"When you've got amazing sounding tracks to mix the mixing method is probably going to be less critical"

GO for it~! I've been doing exactly what you described, but only using different modules. For me it's a NO brainer, and I've spent countless hours trying to top my setup by "In The Box" but no can do. Well, at least I Can't Top it? Mixing thru my rig ALWAYS SOUNDS BETTER~! GO figure.. In my case I'm using 14 x Helios type 69's for the most important audio. The API 8200A is used for Reverb returns, and parallel stuff that is wired into the Neve 8816 buss inputs. And of course all the Helios module outputs are summed in the Neve. There are TT patch bays behind the top panel towards the rear of the units, so changing patching is simple. BUT, I DON'T TOUCH THEM, which like in your case, makes (setup / recall) simple. Simplicity, and wonderful sound all in one box. Funny enough, I specified, and built these for tracking bands outside of the studio proper, but they worked so good for mixing, that's what I been using for the last few years. And it's very simple for me to take a quick snapshot (actual photo) of my rig, and return everything to where it was for that particular song in about 5 minutes. No big deal, as the computer handles most of it, plus the NEVE has snapshot recall of all buttons and switches~! Attachments:![](//storage.proboards.com/5388330/thumbnailer/TmMHYuahKSKCYvLlJuxX.png)

I do something like this, when I feel it might help the artist / song / performance or whatever. In this one particular case, I had a band in my place that was really new, they hadn't recorded anything together before this, and they sounded great, really raw in the studio. So I asked them if they would be open to using a limited number of tracks to cut their songs??? Why? Well this was a personal thing for me, because a long time ago I received the master tapes from The Rolling Stones sessions at Muscle Shoals. (don't ask!) 1 inch 8 track. I was so moved after listening to how great, Brown Sugar, & Wild Horses, were captured on the 1 inch 8 track machine, I needed to see if I could also capture that raw emotion, and energy, on a limited number of channels, as they did. For The Stones Muscle Shoals session, Brown Sugar tracks were laid out like this: 1 - Drums (mono) 3 mics summed to one track 2 - Bass mic on amp with bleed 3 - Percussion: castanets, cowbell, moraccas, all on this track! 4 - Electric Guitar Keith (1 mic with bleed) 5 - Electric Guitar Mick (1 mic with bleed) 6 - Piano (1 mic with bleed) 7 - Vocal, this was overdubbed, and has Mick & Keith both on 1 mic witKeith about 1 foot behind Mick. 8 - Was NOT USED. Anything else for that tune was over dubbed later at Sunset sound. I was told they bounced the 8 track up to 2 inch 16, and went fro there. But the vibe of those tracks were unbelievable! So what I did was to limit them to just 8 tracks of my IZ Radar IV recorder. Drums 4 x mics plus a room, summed just to stereo. Bass was DI for safety, (later erased) but the SVT was mic'd up. Guitar was a vintage Fender combo, with Royer SF-12 Percussion, was ROYER SF-12 overhead, bussed to drum tracks. Vocal - u67 to one track... I believe that was 5 tracks, and then everything else was recorded as overdubs, on the remaining tracks, and bounced with something else if need be. Mixed to two open tracks 23 & 24 on the Radar. This was such a success for the guys and myself, that I've now done this about 20 times, with all sorts of bands! Don't kid yourself, limitations on certain projects (that can benefit from them) can be a wonderful thing! Here's a song from that session Attachments:2 Red Queen.mp3 (6.14 MB)

So for the second time since the Pandemic started, 2020, I find my self looking again for a space to setup shop, and to live!
Was just informed that the property I'm now in, will be put up for sale shortly simply due to the increase in property values due to the pandemic. GO figure.
So that said, Anybody know of any spots available anywhere? Right now I'm literally on the border of CT. and NY. Would like to stay in the area, but open to suggestions, at this point.
Might be open to sharing a space, if we are the same wavelength?
Since I've been doing the one room concept, prefer a large open space for the studio room. And if that space is attached to a decent sized house, all the better.
I'm too damn old for this crap!

Leslie was a force to be reckoned with.
I recorded, toured, and produced, 5 or so albums for him. It was absolutely amazing to realize, no matter what guitar (even acoustic) or amp he played, he always sounded like Leslie. It was a really all in his fingers!
Truly a legend!

"Am I the only one who doesn’t like using more than one mic on an amp?"
No !
I'm the same way, just need one, but make it a good one!

Ahh yes....the gold ole days. I remember the joy of locking up two MCI JH-24 machines, while trying to run the Allison Automation on our MCI 636 (she talks about in the beginning of the Video) A total nightmare. Especially after hours of mixing. Since the data being printed to the tape tracks would go from one to another, each pass, it would always deteriorate (if it was a long session) and being 48 track mixing, it was always a long session, sometime days.... So we would have to come up with ways to fix the printed data as to save everything we did for the last few days...
I must admit, we got very, creative, and somehow, we always got thru it.
But for those of us who lived thru those times.... MY GOD, do we have it easy now. It's almost a joke....compared to when I started.

I would think a good condition M1 would cost around $2 to $4K.. But I know you can get them for closer to 2K.
My console was a bit different, TLA VTC 32. Not a lot of love on any of the forums, simply due to the fact it runs the tubes at a lower voltage, and use them for flavor. Plus it does NOT have any transformers.
BUT THAT SAID... The records I tracked, and mixed on that console sound amazing, period!
As a matter of fact our forum mate, Don R, and BOC, recorded two records with me at my place on that console. And they really do sound wonderful
And I did everything, from Rock, Death Metal, Country, Blues, and Jazz, all major releases...
Plus the fact that you can change the tubes in some channels to have different colors for different things was an extra. MIne has 32 channels, 64 upon mix, with 8 Subgroups! And you can overdrive each section if need be.
Quite a versatile console in my opinion.
Only quirks I had, we a few switches broke, I soldered new ones in.... And the pots become scratchy, which a squirt of Cramolin takes care of nicely.

"Anyone like the SPL Stereo Vitalizer mk 2-T?"
I use the SPL Vitalizer SX-2 (NON TUBE) on just about every mix! Very understated piece.

Also remember, Proper treatment behind the vocalist, facing the microphone, can be as important as what's behind !

Larry DeVivo,
Great guy, good friend. He recently sold is house / Studio in Saratoga, NY, and I believe is going to relocate on Cape Cod. or is trying to find a place as we speak!
As far as I know Dan Goodwin, didn't own the "A" frame house (Isokan) he was in for quite a few years. Not sure he could sell it as a studio... Although he moved to a new location not too long ago.
And Henry Hirsch, did haver a Helios, in the Church in Hudson NY. I went up there a few times... He sold the console, & the Church, retired.
That Helios console was sold to a "Frenchman" who was lived here in NY, who name escapes me at the moment. He later re-opened that studio that Kevin Augunas had for a while, which was Fairfax Records / Studio. Also known as "Sound City" in Van Nuys California
Not sure what happened to that facility or console.

I've got a series two, that recently went back to Danny for a recalibration, and Re-tube. If it was used twice since then, I'd be surprised. But that said, It's such a unique piece, I'm not sure I'd wanna sell it?

I have 4 pairs of quality phones that I use all the time for different reasons. That said, the 2 most used, because of what they each allow me to focus on are...
Grado RS-1 Sennheiser HD 600's
I'm working on a album mix this week, 11 songs..... When I get things to sound correct & balanced on the HD-600's the mix sounds great on the ATC SCM 25A's GO figure?
I have pair of HD 650's still sealed in the box, never opened. Heard they are a bit different, from the 600's, so I'll probably never try them....

And yet..... I wonder how is it possible that we have so many SONICALLY AMAZING / World Class Mixes, over the years without any room correction software.
For me less is always more...
But if it works for everyone else!

Tomorrow, at my Studio's pub, I will host our annual Christmas in July with three Belgian Holiday Beers on Tap! If I'm not mistaken, I Believe this is the 25th year, give or take.
For most people, my guess this isn't a big deal, but for my members, and anyone who enjoys a GREAT ALE, this is the shit.
Gonna pick up the chilled kegs from the distributor at 5 am tomorrow.
#1 - Saint Bernardus Xmas
#2 - Delirium Noel
#3 - Spencer Holiday, and there will be a few more, but I can only tap three at a time.
There's more then a good chance, we will be the only pub on earth serving these wonderful brews this month!
And on top of that, the weather forecast is 88 degrees, and sunny all afternoon, and evening. Haha
So if you don't hear from me, you know why!

I've had one (8816) since it was released.... Use it everyday. Had one problem, which I did have to send it back for repair. But, as long as you have the latest software / firmware, the unit works as it should as does the recall.
For the money, and its size, with the Fader Pack it's really an amazing little unit. Packs a lot of great features in it's small size! And it sounds wonderful, to boot.
