So did this one, I think Wendy who did the Smart documentary might have ended up with it. I know the Wi state historical Society ended up with one of the tape Machines, not sure if it was the Studer or the old Otari. So in the case of the Nirvana stuff, it was the contrapositive of "garbage in, garbage out": it was more like "gold in, gold out" regardless of capturing medium. mm Like many I think the Scorpion was a budget decision at the time.

With prices as insane as they are and the fact that recording gear associated with an artist taking on the memorabilia market I’m kicking my self for not grabbing 2 pieces. 1. Butch Vigs / Smarts original TAC Scorpion that the first Nirvana Demos were tracked on. 2. The original Cheap Trick Hill live board, yes it was a total piece of crap strangest EQ ever but in 92 I could have had it for $200. On either of these I could have had them and documentation to prove providence. Would someone be interested in a Korg tape echo I toured the world with in my band's arena days? Could you see it sitting behind glass in a Hard Rock Casino Hotel? I dunno.. I bid on a THD Univalve amp belonging to Stephen St. Croix because I wanted something of his. I lost the auction. Who knows, the thing is you have to have a fan base who has and will spend the money ! I remember watching an episode of American Pickers where they were dealing with Rick Nilsson and thinking I could have easily bought most of this stuff 10-20 years ago for a $100.

Always wanted a tape echo, but either too much $ or too finnicky for a non-tech like me.

Surprisingly that one didn’t shock me. Because it has no power supply thus can't shock you? Sorry, I'll leave the jokes to chessparov

A Korg Stage Echo? I've wanted one for decades. Unfortunately I probably can't afford to make a fair offer now.

The true insanity is guys charging $35 to ship an sm57 in a small usps if it’s box within the lower 48! Or a guy who wanted $40 a piece for some unboxed slimline led par 64’s. I checked from his zip it would have been $43 to ship in a single 12x12x18 box box would have been less than $2 and that was an estimate based on total weight plus 5lbs!

I recently discovered that a major media outlet was already using the name "inflation nation", so I changed the name of this thread...
...solely to avoid copyright infringement

In some ways I’m kind of enjoying this whole idiotic inflation in our little corner of the universe because it’s making me dive deep into the esoteric that nobody knows about! No I’m not going to give examples other than to say for a new mains design I just found 4 12in that if they were on everybody’s radar would be at least $250 ea well I scored 4 for $250!

Totally - another example is turning back to the usual retailers that sell demo and used. From what I've picked up lately, it's been more reasonable than 'verb stuff.

And it makes sense, you have to turn the inventory vs the private seller who is hanging on for a certain price.

You can still get AKG D790's and D770's for around $60 or less used.
Very much sleeper vocal mics. Live and studio. Chris

From my local craigslist:
1975 Moog Minimoog Model D Vintage Analog Synthesizer w/ Pedal - $11000 OBO
Oberheim OB-8 Vintage Analog Synthesizer w MIDI (Restored, Serviced and Upgraded!) - $9000 OBO
Roland Juno-106 Vintage Analog Synthesizer (SERVICED!) - $2700 OBO
1976 Korg PE-2000 K-5 Poly Ensemble S Vintage Analog Synthesizer (Serviced!) - $2700 OBO
Sequential Pro-One Vintage Analog Synthesizer (serviced!) - $2700 OBO
Can you imagine paying $11k for a Minimoog? Or $9k for a Oberheim? Sorry, but for my money there are plenty of great sounding (new) synths that don't have any of the issues that come with vintage electronics. DSI, Sequential Circuits, and even Novation and Arturia are killing it right now. Only trust fund kids would buy this stuff.

Funny thing about these sorts of prices is that a piece of gear is fundamentally worth whatever somebody is willing to pay.
Because at this very moment, somewhere in the world, a laptop cowboy producing NuRetroGlitchStepNRGCore is getting an absurd amount of money for some sample collage. He's been using a [k]'d copy of Waves' Fairchild 670 VST and decides, 'hey, I'm rich, beeeeeyotch' and wants the real thing. Nobody gets in his way because, well, who cares...
20k for a Flickinger EQ is absurd when you could learn to DIY, make some sympathetic friends on GroupDIY, and build your own (I don't know if Flick EQ's have been reverse-engineered, but I'd be surprised if they haven't since it's 'Pultec-style').
Maybe I'm grumpy because it's 4º outside.

Oh, interesting - I followed the bio to see what else they had, this is from the owner/operator of Make Believe. Their past priced things don't seem all that inflated, so this could just be to lure out offers.
