison hard to know which you prefer or if you do ?

True, but until you did a head to head comparison hard to know which you prefer or if you do ? Definitely. I'm still curious how they are loading a unit with 16ch of the same analog circuits and making them different depending on which plugin you use. Demos sound great though. Bob Katz at AES was very excited and spoke highly of it.

From what I can understand about it, $7k is an INCREDIBLY low price. $437 per channel for analog processing of your choice, 100% recallable, 100% analog and automate-able, and from what I can discern, 16 channels of DA/AD in the box as well.
If you think that is too expensive, I don't know what to say. How it sounds...well, that's another story, but the processing is powerful and cheap. They probably would have had more success making it an 8 channel box at 1/2 the price....

Be also cool to see what different options for tools they come up to work with the box.

Its not clear to me if you can have a compressor and eq plus maybe some saturation on each of the 16 channels at the same time. I am sure they are working hard on figuring out ways to squeeze more out of it and its great that a firmware upgrade will bring that to the hw box you have. My concern about the price is that its a lot in one go ... I think most of us are deal hunters who collect hw items over time. I am also not sure yet about the sound ... we all like our hw to be originals or clones which comes from a certain set of components wired a certain way ... this box has-presumably-the same components on every channell ... so a lot will depend on the sound. That said ... I love the innovation ... a great first step!

So you can have 16 iterations of whatever. Which is really only compressors right now. They have no plans of doing any eq.

My questions & thoughts on this product & APB16 after watching several videos.
1.) Provide APB vs non APB level matched audio.
2.) Show off the analog circuits. If there is 6 analog modules ( controlled by APB plugins ) does that mean each channel has 6 analog circuits ( if 6 per ch this should be highlighted as a big selling point. )
3.) elaborate on the type of analog circuits used & what comps the APB models.
4.) commitment to more models ( would this need more analog circuits to properly emulate ? )
5.) Price point, $7000, very high until you show the customer the value.
6.) Explain the conversion process. Eq is digital but comps are analog on the APB16. If I eq then comp, that’s 1 D to A to APB, a 2nd A to D for Eq, a 3rd D to A from Eq to Comp, then a 4th A to D from comp going back into DAW. 4 round trips is a lot per ch esp times 8 or 16.
7.) 32 bit converters - which chips, why is this not a talking point? Who else makes 32 bit converters?
8.) What analog emulations can the APB do?
9.) How many analog effects per ch? 1 or 2?
10.) What type of analog circuits / components are used in the APB16?
11.) Does it have transformers or tubes? Pop the top lol
12.) ohhhh.. No tubes ... hmmmm... how there is a analog “ tube limiter “ w/ no tubes?
13.) So if I use the APB plug to choose my analog circuit, then tweak to my liking why would I need the moo mixer plugin?
14.) There is 4 comps & 2 limiters circuits available, any more APB analog models being developed?
15.) 3 saturators per channel? What kind/ type & what are they modeled on?
16.) Is the Digital peak limiter on the APB16 always active when going back into the DAW or only when you engage it to prevent overdriving the DAW converter?

But here is a terrible photo of the insides. www.resolutionmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/McDSP_APB-16_Resolution-V18.4.pdfKeep in mind this is a modeling unit. It's about having the sound of the units you want. Not literally doing it so naturally there are no tubes. Also I saw its AKM 32bit converters naturally. It's not peakable because it's using 32 bit converters. It's it's own converters so you can't overdrive them. Looks like a MU and EQ are coming out this spring. Full list of units it comes with here: www.mcdsp.com/apb/

Are the sidechains digital or analog? Because the digital dynamic misbehavior is all from aliased digital side chains and control signals bouncing around. Will this be 8 digitally controlled distressors in a rack or 8 FMR RNCs that are switchable to RNLA with a plug? Distressor is analog sidechain with digital switches. FMR is full digital sidechain.

Good question. No clue though. I'd be inclined to guess digital though.

IF the APB box is performing only saturation, AND saturation emulations are getting better, THEN maybe the shelf-life of the APB is limited?

IF the APB box is performing only saturation, AND saturation emulations are getting better, THEN maybe the shelf-life of the APB is limited? I mean it's doing compression too. They just launched their first EQ as well. So doubt that. I mean...i guess all tech has a shelf life to some point.

On the pictures i found of the insides, it seems to have a that 2181 or similar VCA for the compression, and the compressor sidechain is digital. This combined with some saturation is a nice approach to get a lot of different compressors characteristics (see for example the RNC or RNLA compressor for something with the same principle without saturation). How they made the equalizer is a mystery to me though. And i found this: patents.google.com/patent/US10241745B1/en?inventor=Colin+McDowell

That's interesting!
Also, Blackdawg -- I didn't realize the actual processing was happening in the APB. That's good to know...and I'm very curious about that EQ now as well.
