I have never recorded with a SM7 before, and saw this video.
I really like the vocal sound, and the fact that its a singing guitarist, I don't hear any phase issues, so I am assuming there is really good rejection of the guitar in the vocal mic..
Those who own a SM7B is this indicative ?
cheers

Good vocal and guitar sound with proper mic placement. It's also in a large room with good acoustics. Most vocals I hear from project or demo studios have a boxy or phased sound because of the small or boxy environment they are recorded in.

I've got an SM7 and live is what I use it for. The only studio application it ever gets is kick and guitar cabs (sometimes). It sounds good here because Ed Sheeran could sing into an iPhone mic and make it sound good. But I've honestly never put it up against a good LDC and thought it was better for any vocal, ever. It lacks detail and is grainy in comparison to LDCs. But it's a dynamic, it's not supposed to sound the same.
As a live vocal mic, it's outstanding though. Rejects off axis voices very well which makes it perfect for what your doing Wiz.

They are very cool mics. I've got a pretty loud, brash voice and the SM7b can handle it. Plus you can hold it and prowl around the room like a crazy person while you're tracking, which I enjoy.
I've done some live stuff while playing guitar and I've never gotten it to sound as good and phase coherent as that clip, but it certainly rejects better than any LDC is going to. I also like it on bass and almost any drum. It's like a smoother 57.

We are playing this song live, in one of the bands I am in atm... really reminds me of some sort of tune from the 60s, can't put me finger on it though.... its a great song, and the guy is a real talent for sure. Shure, should get onto this for advertising the SM7, cause It's really giving me the Jones'in to get one 8) anyone know what the pencil condensers are? cheers Wiz

Honestly, I feel like if I could get that kind of phase coherency, whilst I play and sing...most of the stuff I do, would be done like that.
cheers

Maybe just a crapload of moving those SDC's around in a large, good sounding room?

You have more issues with the amount of vocal in the acoustic tracks....not with having any acoustic in the Sm7.
My best bet for doing it is using HyperC on the 414eb for the acoustic. I don't like the sound as much as my 81s, but the 81s will end up picking up a lot of vocal. In the past, I've had the most isolation success with a HyperC Beyer Ribbon on the guitar....M160, maybe? It's a really my kind of acoustic tone, but I achieved nearly complete isolation.
