FWIW, the majors didn't scrap the presses. CDs are pressed on modified vinyl presses. That's why the format was created.
The irony is that vinyl went away because stores refused to order and stock it after CDs came out and nobody was discounting them. As far as I know there was no particular drop in consumer demand.

I can remember that the change over was very slowley. One reason was that the first CD players have ben expensive. It would be something like 2000$ today. As far as I rember the industry was, as always, very sceptical. Very late they recognized that they can sell thier back catalouge a second time to the consumers.... with the advent of mp3 the game was over. The first CD I heard was Boston's Third Stage and I remember thinking, mans that bright.

The CD didn't actually do very well before there were players in computers.
