No -- not about economic inflation I thought it might be fun to have a thread dedicated to some of the ridiculous prices people are asking based on their perceived value of an item, both used and new (e.g., Shelford Channel). These kinds of posts show up in various threads across RGO, so now we have a bucket for them. Also, it might help to track gear price trends over time.
p.s.: if a thread like this already exists, I'll delete and add to that instead.

Good news is the dollar is worth even less. And now you get to pay higher prices.

Good news is the dollar is worth even less. And now you get to pay higher prices. All fiat currencies eventually end up at their intrinsic value which equates to exactly zero.

In particular I get a kick out of the guys each week trying to make a profit on AudioScape gear....like we all won't have another opportunity to buy on the next Wednesday and Saturday 🤣

It’s a desperate grudge based mentality.
Crimes of opportunity
Most of the full time flippers I know are pretty unhappy people who don’t have next months rent and have a mission to stick it to the man, feel superior to the rest of us, etc. They’ve usually fucked over most of their friends with a attitude of “it’s just business”, but get really pissed when you won’t give them a deal.

I swear down these thread titles are becoming dodgier, anywho "scalping" is happening across so many industries at the moment. Scalpers buying computer parts and selling them at double their MSRP, second hand cars with a 150 - 250% markup, even manufacturers are getting in on it due to supply / demand. I bought a car 15 months ago and the cost after currency conversion has gone up $13,000.. The best I've seen so far is an $83K Golf R sold by a main dealer.. Impressive levels of scalping there.
I bought my Shelfords in 2018 for around $3650.00 each but they are a bit more expensive here. Now they're $4280.00.. Which is actually not bad in comparison to some other stuff, API prices have gone up a fair bit the 5500 EQ when I first looked at it in 2019 was $2,800.00 and now it's $3477.00. Hmm..
The great news is it's happening all over the world AFAIK.

This thread immediately made me think of a craigslist post I saw a couple days ago. I don’t know if the dude is a straight up liar but I was shocked by his claim that Drawmer gates are going for $800 so I went onto reverb to check and, no way. The $350 he’s saying is a bargain is actually 2x the going rate. What’s weird about this is that anybody that even knows what this product is also knows how over priced his offer is. Why bother? austin.craigslist.org/msg/d/austin-drawmer-ds-201-dual-gate-pair/7437041872.html

Hey, he's letting his go for a "quick sale" at only $350 each because after all they go used for $800. What a guy. Or I could buy this one for $165. reverb.com/item/49617646-drawmer-ds201-2000-s-black

The only thing rare about them is they haven’t been warm in 20 years!

That is insane. If sells, even more so. seawell 's Audio-Scape comment was spot on. I've seen that a lot over the last few years with Stam stuff too though (bird in the hand, overcharge). That said, anyone wants to make me an offer on the AS G Comp I've had in the classifieds, shoot me a PM. I think it's a fair price shipped, but correct me if I'm wrong. Edit: also meant to add that gwlee7 showed some class on pricing his AS gear he sold recently. There's some good things going on here.

A few pieces have been ramping up rather ridiculously for the last three or so years for the stuff I have and/or shop. Effects-wise, AMS stuff is through the roof. Eventide H3000's as well. Even more head-shaking when you factor in the cost of shipping it to someone to refurbish it. "Good condition" for my AMS RMX-16 in reality meant "will last about two weeks before fail." After refurb, holy shit did I take a bath on it. But it sounds fucking amazing, so there's that LOL.

Definitely my experience. There are few gear flippers here in Nashville that are terrible to deal, are ridiculously overpriced, and often sell you broken shit and they aren’t willing to back up their sale. And yes, they are all miserable people.

So in other words as much as I try not to be those of who you speak I agree because I know them.

Old Tascam gear Used powered monitors and amplifiers that need work. Used unfixable powered monitors Used current ATCs and Quested models for barely off new. Used utility mics for barely off new. Used broken or barely working vintage mics Used broken vintage rack mount classic gear that doesn’t work or has major issues Used tube and transistor stuff from the 50s-70s that’s unrestorable without scouring eBay for months. Sometimes 1k for a piece of metal that needs new everything including unobtanium tubes, transistors, or transformers.

Audio Technica at3035s. I've regularly see them for $350-$400 canadian in the last few years. They used to go in the $100 dollar range before that. I usually get caught by forum inflation.lol Something older is affordable and cool, then word gets out on the forums and the prices jump.lol As soom as demand goes up, so do prices.

I've seen some very overpriced old Triad transformers. And old transformers in general, it's a trend.
