Haven't done MWTM but there is so much to learn if you get a pro Puremix subscription. From Protools shortcuts to Andrew Scheps / Lord-Alge / Fab Dupont all mixing the same song there's a wealth of info - great value IMO. Cheers, Ross

If I get a great sounding mic I'm keen as the rest of its operation - hpf, pattern selection, pad and the build are implemented with quality. Is it just a cap swap or are there electronics to change? Cheers, Ross

Tim, I hoped you might chime in.i would go for your cap all day long if it's an easy mod and worth spending on those electronics. ?

Hi guys, I have a Ride NT 2000, a physically well built mic which works well on many levels except it's sonic signature which I suspect is very much down to capsule . Ben from Beesneez has told me his k7 cap would be a big improvement and an Aus mob who I know nothing of called Open Plan Recording recommend their CK cap. Anyone have anything to fill in my picture? Cheers, Ross

It's great to have you back Eric even if it is to respectfully disagree😃 I bought a Rev 7 when it first came out and like a lot of Yamaha units it sounded metallic and underwhelming to my ears. YMMV, Cheers ,Ross

Also, if distance , Omni etc is giving you too much rubbish room, try different gobo arrangements. Cheers, Ross

Distance , placement and mic are where you have to concentrate; all the eq in the world won't prooerly fix recorded resonance IME . Don't be afraid to try more distance, the mic in Omni and/or off to the neck side with a mic with the right sonic signature. E.G an 84 will probably exacerbate your issue even though it is widely acknowledged to be a great mic, just as micing the soundhole is not a goer. This is a case when you have to use your ears and feel free to possibly break conventional wisdoms. Cheers, Ross

John, the 1 x15 I had , had a broad band 180 -200 ish emphasis which made vocals difficult to assess (I actually took them into the open air to confirm it wasn't my room) so ended up selling and taking a huge bath on them. The importer said they were fine when he got them back to sell on consignment so I wouldn't go there myself FWIW. Of course others have trumpeted them from the roof tops...... Cheers, Ross

I have an original AT 25 and it is a fine robustly built mic which works on all things bass-ish without frustrating EQ . It may benefit from a tad more natural fat bottom but I'm being ultra critical here.
The original 88 is a great Kik sound imo but has been known to have possible as said diaphragm issues over time.
The D112 is not particularly likeable because of its eq'd sound ; it does have bottom end through.
I'm a fan of the MD 441 fwiw. Never tried the Audio.
No answers for you just my experience

I absolutely get the working in mono angle of it but my point is if you've got the sides as a big part of your sound then in mono that sound is dead in the water and the balance of that instrument could now be too low. Cheers, Ross

Can someone tell me why we are so into M/S; I know it sounds lovely in ideal situations but if it is momo-ed for whatever reason , the sides are cancelled and depending on how much you've made of that sound it can turn to the proverbial. Yeah, I know Im probably showing my age but a lot are listening on a single blue tooth speaker.... School me. Cheers, Ross

You could make a record with just SM7s and it would sound good; Id rather use a 441 (have you checked European price?) as to my ears it you would get your sounds more easily. . Cheers, Ross

The SM7 Is a very good everyday workhorse but is not IMO a "really must have". It's probably been elevated in status by the internet. A higher quality SM57 is a fairly accurate reading of it The best all round dynamic I know of is the Sennheiser MD 441 which is a similar workhorse and which covers more bases (acoustic / vox / kik / hi-hat etc.etc ) better IMO. In Europe I imagine you could score that at a more reasonable price

Off axis as Bluegrassdan has said and also Rowboats phase reversal is the absolute duck's nuts if you've the time - you can automate according to how much cancellation is required for each piece and also the original track stays intact.(Tks Rowmat one of the best tips ever) Cheers, Ross

An interesting point regarding MG M7s is that Klaus on another forum noted they were not as good in their recent past incarnations; also well known engineer JJ Blair alluded to their lack of high end so it might be worth tempering the lust a little even though Tim is in their corner with the 92. You can only go on your experience - can't tell you what model Schoeps it was but my experience through Nagra pres was they sounded truly real and allowed all the subtleties such as the sound of the room to be beautifully present. Should have done a KM 84 comparison for future reference but was so enamoured of the Schoeps , comparisons seemed redundant. Mics of the upper echelon for sure. Cheers, Ross
