Hi gang! I am a huge CAPI fan and i have two Purple Audio sweet ten racks holding 6 "channelstrips" as i call it to have the feel of a classic console. My idea is to have a "API" 8ch setup with these and giving a 2 slot space on each rack for a set of Purple Lilpeqrs and a BusComp
So atm,
First rack holds: - VP25, Heider, Heider, VP28, VP28 & Heider Second rack: - BT50, BT50, LC25, BT50, BT50, & BT50
I want to win some time during recordings to have these modules hooked together in the back of the racks instead of me always patching them in my bantampatch! And while mixing, its quite nice go into the VP28s to get those other cut-freq that the EQs dont have to get the whole "API" sound with the extra transformers etc. But i do know that the VP25 is the only unit that hasnt linelevel.
Should i just eventually swap the VP25 for another Capi module if i do this way or are there other concerns to think of having a setup like this? Or am i just dreaming that this setup will be beneficial at all? The fact i still have the preamps to push the sound even more (if needed to) seems like a nice thing
/ lazy patchman

Ideally you'd have a 500 rack that does this built in. My TAC500 racks just have a feed switch that allows you to feed the output of a slot to the next adjacent slot. So you'd go Mic pre in slot 1 to EQ in SLot 2 and Compression in Slot 3 all without cables. You'd only have 1 input cable on slot 1 and one output on slot 3.
Which is one of the Purple Ten's downfalls I think. Pretty boring I/O on there rack compared to a lot of other options out there.
As for line/mic level stuff that's the VP28's specialty since it's a mic pre and fader module in one. That's what I'd be using for line level remixing stuff. Or get some ML2's to do that as well.

Sure, but what i want to do is to go Preamp (rack1) into EQ (rack 2) for 6 slots so i have the strips going like a waterfall as it does in a console. Heider and VP28s are fine with line levels and i do use the whole strips while recording with mics.
My preamps are now going in straight to my ADDA (without being hardwired to the EQs) What i want to do is to ALWAYS have them hardwired with preamps into EQs before going into ADDA. But this might not be ideal for mixing purposes since the VP25 doesnt do line levels. So i guess my initial question is, should i just switch out the VP25 for another preamp that does the line level? And if so, is this beneficial to get the whole API sound since it goes through all the transformers and op-amps instead of just going through the EQs
hopes this makes more sense

ah. Yeah i mean just plug the outputs of the top rack straight into the lower one and basically the same thing. For the Line Level part. Yes, it'll be easier to just swap the mic pre's to something that can handle the Line Level. Is it worth it? Only you can decide that! It'll be a lot more transformers than just the EQ's for sure. But that'll be a personal preference. Since you have some VP28's right now, i would do some experimenting to confirm if you think it'll be of large benefit and worth the money and time to swap the VP25s and Heiders. Can always get another rack to hold all of those(plus could then feed those also into the VP28s and EQs if you so wanted.

GO for it~! I've been doing exactly what you described, but only using different modules. For me it's a NO brainer, and I've spent countless hours trying to top my setup by "In The Box" but no can do. Well, at least I Can't Top it? Mixing thru my rig ALWAYS SOUNDS BETTER~! GO figure.. In my case I'm using 14 x Helios type 69's for the most important audio. The API 8200A is used for Reverb returns, and parallel stuff that is wired into the Neve 8816 buss inputs. And of course all the Helios module outputs are summed in the Neve. There are TT patch bays behind the top panel towards the rear of the units, so changing patching is simple. BUT, I DON'T TOUCH THEM, which like in your case, makes (setup / recall) simple. Simplicity, and wonderful sound all in one box. Funny enough, I specified, and built these for tracking bands outside of the studio proper, but they worked so good for mixing, that's what I been using for the last few years. And it's very simple for me to take a quick snapshot (actual photo) of my rig, and return everything to where it was for that particular song in about 5 minutes. No big deal, as the computer handles most of it, plus the NEVE has snapshot recall of all buttons and switches~! Attachments:

I've had the same idea. I've been slowly working on building VP28s and BT50s/FC526s to achieve this. With the type of mixes I get, I'll never have enough channels to really mix this way, but it would be cool to have 8-16 to get basic EQ and compression going on important elements.
