I've been looking at a lot of new VST/AAX Piano's...1990 by Kontact...Alicia's Keys...what are you using/tend to favor?

My fav is still the emotional piano. Probably not complimentary for a lacquered hammer C7 style track that cuts thru a rock band though. Alecia's Keys works for that. There's a new piano out that's getting rave reviews. Pearl by Impact Soundworks. A very lyric C7. soundcloud.com/isworks/sets/pearl-concert-grand-demosHaven't tried it yet, but it's getting a lot of good comments.

Ivory. It's all I ever need. This. I've always thought Ivory was the best.

Have had a few piano players in my studio and do let them rate by taste what sounds the most realistic to them. Sure how the thing was tracked plays a role as well. As far as I know there is not one solution that gives you all. BTW they all disliked Ivory and much liked samples by this.... www.imperfectsamples.com/In other words I would not buy Ivory again.

Does Ivory require a dongle? What about the others? I have bad luck with dongles and my system is static (I don't need to take the software with me anywhere anyway).

So with IP - these are straight samples - no algorithms for sympathetic vibrations - control over damper/pedal noise - different mics, mic placement, etc.?? I like that they are cheap and I suppose I can audition them on the site and pick the one or two that I like - but from there, how versatile are they?

Unless you're going to pay to get to the 'Ivory' level, the Mini Grand in Pro Tools is just fine. Ivory is the best there is, IMHO, but Mini Grand is pretty awesome too... and I can give you an EQ setting for the bright setting that truly brings it out like 'lacquered hammers'.

Some are with and without I lok... synthogy.com/register/index.htmlThe IP are not that much versatile but they do sound very impressive. Buy one and I guarantee you will buy another pack soon too. I like the idea of not being too expensive.

And by no means do the IP samples sound bad.... so what.

No, I also use IP for some stuff, they're good. But saying that I wouldn't buy Ivory again because some piano players don't like it is a bit farfetched. I am also an 'instrumentalist', btw, and I like what I hear in Ivory. As I said, everyone's taste is different.

I like Alicia's Keys and Piano In Blue over Ivory.

Don't sleep on the XLN Audio Piano's either...They're cheap and very, very tweakable.

THIS looks intriguing. Or maybe I'm just being impressed by the pictures of microphones!

From what I've used & heard, & not necessarily in order: 1) Ivory II (Synthogy) 2) Ravenscroft (VI Labs)

I did like the Mini Grand when I was using PT. Unfortunately I switched over to the "other" dark side and I now use Logic Pro. It was a good choice for me; generally speaking I'm happier with LP, but I do miss the PT piano.

I really like Ivory's American Concert D library. it's my current piano of choice when I want that "jazz piano trio playing in the background of the scene' sound.

Steering clear of the dongle. Alicia's Keys is "Kontact" based - So how would that work with Logic? Does Kontact runs as a VST?

The 8dio 1928 Steinway is currently on sale for $129. I'll be picking this one up on Saturday. Aside from the Ravenscroft, it's the best I've heard. They also make a 1969 Steinway that rules as well. It's a bit brighter sounding to me. Some of the piano VSTs that come stock with Native Komplete are totally usable as well. 8dio.com/instrument/1928-steinway/Rich

That Ravenscroft is stunning. Sounds like something John Tesh would play.
