thanks levon. interesting you go the other way than me. was the original GJ setup the u47 over snare? I've always put the u87 (clone) over the snare. well, I don't know why. Not sure what mics Glyn Johns used, I just referred to the basic setup. I use my 47 over the snare because that's the best mic I have and I wanted it capture as much of the drumkit as possible. The 87 is a Neumann AI version that was lovingly tuned by Andreas Grosser. He also built my 47. The funny thing is that, with this setup, the 2 'overheads' can be totally different mics and it still sounds great.

The new version of Addictive Drums seems to be quite, well, addictive. A friend of mine swears by it. I heard some samples and they sounded pretty good.

yeah, that's why I posted the question. I'd been thinking a pair of oktavas in xy and sm57 on snare with sm7b on kick. but in the back of my mind I really want to try u47 over tom and u87 over snare and sm7b on kick recorderman style because I know those mics in those positions work well. I use the 47 over the snare/tom and the 87 over the floortom (Glyn Johns style) with a D12 in front of the kick and a Telefunken M80 on the snare. Sounds very good in my little room. Often I overdub fills and use an MD421 on each tom. The Glyn Johns thingy works extremely well.

I have never used Google or Spotify and I stopped buying from A.mazon (had to insert the full stop coz it automatically inserted a link to their site, WTF?) last year. There are alternatives.

I love the UAD Fairchild. Sometimes the 660 sounds better to me than the 670. John, how do you use it dual mono on a stereo buss? Just flip the side chain link button Doh, you're right

Yep, they knew it was impossible to get someone who could fit in the big hole his death left in the band. it's very unfair. MoonTheLoon and Bonzo had to die young and we have to listen to guys like Lars Ulrich for decade after decade...sigh. We don't really HAVE to listen to Lars Ulrich, right?

Extreme Isolation EX-29. Best isolation I ever had and I track really loud.I used M50s before, but always had leakage and they sounded really muffled compared to the EX-29.

The thing that this does.. that you don't know you need, until you use it.. is tighten and sweeten the bottom end of everything it touches... You set cut and boost to about 4.5 on each dial and then click the low end selection and one of them will be Goldilocks... just right! I tell ya, at the US price this thing is... grab a few. cheers Wiz That's exactly what I do with my Retro 2A3, so do I need another Warm Pultec? BTW, with the lousy $ exchange rate, the Warm is €750 here right now. I feel like I answered my own question...

Reviving this thread. For those of you in the know, I've got a question. I'm very tempted by the Warm Pultec, however, I have here a nice Retro 2A3 stereo unit that I love, especially on the mixbus, but also on vocals and bass. Has anyone used the two and compared it? Since I spent a nice dime on the Retro already, does it make sense to spend more on the Warm Audio unit (except for the killer look)? Advice is appreciated. I would think that would be extremely redundant... That's what I fear as well, but man, the GAS...

I whole hearted-ly agree, Levon and that goes especially for the artists. So many stars these days come in and sing and leave the rest to the studio guys. Sad that they don't have the time or care to invest time at the studio on their own records. I have seen it a lot. R These 'stars' are probably also mostly in the business of making money. If they would make more money selling toilet paper, they would just do that. It's sad. Unfortunately, the 'music industry' is full of non-musicians.

They are riding input levels to hit a certain spot on the outboard gear. That allows them to mix very fast and sadly, pretty formula. I don't follow that school at all. I am not in the business to see how fast I can mix a song. I am in it to see how good I can mix it. R You're spot on Randy, but these guys are paid per song, right? They're not in the business of seeing how fast they can mix, they're in the business of making as much money as possible. More songs per day, more money. Okay, they're good and the stuff sounds good on radio, but, as mentioned, it tends to get sterile and formulaic. Personally, I prefer raw and emotional mixes and I think, ideally, people who are mixing should somehow be involved in the creation (i.e. writing/arranging/tracking) of a song.

No, I also use IP for some stuff, they're good. But saying that I wouldn't buy Ivory again because some piano players don't like it is a bit farfetched. I am also an 'instrumentalist', btw, and I like what I hear in Ivory. As I said, everyone's taste is different.

Have had a few piano players in my studio and do let them rate by taste what sounds the most realistic to them. Sure how the thing was tracked plays a role as well. As far as I know there is not one solution that gives you all. BTW they all disliked Ivory and much liked samples by this.... www.imperfectsamples.com/In other words I would not buy Ivory again. I'd rather listen to my own ears than to what others say. Their taste may be quite different.
