That classic song sounds like nothing after 8kHz/ 10 kHz. Put a 10- 12kHz 24db LPF on your mix bus, adjust the Q & mix thru it like tape limitations. ( or treat as if it’s going to vinyl )
Vocal all mids ( 350 Hz - 4kHz ) w either 2nd or third order distortion from over driving a gain stage.
HW or ITB Pultec the lead vocal, attenuate 100 Hz a lot between 5-9 on the dial & boost 3kHz while cutting 5 or 10KHz ( dep how mid range focused the voice is ) til that balance comes. Then post send to a parallel crush w a Fairchild/ LA2/ or 1176A if you need more mid focus & bite followed by Decapitator/ Black Box after. Use aux fader to blend w/ the lead.
The lead vox on I’m working on now has this & it sounds AMAZING! Chain: M7 blue line FET into RTZ 9762 -> WA76 -5 to -7 dB > ITB > UAD Pultec ( set like above ) > RComp - 3db > 1176 A parallel crush!
Sm7b, 47 w/ M7, 67, 87, could work or the new Redd mic. A blue line M7 capsule also will help that display that vintage mid push.

I thought someone on this forum was able to get people’s mics back?
I really hope everyone got their mics back in good working condition and not all the quality parts stripped out replaced w/ w/e...

I suggested both ( Coil & WT ) because they both cover a lot of sonic territory and compliment each other instead of being redundant. You got lots of good feedback here from users of both.
W/ the traditional gain on the Mercury it may not have enough gain for dynamics & ribbons but that is more of a thought not a concern or a don’t buy b/c statement.
Let’s us know how the demos go!

Also is a new Tegeler Audio ( German Company ) HW comp unboxed.
Funny he throws the XLR to mini jack lol That was for the usb dongle so u can monitor & get mic input to computer sound card ( no interface )

Nope, not the magical coherence from just the right bus comp: What’s the best adhesive for a fallen-off mic badge? It’s my Stam 67. Thanks! When I got a TLM67 and the MaxMod 67 kit I removed the fugly George Neumann head, filled the holes, sanded and painted. As part of that, I removed the Neumann badge and painted it black. I think I just used some Super Glue to put it back on. It's still on there so I guess it worked. Wow what a beautiful mic Ragan! Just seeing it inspires confidence & excitement! How much all in did it cost to make the TLM 67 into a this gorgeous creation? What type of patchbay? Do you recommend?

Coil Audio, Locomotive Audio, & Mercury all are great companies w/ high quality gear. CA & LA take great pride in their products sound quality & design. They both contribute to RGO & are members here so you would be supporting a peer’s small business! That’s where my $ would go! vintageking.com/coil-audio-ca-286s-single-channel-mic-line-amplifierThis link ^ shows the power supply comes WITH this single channel version for $1700. It uses all NOS parts as well & is quite a bit more fair priced than the Mercury M72 mk3 which is $2100 vs Coil $1700. Coil is giving you that good vintage NOS EF86 vibes in your life! Sounds esoteric to me They source, select, & test the BEST NOS parts for your preamp. I have read that people like to upgrade the tubes in the M72. Idk I feel a unit of that caliber should come with the NOS tubes people swap too. The Mercury is 28-58 db of gain like the originals. The WT72 has 50+ dB of gain, the Coil Audio 42-60 dB of gain. The CA 286 & Locomotive stuff is hand built & tested in USA. Check out a Locomotive 286a if you can find one. Locomotive provides a lifetime warranty as well. Coil audio is 1 year, would like to see 2 years at least. However I very highly doubt the Coil guys would a customer SOL. www.locomotiveaudio.com/wt-72Seeing as this circuit is based around EF86s & beefy transformers, If $$$ wasn’t an issue I’d get Coil Audio 286 x 2 & 2 Weight Tank WT 72. If $$$ is priority I would grab 2 WT72 & get to making music.

My questions & thoughts on this product & APB16 after watching several videos.
1.) Provide APB vs non APB level matched audio.
2.) Show off the analog circuits. If there is 6 analog modules ( controlled by APB plugins ) does that mean each channel has 6 analog circuits ( if 6 per ch this should be highlighted as a big selling point. )
3.) elaborate on the type of analog circuits used & what comps the APB models.
4.) commitment to more models ( would this need more analog circuits to properly emulate ? )
5.) Price point, $7000, very high until you show the customer the value.
6.) Explain the conversion process. Eq is digital but comps are analog on the APB16. If I eq then comp, that’s 1 D to A to APB, a 2nd A to D for Eq, a 3rd D to A from Eq to Comp, then a 4th A to D from comp going back into DAW. 4 round trips is a lot per ch esp times 8 or 16.
7.) 32 bit converters - which chips, why is this not a talking point? Who else makes 32 bit converters?
8.) What analog emulations can the APB do?
9.) How many analog effects per ch? 1 or 2?
10.) What type of analog circuits / components are used in the APB16?
11.) Does it have transformers or tubes? Pop the top lol
12.) ohhhh.. No tubes ... hmmmm... how there is a analog “ tube limiter “ w/ no tubes?
13.) So if I use the APB plug to choose my analog circuit, then tweak to my liking why would I need the moo mixer plugin?
14.) There is 4 comps & 2 limiters circuits available, any more APB analog models being developed?
15.) 3 saturators per channel? What kind/ type & what are they modeled on?
16.) Is the Digital peak limiter on the APB16 always active when going back into the DAW or only when you engage it to prevent overdriving the DAW converter?

The limited functions of the Moo plugin GUI aren’t really needed considering u can dial in everything on the APB plugin GUI. The moo mixer compression knob made things louder when compressing .. no thanks
This video & others I’ve watched doesnt do the APB justice ( moo mixer as well ) This product could really be successful if McDSP went in depth on the workflow.
The ABP 16 is $7k. Yes $7000. You know how much Weight Tank, Audioscape, & Capi etc you can get for $7000?

Hoping the product is not what we are expecting b/c many don’t seem in the least bit excited ( if we assuming correctly ) lol
Come on UAD I’m rooting for you but your moves have us confused.
Wonder what the heck they are doing with the Bock acquisition?

My friend uses Reason, all Virtual instruments except for vocal and direct guitar and bass. It’s really impressive! Sounds like it could have been mixed on an SSL maybe? Especially with MP3. Then again most of the VI’s would have been sampled or modeled through great chains. But.. it’s not exactly what I’m going for. Almost all the way where I want to be.. not quite far enough for me. Reason channel strip & mixing workflow is based off an SSL channel strip style workflow. Not sure if or how well it emulates the SSL sound but I know a few beat makers who always swore by their drum mixes in Reason. Not sure if that was due to the sound or what they know best. Now that u mentioned it I’m curious to go check out the Reason manual & see what it says about this lol.

That’s a whole lot of lovely gear there sir That’s more gear than most A rooms in ATL. Wow! Post them samples let them feel & hear the greatness!!! Man I forgot all about the Foote Control Systems Compressors .. That dude makes some amazing compressors. I wanted that P3S & another model he makes for the longest. Hopefully things pick up soon for me so I can get some new HW

This thread is what brought me to RGO thanks to roundbadge. I am in the market for a pair of mics for OH duties and the H 251s might be the ticket. I have a first run of the H47 fet which I love and use on kick out. On another note I recently sent in some brass capsule 414 eb's to Dave Wheeler to be re-skinned and didn't realize how involved he was in building the mics with Heiserman. Thanks for having me, lots of good info and people here. Mario Welcome to RGO! Glad you ventured over here 251’s for OH’s, wow that has to be sublime!

Mark, Beautiful song & great voice. When does the tour start? The guitar playing mixed w the vocal sits just right. The guitar serves as the foundation & the vocal skates effortlessly thru the song I prefer the Serrano here on your voice. It highlights the expression & nuances in a balanced way. The Stam does this as well, more pronounced tho w/ the added harmonic distortion. The Stam is my second pick. The Stam is adding a slight subtle harmonics that really fit this genre well. Depends what era you want vintage or modern. I would pick this if you want that vintage slightly colored ( in a good way ) singer songwriter sound. The Soyuz sound pristine, very balanced character for a tube based mic. It’s a little thinner in the lows & low mids then the others. This mic to me would be great for Celine Dion, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera. Mic is lean in their powerful frequencies when they get to belting. I get c12 / c800g vibes from this Soyuz. I thought the Soyuz 019 was supposed to be in the “ 67 “ camp ( technically a C800g is too lol )

What comps did the OP purchase?
As gear is more of a want than need for my workflow I tend to recommend the Weight Tanks, Audioscape, & Heritage Elite series of HW. Pieces that don’t break the bank & are HQ & good to great sound!

To me the Max Mod & Innertube stood out here. The Heiserman was nice & had the pro level sound but not as finished as the MM & IT. Pearlman didn’t do much for me & that’s the revered TM1 model. Odd cuz I have heard that version TM1 crush it before.
For the H47T & the pearlman to have the most ideal mic/ capsule related to singer placements, the MM & IT87 really sounded balanced but exciting, highlighting nuances of the performers voice.
I could be wrong but the guitar sounds mono. I would have duplicated & panned hard L & R to leave a more room for the vocals to be displayed. Or a spaced pair capture of the guitar.

Wow ... why did Neumann stop?
Customers want to take care of their mics w/o shipping all over the place. Mic techs rely on these parts to run their business.
Does Zen Pro still have Neumann parts for sale ? They had K870 capsules last month. Idk about transformers.
There is a Serrano 87 modeled off the 87i that’s getting some live around here. Maybe he can sell you a transformer but it won’t be authentic Neumann part obviously.

I want to support new & future UAD. My studio depends & revolves on my UAD Apollo. Mine has been awesome ( OG SF Quad )
It seems to me that UAD is out of touch w/ the current climate of “ studios “ & what UAD customers need/ want.
UAD has a DAW that’s incomplete & unavailable to windows users. This should be # 1 priority. Customers are even owilling to pay for feature updates.
What new “ analog emulation “ plugins do we really NEED? That $349 for the plugin can get you a lot of SW/ plugins elsewhere.
The Bock acquisition is odd to me as well.

As for a Luna controller, on the UAD forum, Drew also said, “Not sure it makes sense to make a controller for an app that's not done yet. Just sayin.” Just an observation I thought was relevant to the current discussion here. Regardless, always fun to speculate. I was ready to pull the trigger on an Apollo X, but am now contemplating waiting a couple of more weeks for the big reveal... Remember or factor in the Heritage jump in price but if you have plug in duplication, Drew consistently tells peeps call cs and talk alternatives, so UA seems flexible there and it’s like you are getting ultimate prices down around $40 per plug I think. Do you work for UAD Kcat? If not they should be paying you something

I know platinum songs recorded on sub $200 Blue mics into mbox.
No one is rushing out to buy X song cuz it was recorded w a 1949 Large Body U47 into Fairchild #7 into Neve 80 series.
Better tools make the whole process more exciting & easier to get quicker high quality results. Efficiency & Enthusiasm:) that’s why I own the ( small amount of ) quality gear that I do!

Cheap Chinese condensers, that is the line in the sand, nothing like the guy with an MXL through a Decent Neve clone and a Warm 1176. Yeah, Chinese mics suck but shouldn’t stop a capable engineer of using their ears & mic techniques to capture useable takes. I have used Miktek C3/ C7/ C1 into a tonebeast into a WA76 w/ great results. One who is capable should def be able to get something nice out of that chain you listed.

I used to ( & sometimes till do ) get in my own way of creating cuz i want to hear what it will sound “ mixed “. This happened a lot more before I started use top of the line analog signal chain. When using a good to great vocal chain just talking into the mic is inspiring & sounds “ finished “
As far as no mixing & mastering, you have to know your capabilities, your monitors, acoustic treatment & room affect every decision & you can’t mix or master what you can’t accurately hear.
My greatest upgrade was acoustic treatment, Barefoot FP01, & FP01 Sound Anchor stands, a measuring mic, & SPL meter.
