So he just pushing the input hard to make the preamp sound a little crunchy by itself or it sounds crunchy as its driving the comp/output to produce the crunch? Sounded like it was just driving the preamp ?

So on the Warren hart Video, why would he push the mic pre hard if there is no transformer on the input to saturate? He does this for drums. Wouldnt he be pushing a solid state distortion into the EQ?

Man my 13" HHX hats were the best ever hats I owned and I owned a few. They were the last ones I sold before I gave up the drums. Dont hesitate with these cymbals.

Guysss....I never heard of these before this thread. They looked really interesting so I checked out their website and some sound clips on the internet. Very impressed. Went over to Reverb to see if any were for sale. Nothing really what I would call a steal or anything. Then I found a listing from a local guy who was liquidating his home studio. Low and behold there is a BM9 in there! Asked what he wanted, made a counter offer, and I snagged one of these for quite a nice price. No box or clip, but man does this thing sound great! Very natural and clear. Really comes to life with my little triton fethead attached. Just one of those moments where you're looking for a piece of gear, and you get very lucky to find exactly what you're looking for at a great price! Are we talking about this ribbon mic? Extinct did send a mic clip with these when you bought one. ITs a nice wooden box as well. I have not used my BM9 for some time but I can t bring myself to sell it just yet. Though I did sell the Ukelele in the background. That fad phase of my life is over. Attachments:

Just out of left field - does a reference/calibration mic that you can use on speaker alignment produce a flat response?
Also i have never used a Lewitt but here was some info about this particular model and an eq graph.

I did really like his D684 Vari mu compressor. Mine had no noise issues. I think this was my first Vari-mu compressor, and then I fell in love with this style of compression. The WT-Comp is a really good example of refining this style of compressor so it made the D684 redundant.

Oh I see there is a lot to consider. I do have some Shure and AT XLR barrel attenuators I could try.

SO why does higher voltage not equate to higher gain? And does that mean the impedance changes as well?

Sorry maybe I should say TLM67 - a 67 fet. The Fet 17 was reported as to having a 67 capsule style sound. And with that same analogy I am in no illusion that my BN 67 would or does sound like a U67. So with the Stam SA67 and the Soyuz 017fet supposively sounding like a 67 ish style mic, I thought I was done with 67 style mics until the BN67 came along. I personally don’t think the 017 FET sounds anything like a U67. I can see someone being disappointed if that was what they were looking for. So did you end up getting one? Or at least trying one out?

with the capsule in the 17 fet being the same as tube 17, a well known reviewer had this to say - "Soyuz have based the SU–017 cardioid capsule design on the revered Neumann K67 capsule" So that sort of peaked my initial interest in a 67 capsule style sounding mic. I thought it was worth a tryout.

Well I shall wade into here with some trepidation. I am one of those people that bought a FET17 and did not gel with it and sold it as new. I went through the 67 sound and bought a 1st edition stam 67 when they came out years ago. And the sound did not suit my voice. Years later now I bought the bought the 17 fet with this possibility in mind. I did not find the mic dark in any way as some say. I thought I would try the BU67 as I liked what I heard from that. I find it a little strange that I like the BU67 ver2 over the Fet17 with both being a 67 style sound but not sounding that similar at all. Having owned both of them I sold the 17 fet as I used it the least. So sometimes people sell the Soyuz 017 fet because another better purposed mic replaces it and at a cheaper cost. But I do know that a Soyuz 17 fet and/or tube is not something that will ever be on my radar again. Now the Chandler REDD that could be a different story !!

SO I was thinking of seeing what happens when instead of using it for a 1:1 ratio but seeing what wiring it up as 1:2 wiring does? SO if I was using this on a Neve 3415 line amp preamp which does does about 40 db of gain does that mean I will get 80db of gain using the 1:2 option?

Newbie basic DIY question. I am looking bat getting some older out put transformer - Jensen Reinbach models not the newer Jensen JAckson version. SO these are Jensen JE 123 model.
They have the option of 1:1 or 1:2 outputs.
Quick question does that mean you can double the output volume capabilities if you chose to wire them in a 1:2 version?
ANd if so how much audio sacrifice (and/ or colour) is there to the quality of sound coming out?
Or it doesnt work quite like this?
Thanks.

Wish you were here to hear it...not saying there's no way it couldn't be psychosomatic, but they sound different. Not sure why, but they do. John, I just love these rabbit holes you go down. It reminds me of how much more I have yet to learn and to actually experience "audiologically" . I think I just made up a word. I am not afraid to say, that I have not yet entered the world of word clocking, AD/DA conversion with digital aliasing and such. It makes for wonderful reading and pondering. It also reminds me that yes - there is a separation from myself as small home audio enthusiast to a someone totally committed to pursuit of audio excellence. But there is a happy place for me to sit within the audio circle of the industry. I have and continue to learn a lot from your experiences and know that there will be a lot more to learn when I reached that stage - if ever. But first I still need to wrap my head around the pros and cons of a patch bay in a smaller sertup like mine. PLease be encouraged to keep up this self discovery and posting of results. Cheers

Loved my Daking Mic pre/eq. Also had a Mic one brick style Daking. Early model that had power supply issues. They fixed that up for free. But I do find the Mic pre/eq very special . SO sad they dont make that anymore.

Samar AL95 has a smaller foot print then an AEA440. Not only just in physical size. I do own this and it has been a while since i have used it due to many ribbons I own, but maybe you could get a demo on one of those to see if that works and place the null of Fig 8 in a most suitable place.

Collate and release my own audio journey picture book. Make better headway/progress towards defining the scope of my goals in making my first commercial microphone. Much more work and $$$ needed there.
