Look at the bright side though, once they fully move to 500, the Xracks will be cheap! Yeah I wonder how much lower they can go.... typical ebay prices are already about 40-60% of new. ionian , regarding the 32 memory banks, I wasn't planning on really even using the presets if I can back up directly to the project, but then again, I've never seen how that actually plays out. I wonder how much of a hassle it is to back up via midi data. levon , any comments on the recall via midi sysex data? Sorry, no comments, I don't use recall....

I use the X-rack E-series EQs, they're sort of cleanish but I find them quite useful, especially when you use other coloring stuff in the chain.

Since last year i follow Bob O.'s advice. I won't go back to any noiseshaping fancy anymore. TPDF all the way long now, also on final dither. If i look at the graphs i remember why. ~ -132dB flat. Nothing remotely harsh, strange or funny in the top end. Works for me. Period. With the others i always had to cross check and sometimes one sounded better, sometimes another one....but no. I wanted them to sound better. They didn't... can you explain, how you implement this, and what you use? cheers Wiz I second this request

Adam A77X and Auratones. Very happy with the combination. But, due to my deteriorating hearing, I spend a lot more time with headphones. I have recently discovered the Sonarworks Reference plugin, that gives headphones a flat frequency curve. I'm still evaluating it, but it seems to work very good, could be an ideal solution for headphones mixing. Back on topic...

I have a 1978 JMP and a 2007 DSL50 and both never gave me trouble. The one time that the output transformer blew was my fault. I would take a Marshall any day, but I'm a Marshall guy, ever since I saw Clapton, Hendrix and Page playing them in the 1970s. I even like the small anniversary 1-watters, they still have that tone. I'll be getting the Silver Jube reissue as soon as it's available over here. I like Fender clean and crunch tones, but not so much the overdrive, but I agree, it's a matter of taste and what rocks your world.

I'm quite happy with my UAD EMT 140, Space Designer and Redline Reverb. I also love my Lexicon PCM Native Reverb and, of course, my Lexicon and Eventide hardware. I guess I'm all set. Wait, I still need/want a nice stereo spring reverb. That Vermona DSR-3 looks very tempting.

Sidebar question, I've always been curious about those drum mic kits. You know, where they give you 5 mics for $500, or something like that. I never record drums here, but do enjoy planning ahead for a day when I have my own recording room. I'd like to know if any of those pre-made kits would beat just getting a few SM57's, a couple of pencil condensers, and maybe one big ass kick mic, like an RE-20. Most of the time a bunch of 57s are a better bet, but then I do have like 6 sets of dynamic drum mics, so go figure! The other day, I tried an bunch of 57s on toms, just for shits and giggles, and was surprised how full that sounded, who wudda thunk.

FWIW, the majors didn't scrap the presses. CDs are pressed on modified vinyl presses. That's why the format was created. The irony is that vinyl went away because stores refused to order and stock it after CDs came out and nobody was discounting them. As far as I know there was no particular drop in consumer demand. I dig a mono room mic generally(omni/8), it seems to fit into my image schemes easier, the overheads are 90% of the drum sound to me. Surely you must own a matched pair of Beyer MC930 mics then? They are the hands-down best mics for capturing the entire sound of the kit from an overhead position. I use a pair of Gefell MV691s with M7 (or is it M70??) capsules for room mics, how do the Beyers compare to those, anybody knows?

The listeners are bored because most pop country tunes are formulaic to a fault. You have similar singers singing in the same keys, using what constitutes as mostly the same structure song to song...in some cases the same tempo's over and over. Most top 40 country is unfortunately cookie-cutter musically and tonally. You pair that up with the same boring lyrics about Rednecks and 'Merica track to track...it's a blur of uninspired and mostly insipid songwriting in general. That is not to say there isn't fantastic authentic country music, or the occasional modern song that really does have soul...but it's a genre I can barely listen to if I'm honest with myself...guitar solo's aren't going to save you from being bored and unchallenged to begin with. The problem, as usual, is an unwillingness on the business side to broaden the horizons of genres legitimately...and taking a hacksaw to what is "allowed" in a top 40 production will only serve to further homogenize things. Pop, Hip-Hop, and Dance Music are all essentially variants of EDM currently...because all these productions do is play it safe. I know a lot of folks aspire to break into top 40 country or work on those kinds of productions, but playing ball with the suits over and over will eventually dilute the genre you love in much the same way until it's unrecognizably similar to all other top 40 genres. Spot on! Thank God there's still Rock.

I forget to mention that I also started to use an 'over-kick mic', something that Eric Valentine does. I bought a Mojave Ma-201 that has a U67-ish character for that duty and it turned out pretty good. Greg Wells describes that method in one of the Pensado videos.
