I just received a text from a band leader of a band I'm mixing with some revisions requests. All of them were suggestions to lower of rise elements of the mix by "a hair". I asked the person to drop by to supervise what his interpretation-in decibels- of what "a hair" sounded like. I remember reading an interview from a famous mix engineer- can't remember who- who said he didn't do any revisions that were 1 db or lower changes either up or down. So, I was wondering if people had any "revision rules" that they stand by. Thanks for anybody's thoughts/experiences! .2 usually does the trick for my folks.

I love the B2 Bomber ADC. I’ve only been able to compare it to the Avid HD I/O converters and the Apogee Rosetta but the biggest difference for me is that the Burl just sounded wider and had more depth than those two. I’ve never wanted for anything else on that side of things. I’m researching D/A now.

Say it isn't so! I really would like to stop buying limiters! First FabFilter, then Sonnox, then DMG, then Ozone. Now Weiss? Where will the madness stop? I feel like I need a limiter intervention! I know...I'm skipping the MM-1 after doing a bunch of comparisons. When I turned up the transient emphasis on the Ozone Maximizer, it was a lot closer to the Weiss. Wasn't smashing quite as much...still I think Stealth is the most natural sounding. I'm with you John. I've been using DMG Limitless and it sounds nice and open but some of it has to do with the fact that it's seems a little hyped up top. These Weiss plugs sound nice and smooth but start distorting pretty quick. So...I'm playing with a demo of Stealth right now and I'm really digging it!! I use Ozone 8 also for all the cool things it does but that limiter distorts too. Stealth just sounds nice and clean with a little bump which never hurts : ) I'm gonna buy it.

Here's a quick little demo of one of my presets in a track. All processing and balancing of the drums are being done inside SD3 with stock sounds. I do have Ozone 7 on the track just so you can hear what it'll sound like when it's mastered. soundcloud.com/user-841879432/sd3-drum-demo-countrySounds good, Bart. If anything I wouldn't mind hearing a little more space on that snare. Other than that it's mint. Thanks man! Yeah I think it's a good starting point for country stuff for sure. And yes, a little spank on the snare a little more of the close room would help that snare out. I might would even layer one that has a little ring to it.

looking to get away from the Sigma 2.5 or so years ago. . . . .[the] box with the 2622 input channels was hands down the unanimous choice Did it beat the Sigma? The only thing I might really miss is MIDI control of channel level; I've recently added it to my mix template and it's very cool. Level control is what the DAWtomation is for 👍🏻

For a lot of demos, I don’t run through the vp28s because it’s just another step, real-time bounce that takes time if I need to make small changes (and I’m not getting paid enough lol)...but I just finished the first mix of a song on an EP I’m doing...so I hooked ‘em up and made a bounce with and without...and man, they really do add a heft, punch, glue and detail that you don’t get without going through that last step. I can’t wait to see how the summing mixer will compare...of course this will be over multiple channels compared to just the 2-Bus, so it should be even more goodness. So jsteiger - does the amount of saturation just depend on how hard you’re going in? I guess you could have a rack of VP28s or Heiders going IN to the summing mixer too, huh? I guess I would have a couple of questions along those same lines for Jeff. I'm guessing that this unit does NOT use passive summing with makeup gain? There looks to be active electronics on every input card and then active tranny electronics on the four output busses (L+R A and L+R B). If all of that is correct, what might the resulting difference in sound be between the CAPI summing mixer and doing something like running 16 DA output channels through 16 individual VP26s/VP28s into a passive summing mixer and then using a pair of VP28s for makeup gain? I realize that it will obviously sound "different". I'm just curious how much "different" it will sound and how different the circuit flow might essentially be? If you have 16 VP28’s then I say give it a try. Otherwise, the SumBus will be extremely more cost efficient. There is nothing like this on the market and I can tell you firsthand it blows away eveything I’ve tried. (Inward Connections Mix 690, Burl Vancouver, all versions of Dangerous).

Jeff, Will you be selling sectional pieces as well e.g. just the outputs, or just the summing, or just an input, or an 8 input channel section, 16, etc...? Of course this looks awesome and you should pat your back with beer. From the discussions I’ve had with him the smallest version of the summing mixer will be an 8x2.

Introducing: the Avantone AV10MHF and AV10MLF NS10 replacement drivers Since Yamaha discontinued the iconic NS10M, the supply of aftermarket components has become more and more expensive and less and less available. Avantone Pro has done an exact reverse engineering of the original drivers. Using our global resources and decade of experience in driver construction, we have reproduced the components faithfully, updating the materials to comply with RoHS requirements. The Low Frequency driver, AV10MLF, is a near exact match from 20Hz to the crossover frequency. We have changed the cone design from a lapped seam to a single continuous press formed cone from the same supplier as the original. This allows a much higher level of quality control and consistency during the manufacturing process. The AV10MHF is a match throughout the frequency range, engineered with the same voicing as the original. Both replacement drivers are physically and dimensionally exactly the same as the originals and are a “bolt in” hassle free install that require no changes to the cabinet in the installation process. These will begin shipping at the end of Q1. Pricing AV10MHF: $119 MAP AV10MLF: $149 MAP I’ll take two of each right now. Just let me know where to send the money.

Try turning off all the special features in the tv. Basically turn off all processing. That should help a bit. Yes, that did help. I also switched to the 60hz input and put it gaming mode. Its not perfect bu it’s definitely a lot better.

I got a TV to use as a second monitor and it looks great but there is some serious latency going on with the keyboard and mouse (Kensington with latest driver). Is there some trick to making it work? I'm using a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter to get the video to the TV (fyi). Also, each time I reboot the computer I have to go back in and turn on mirroring and that's seriously annoying also.

Well, I'm not totally sure my interest level is piqued enough. I'm pretty happy with the Stealth...and if I spend an extra $100, it's probably headed towards Tverb right now... Somebody guinea pig it. You gotta try this thing! I’ve been using DMG Limiteless for the past year and have had good luck with it but always wished it were smoother in the top end. The G2 is smoother and is better at retaining transients (snare) than any other limiter I’ve tried. Gonna keep playing with it but my initial response is that it might be my newest addition. Its $49 for a year subscription so I figure if I like it in a year I’ll buy it.

Love that EQ. Its first in my 2-buss chain. I do a little HP and LP( if needed) and add a little MS width. The MS thing was a game changer for me as far getting my mixes to have the width and depth that I was wanting. I too started out with the Fab presets.

My presets were - if I can remember - Mac--Users--library--application support--toontrack or maybe superior drummer 3 then presets? I'll double check. I think they ARE text docs though... Found the presets I’ve been saving in my documents folder and they’re all .tfx files (whatever that stands for, Toontracks maybe). Anyway, I dropped your files in there and tried to load them to no avail. Any ideas? I hope we can build a really cool list of RGO presets in here so I want to figure this out! I’m still playing around with mine just a touch but will upload my “go to” kit thus far tomorrow.

Here are three of my own tinkeration... I feel like a dufus here but how do I open/import these? They are showing up as text edit documents. Also while you're educating me, where does SD3 put the kit presets so I can upload mine? Thanks!

I only got to play with it for about 10 minutes but it definitely did the thing to vocals that the Distressor does! It also did a really cool thing to the 2-bus. Everybody was moaning since last year, but good things need time. I will try tomorow have other things to do right now. I never worked with the HW. Do you have any introducing words about the way the Distressor works? Whats your favourte apllication for it? Cheers Holmes If I were forced to pick only one compressor to work with it would be the Distressor. It's just such a Swiss Army knife. From subtle to obviously Nuke. The main thing I love about the Distressor is the mid range detector circuit. It just smooths out a vocal like no other compressor does IMO. Adding a little distortion to the circuit is especially cool at mix down. I think most folks will be happy with it.

I've heard it's not quite straight forward to get great results with DMG, but once you understand the product it's one of the best limiters. I just discovered the DMG Limitless and it's a must-have for me. At sort-of sensible settings (threshold <-7.0 or so), it doesn't distort. At all. It is more likely to obviously distort with ISP engaged but you just back off a bit. Transparent mode rules - it controls peaks (snare hits, usually) but doesn't kill the tonality of them. I'll be buying it before the demo period runs out for sure. It's replacing Fabfilter Pro-L. Of course, YMMV, but there's a 30-day trial period. Try it, you might like it. +1 for DMG Limitless. I was using Slate FG-X and got so tired of it distorting all the time. Mixed one song through Limitless and have never wanted for anything else. No distortion!

Yes...you can play it with any pad controller or keyboard. Also, if you have a friend with an ekit you can just have them play it and send you the midi. I do that with a drummer buddy of mone.

What kind of music are you guys doing where AD2 sounds better than SD3?! I know we're way off into subjective land here but I own both and they are not even remotely in the same universe IMO. I do country, rock, and pop and have yet to find a stock kit in AD2 that I would use on anything that I would call a final production. You'd be way better off buying the Nir Z samples from That Sound and using Battery.
