So I'm looking at adding A decent compressor to my line up. I included a little document to help me gather my thoughts. The document contains all the compressors that I currently own and use. I am running a MOTU AVB rig for my interface. I have 2 24Ai's and 2 24Ao's so 48 channels i/o all together. I am running 24 channels out to the patchbay and using 24 channels direct into hardware. Some times I track with compression and those stay on the patchbay so I can set up a chain. I have been slowly moving back to a Brauer style compression approach where instead of printing every single track through hardware I am using a few compressors for character and bussing and doing parallel compression with those. My DAW is Studio One 4 so pipeline is how I route things in and out..........Whew are you as confused as I am yet? Question is I have about $1500 that I've cobbled together to add a compressor and my local shop has 3 pieces available. I am wondering which of these is the best compliment to what I already have. Notice I didn't say the best compressor ever. I'm looking for the best compliment. The options are 1. Manley ELOP 2. Avalon AD2044 3. Summit DCL200

So - I’m on my phone and the list isn’t downloading. So excuse me if I’m already saying something you already have. Anyway - from what I’m gathering, you’re asking for good tracking compressors? Three come to mind. Only two are available immediately ish
1) Stam 1176 ADG 2) Audioscape V comp 3) CAPI 526

Sorry John, that wasn't too clear. I did add a jpeg of my comp list to make it easier but I am looking at another stereo compressor more for mixing duties and parallel compressing.

Take a look at the Buzz Audio DBC. It’s great on busses. It’s a diode bridge comp that will give you a very different flavor than your 33609 comp.

An opto makes sense with what you have. I like the tone of the ELOP. I’ve used the Avalon and Summit as well but they aren’t as immediately gratifying. I’ve not used the + version they sell now

From the list you've got I'd either get another opto or vari-mu. Mentioned Liverpool seems like a good deal, I think it is an excellent compressor and a pair may be within your budget.

I would add the jlm la500a opto to your list. because of trumps war on everything you can get 3 for your budget. or 2 and a lunchbox. or if you can solder, buy the kits and get 4 for your budget.
they sound exceptional, have very good features plus stereo linking.
the only thing you could argue missing when mixing is a 1:1.5 ratio.

Consider a pair of Weight Tanks in your quest....

I dunno, to complement what you already got...they are weight tanks alright. Maybe a Honda or a Makita with a fairly low dBA A-weighted.

1. Nobody read the last post in this thread. 2. Nobody wants to hurt my feelings. 3. Nobody understands what I am talking about. 4. My joke wasn't funny.

What are you looking for, do you think? The V-Comp is insane for vocal weight and light smoothing. The LA2a is as smooth as it gets. The 76 blue stripe and black stripe are insanely effective

I was checking out Audioscape but everything was out of stock. I guess I need to keep watching them. Hey man! ;-) Before I get into it, let me first thank all of you who mentioned us! MUCHO appreciated! Before I make my recommendation and why, let me start by saying.... demand for ALL of our products is INSANE right now. We list several small batches of varying products multiple times a week, but these small batches all sell out within either minutes or an hour or so after going up. We list EVERY new, small batch at 8PM EST on any given day! The BEST thing to do is follow us on Instagram / Facebook where we post almost daily "INVENTORY UPDATES" (and ofc, lots and lots of gear porn ) so thay everyone knows what will be going up that night (or whichever day is mentioned in the post) as well as what's coming down the pipeline, what we're waiting on and an ETA for when certain units will be back in stock! OK, PHEW! NOW, based on the current compressors you own (nice setup, BTW!) and the fact that you're doing a Brauer style rear buss / parallel deal with your compressors, my personal recommendation for you would be a.... D-COMP !!! This is a stereo unit, and COMPLETELY different (sonically) from any other piece of gear you have. It's an old, zener-diode based circuit that has quickly become a "swiss army knife" compressor for MANY, MANY folks. Lot of guys are using these also in their mastering rigs or on 2BUSS, where it also EXCELS. The D-COMP is capable of things that no other compressor out there can quite do. It adds a very unique "point" to transients that will put a HUGE smile on your face. ;-) On top of that, as mentioned, it's EXTREMELY versatile and literally doesn't sound bad on anything that I've thrown at it. NOW, what your choice will come down to is personal preference and as Ward mentioned, which primary applications you're looking to use this new compressor for, most worked in genre' and your overall sonic "preferences"! The V-COMP would also be AMAZING and different from what you currently own, but I honestly think the D-COMP will give you the most OPTIONS considering your mixing style / process. I hope this helps! Any further clarification needed, please feel free to ask! We're here for you my man; to make the BEST gear purchase for YOUR specific needs, just as we do all of our customers who take the time to reach out and ask!

Has anybody cloned the API 2500? It's a very flexible compressor with a punchy, brighter sound than your typical SSL type stereo compressor. I saw one used for $2,200.00 on Reverb, but that's beyond your budget.
