You guys are killing me! I am just about to order one, but the new tube mic has to come first. I have been putting this Burl purchase off every time I have the money to get it. I am not going to be able to hold off much longer if you guys keep it up. I had a Lavry DA10 that I liked. The wide setting was pretty remarkable. It had a very wide sound stage and you could hear placement very well. I wish I still had it, to me it was a little step down when I got my dbox, but I needed more options for my DAW at the time. Sing it Willie...Burl is always on my mind. Burl is always on my mind. They're hard to beat. If you do get one, I can't imagine you not being thrilled with it. They are expensive, 1k a channel but worth it.

Doesn't sound like mine that's for sure. Something is going on with it. How many DB are you pulling there? I'm guessing 20 or more.

It's hard for anyone with a keen ear to accept the "converters don't matter" thing. If they have ever heard a great converter. My guess is that some who write on internet forums about converters haven't. Anyway, I like John believe that other things matter more than the converter used, but I also liken converters to the foundation of a house. When we look at a big fine home, few would take time to notice the foundation. We see the big nice windows and doors, the siding, shingles etc, but pay little attention to whats underneath holding up the whole house. Conversion is like that foundation. If it's the good stuff, it will carry a production all the way to the end handling as much weight as we choose to put on it. Weaker conversion may start to show cracks here and there as we build on top of it.
It's true that the difference is slight sometimes A/Bing converters one track at a time, but start stacking the bricks and that's when you really know what you've got.

I use it once in a while. I do find that my expectations change depending on the song. Say I've mixed something that I think is close and decide to put on a comp. sometimes I'll think to myself before adding it that I'll barely touch it with the compressor. Then end up pulling 2 or 3 in spots because it sounds better. The same can said for the opposite for me, thinking I'll slam something and end up barely touching it or not at all.
All things considered, this is why I find presets useless and for dynamics, even more so. I have been known to stage signals up to match outboard that is set to a sweet spot but that is much different than 2 buss signals because they vary so much.
As always, no right or wrong way to approach a 2 buss IMO. Use what sounds right I guess. I'm all for talking about theses things as points are brought up to learn from, but most if not all on this board are at a very competent level mixing. Not much need to second guess ourselves. If it sounds right, it is right.

Where's my popcorn? I'm glad i decided to go with a symphony 3 years ago and an octo card so I don't have to suffer from GAS like the rest of you guys every time an apollo update comes out lol I don't suffer from GAS Chuck. I've learned that new release stuff is 99.9% hype and .01% improvement (usually). If a person couldn't make a good sounding record with the first one, what's the chances. They can do any better with negligible gains on the second? Here's the upside to all this, first generation Apollos will be popping up everywhere on the used market for pennies on the dollar!! Gotta love progress.

The 8dio 1928 Steinway is currently on sale for $129. I'll be picking this one up on Saturday. Aside from the Ravenscroft, it's the best I've heard. They also make a 1969 Steinway that rules as well. It's a bit brighter sounding to me. Some of the piano VSTs that come stock with Native Komplete are totally usable as well. 8dio.com/instrument/1928-steinway/Rich I've been using the 1969 Steinway from 8 DIO but as usual, Randy's ear catches all the good stuff. That Ravenscroft is stunning. Sounds like something John Tesh would play.

If they get the conversion right, the Apollo will be even more of the industry standard. I sure would like to sell my separate ADDA...but, here we go again...I've got a rig that is working like a charm, I love the results, yet I'm threatening to screw with it. Yeah I jumped off that merry go round. Nothing new entices me anymore since settling in with Burl. If it aint broke, it don't need fixing I say.

I have to keep my console because if I get rid of it that means I will fill my room up with outboard to take the place of my console...lol Honestly I'm going to go pretty minimal there too this time around. I'm thinking hard about an ADK rackmounted PC type build...with a few choice pieces of outboard. But that temptation to just buy a bunch of nice stuff is always there...laughing at me. The capture is so important to me these days. I don't have time to sit and tweak for hours so I try to nail it at the source. So it's mics, amps and converters for me for level of importance. I can work with pretty much any DSP or outboard after that with a good result. What's printed to storage is what he have. No console or outboard or plugin can save a nasty capture IMO.

Yeah I like the ease and thousands of midi loops in SD but I like Slate's sound better. My problem is the mapping is different and I find myself having to go back and reset the mapping manually which is a drag. Can the mapping on SSD4 be set to default to Superior Drummers mapping? Anybody know how to do this?

I've noticed occasionally that it seems like the cap will sound like it "collapses" when you're really belting into it. Just like the plosive overwhelms it. If I'm remembering correctly, I think it sounds similar to one I was listening to that Shannon said "oh, it has condensation on it" or something like that...Does that make any sense? Mine does that too. I think it was in a text I mentioned to you to try turning the cap on a 45 and sing "beside" the mic. This is why. Mariah Carey couldn't belt loud enough to overload a mic in this configuration. It changes the eq a bit but sometimes that's just what we want.

The Studer is great for trashing drums. I feel it's very useful. I also like the 224 John. It's more vibey than some other verbs which is nice. The EMT 140 is vibey too. I'll use either one of these two along with the Relab 480 and get nice results.

I tried to make mine a duel purpose space. It doubles for a nice spot for family movie night. There's a rack of gear out of the picture to the right and the door in the picture opens into the tracking room. Thats really quite beautiful cowboy.. argosy? How does it go having a big screen TV, resolution wise on the mac? cheers Wiz Thanks Wiz. Yeah Argosy. The tv works great. Come out of the HD video port of the Mac mini so it's 1080 just like a regular monitor. Lots of real estate and easier on my failing eyes without the need for reading glasses
