Here's why I love the Kemper. Took me less than 5 minutes last night to start this tune. No muss or fuss. db.tt/8IERfs0H

don't worry about it @johnkenn all good at my end. I wasn't trying to dis kempler. i was interested in cowboys thoughts and was heading down that path. I've still got tube amps gouge. And I still use them from time to time too, but since getting this Kemper, I seldom mic an amp. In fact I've got my AC 3o on loan to my nephew. But I won't loan him my Kemper

Don't think twice about a Kemper Mitch. John is right. We can't mic amps up in a project studio and get them to sound as good. You'll quickly forget it's digital I'm betting.

BTW, on that Urban track, I can hear the UAD Roland Dimension D in use (stereo mode). Urban records at Blackbird and I know Neibank likes using that plugin on vocals. And for good reason. It really creates a picture frame like space around a vocal.

I'll tell you something Swurve, I can get that dry vocal sound here at my place by putting a mic up in a corner filled with bass traps from top to bottom. There's also treatment on the ceiling there and I'll take homemade partition made out of rock wool that I'll throw up behind the vocalist. It's dead as can be BUT!! It takes one helluva singer to pull off that dry sound. There is nothing of interest to the ear except that vocal. So it sticks waayy out in a mix. That Urban track is a good example for sure and his delivery carries the whole song (a well written number by Rodney Crowell BTW).
I'm nowhere near good enough to pull it off and I don't know many who are really. That said it can easily be done in a dead space. I have a friend who owns a studio nearby. He has a completely dead vocal booth, one that when you walk in you almost have to scream to hear yourself. It's very weird. He and I have talked about this before. He never uses it but it will give that dry, upfront vocal too.

I've got an SM7 and live is what I use it for. The only studio application it ever gets is kick and guitar cabs (sometimes). It sounds good here because Ed Sheeran could sing into an iPhone mic and make it sound good. But I've honestly never put it up against a good LDC and thought it was better for any vocal, ever. It lacks detail and is grainy in comparison to LDCs. But it's a dynamic, it's not supposed to sound the same.
As a live vocal mic, it's outstanding though. Rejects off axis voices very well which makes it perfect for what your doing Wiz.

There's a Dumble head and cabinet on eBay right now for the bargain price of 90k. Somebody better jump on that.

Why not try the rtz 500 series legend 1073 clone? Im gassing for that baby I've never used an RTZ but the description/philosophy (inspired by 1073/1272 but as if development continued, improved, etc.) strikes me - at least on paper - as being the same idea as the Aurora, Great River, Avedis, etc. pres - any one ever compare/contrast them? I'd guess the RTZs would be the most open (?) just from seeing the Lundhals as opposed to Carnhills... although the Avedis use Jensen. I imagine the green lettering is easy to read in a dimly lit room - is it as garish (Seattle Seahawks-y) in person as it is in their photos? The sound samples sound great - just curious. The RTZ weights more than any single space 500 unit I've ever touched by a lot. The transformer is huge for the class. That's where it gets it's mojo no doubt. Great design.

Love my RTZ's. Detail detail detail, with just the right amount of monstrosical magic. Yeah, I made that word up.

The guitar god is dead? No wonder since so many haven't learned to play the thing. Everytime I see a music video, the guitar player looks like he's sawing his guitar in half strumming so hard. At least I have my Hendrix and Cream collection. Someone must have forgot to tell Brad Paisely the guitar god is dead. Either that or he didn't listen. Still rocking that Tele last I checked!!

Sonically I can't see how it would any different unless the bounce from the daw does something as opposed to a straight ad capture.
I've been known to use both methods. Try it and see what you think.

Yeah that's several fiddle parts stacked. How did you record it? it sounds DI'd, which to me is kinda harsh and not pretty, compared to everything else in the track. regarding the drums, it sounds canned vs. all of the nice, expensive sounding live instruments you've got on there. I'm afraid you made them sound bad, cuz everything else sounded so good! No Chuck that was stereo recorded. What happened was the sound post in my 1865 German fiddle fell out when I was changing strings one day and I tried to put it back in without the right tool. The post was in the wrong place and made the fiddle sound peculiar. I had it put back in by a luthier after I recorded this. Need to go back and redo some stuff. I just retracked the vocal tonight. I uploaded the new file above.

jeromemason - where are you getting your M7 IR's? I was just looking for Bricasti impulses last night. I was checking out Samplicity. wiz - have you tried any Bricasti IR's in Space Designer? Sorry for the minor derail here but I was just looking into this. True M7 is the best ones I've used True M7 is left and right. How do I load both responses into the IR?

Sounds killer to me. Love the 60's kit in mono. Great for a good sound on quick demoes. Might want to check it out fellas. Used it on this track here.

Just lovely. He's in town next week, but the show was sold out. I was hoping to give him regards from Herbie. I see lot's o"Neumann's there. One looked like it was from 1939. Is the mic he's singing through an original U47? If you see him Martin, be sure to mention that you played at CBGB's. He loves that old school stuff!

$20,000??? Seriously? My studio has over $50,000 in cabling alone. Pro, but not top-end by any stretch of the imagination. 20K will not go far. $500 Large would be a better number to work with. Yep. Got about 100k of mine and the governments money tied up in mine and I'm still on the low end.

I can count on one hand how many albums I've had over the years that I can put on and play from start to finish. This record goes on the list, and not because he's a friend. The record has that "flow", tells a story.
No matter what happens with his career from here forward, Chris will have left something behind that's worthy with this record. That's as much as anyone can hope to do on this life with their work.
