+1 for the Upton +1 for the OPR +1 for the Bock +1 for the BSA +1 for the Stam +1 for the ADK +1 for the Dany Poptop one +1 for SAE model. Look they all had advantages and mild drawbacks. Just buy whatever your budget affords and just get on with it. Whats the point of having the best mics and the worst singers. Maybe I need coffee as I am not feeling it so much today !

Yeah I struggle a bit with this impedance stuff. AEA TRP 100,000ohm input impedance. I thought the mic has to see 10x its own 30-200ohm when going into a preamp meaning most preamps are 300ohm to 1200/1500/2000 ohms. Doesnt this 10x matching of impedance give the best "Full" sound/signal of the mic ? The more higher the Preamp impedance the less low end and more high end the final signal will be - was my understanding.
Are you AEA people just saying that "you are loving the extended high end clarity" that you are hearing? Is that what I take away from this or I am I too much of a novice in the audio world to really understand what is going on? (Which could be quite possible). Please enlighten this "Grasshopper".

Serrano Audio Vintage 84 would also be an interesting choice. at $450 you get a few different capsules and using a SDC for vocals can also produce some quite pleasant results.

I have the FLEX orbital polisher I use on my car. You'll want to use potentially a cutting compound, then a finishing compound and then a wax. Adam's Polishes has several smaller polishers that would let you get in all the areas. You can check with them if your finish is safe with their products, but if it's a poly finish, yes. Not sure on nitro. Just to add to this, get a polishing pad made to use with a drill and mount the pad to a drill press so you can use both hands. Be careful and go slow, use low grit abrasives. Okay i bought a pad pack to go on the end of my drill. Do you have to wet the area before your start or do you wet the pad and then apply cutting compund on the pad?

Yes you are correct it is the sound of the G&L pickups that create there uniqueness. I got a custom L2500 bass made in the factory and I liked the fele of th ebass but the pickus in that were just to raw sounding. I thought there early S500's strats were closer to the fender sound . The feel of the guitars was very nice. The Asat Classic with Leo Fender singnature above the scrwtchplate did not sound so telecaster-ish. Plus there were a few others. Sometimes you just get used to a sound in your head and its hard to change that.

Hey there. I like to get scratches and stuff off my guitars . I am getting too old to do this manually.
There must be a better way!
What is tool equipment do I need to bring the gloss finish back on my electric and acoustics.
Dumb it down for me as I am hopeless as a DIY handyman !!
The manual process is killing my arms and I dont know how effective it is?
Any suggestions on technique, Equipment, and actual products cutting compounds etc would be appreciated.
Please feel free to show before and after photos.
Thanks guys.

Making music together is fun but making friendships is divine. I love the support and laughs and honesty that great friendships can foster. Looks like you had that in spades with Mark. Thanks for sharing this story on the importance of connections, shared experiences and great lasting memories. Truly inspiring.

G&L's are nice enough to play but they just dont sound quite right for me and I have had a few of there basses and guitars. People over here dont seem to gel with G&L for some reason. IF you buy one you can get stuck with it for a while. Anything with a reputable brand name like Nash, MJT, Suhr, PRS etc will always get a reasonable resale if you buy it and dont like it. So I like to stick with those and at the moment Suhr has peaked my interest.

Finally got my USA Lakland 5594 DLX bass guitar. Oh that neck is to die for when playing it. I feel embarrassed I that my bass chops are no where near the quality of the instrument. What a beauty, 1.5 by BEANAT19, on Flickr 1.4 by BEANAT19, on Flickr

You know how it goes, you see a nicer guitar and you think I wonder what that would be like to own.
Which has led me to the Suhr brand.
IS it just an overpriced USA Fender Strat? Or is there really something that is behind describing that is left in your hands after playing one?
I mean I do understand the value and craftsmanship of my older USA PRS. ITs just a delight to play and sounds extremely nice.
And I have just finally got myslef a Lakland 5594 Bass which is a dream to play but my gosh what a price tag over the KOrean/Indo 5502 models.
I really do like the Fender Strat, but what about the Suhr's do p[eople really like? OR maybe there are no Suhr users here and I have the wrong crowd....

Hey Mark. Another happy OPR customer with 2 of his mics I bought last year. Mark has been making his capsules for years and I have had him do a mic of mine like 10 x years ago and its still going strong. Marks capsules are pretty decent that one of the boutique mic makers in USA actually use a variety of his capsules as an option to other well named brands. When I found that out I personally emailed them and they then confirmed this and they gave me some honest feedback on the capsules. I was pretty impressed.

Different.the Tridents were more aggressive, brighter overall. the ST smoother more musical. Layout overall and eq make more sense to me.the trident build quality was erratic sorta flimsy.hated using the dumb unreliable flaky Trident eq faders and they're unobtainium now anyways. much prefer ST and so glad Danny brought them back
Thanks so much Hunter! That's really interesting to hear, that the Tridents are brighter since the ST's are the brightest pre's in my stable.. Or at least the most extended up top I should say. Stays warm up top though. Like everything has a halo up there..
I had one of those Purple Trident MTA A Range 2 x channel strips for a short time before I sent back due to it being faulty. I total understand Roundbages opinion of the black EQ faders, although the problem with this unit was not related to that. But I totally feel in love with the sound of the unit. Those EQ's are broad and the preamp's have there own sound going on. The other Trident units S80, 4T, 80B, ATC2 and the others do not sound similar to the purple unit. If this Sound Techniques unit has the same mojo as the Purple Trident A Range, then it is seriously worth considering. I still have my eye out for another Priple Trident Strip so somewhere down the road there will be another one in my collection of seemingly rarely used equipment at my place.

I had a Poctop 251 it was an earlier model and bit too raw DIY 'ish. I wanted to be in love with the capacitor, valve, capsule combo and being a modified chinese power supply unit looked a little nasty. But that was 10 x years ago.
AMI Xformers sound different to Haufe ones. AMI's are beefier in size and add a bit more to the low end, Well thats what I felt from using them. No idea about Mobys' stuff. The OPR top end is a little extended past the Upton. I would have to get a decent singer in to demo all 3 and see what they sound like. That is not going to happen anytime soon. I dont have any files available to post.

Wow you had a BSA251 with a Josephson, that must have been smooth. The NLP USA sounds amazing.
Reply from HA_DA_JA
I got the BSA 251 straight after selling my Bocks. So at that time the BSA surprisingly sounded natural after using the Bocks. There was nothing exaggerated in lows or highs like the Bocks. But I can see why people love that modern sound.
I think i got so used to the Bocks sound that the BSA sounded a little boring. Althouigh at that stage I was not sure what I was lookling for in the 251 sound.
The BSA also had the small hauffe T14 transformer. looked too small in comparison to the massive Bock ones. But it does the job of not over imparting anything un natural - so to speak.
IT was then I decided what I really was looking for was a more Vintage 251 sound and thats when the opportunity for a new Upton made by Dallas for quite a decent price sprung up. I did not mind the waiting time for this to be made by him. IT was well worth it in my eyes. And then I discovered - yes the vintage sound of a 251 was what I was really after all this time.
This was over a 8-10 x year journey .
The OPR is a blend of vintage and modern tone. I would just say its Marks version of his experiences repairing many 251's over the years and his interpretation of what he would like in a 251. And to my ears I quite liked it so much that I bought the Tube and the FET version.
I truly think as buyers of gear we have a unique opportunity to really support and encourage master craftsman in the fields and supporting people like Mark OPR with such a qulaity product as his well priced 251 was a no brainer.

I don’t read every thread… Yep I agree you dont get the chance to keep up with threads you are interested in. It does take some time to catch up with certain ones. The good thing about RGO compared to other places is that the catch up comments - most of them are definitely worth reading. I had a Josephson Capsule in my BSA 251. I did not find it bright in amy way so that other NLP european 251 capsule that is dark must be pretty noticeably dark. And although I think I need to maybe get one of these, I have to remind myself that after selling the Bocks, getting an Upton and 2 x OPR 251's I need to be satisifed with what I have and just get on with it. The 6072 woud be the one to get.

Just a side thought are the "audio Schools" still pumping out interested audio enthusiasts? OR has that sort of died off? I think things will get a little scary when we no longer have people interested in being in this music market. Or will it start to make it profitable - doable - again?

See this is what I like RGO, I have made some really good connections with some people here. And now if I ever need to know something we can have a chat by just sending messages or organising a hook up. So easy so good so real. That my friends is called establishing long lasting relationships. That reminds me, it must be that time again to make a donation in order to support John and this platform that helps me make these valuable connections.

So did anyone actually pull the trigger and buy one of these? I tested one against an IAA and Shelford (before I sold it). Firstly I tested matt@IAA 's 500 series preamp vs the Shelford, in short it was a tossup. Let me just say they don't sound a million miles aways from each other, the IAA is a bit more natural or "vintage" sounding whereas the Shelford is somewhat more on the clean & detailed side. They're both inductor EQ's and I prefer the Shelford here however the VCA on the IAA is far better than the bridge diode on the Shelford. Then you look at the price, $3K difference for something that really is just different I guess? Now let's circle back to the Newton, yes I still preferred the VCA to the bridge diode of the Shelford however that's essentially where it ended. It's not that the Newton is a bad sounding channel, I don't think anything RND makes is anything less than excellent. However I came to the conclusion that the Newton is just too expensive for what it is, I'd rather have a rack of IAA's. Which preamps did you test out of Matts?
