My M88 died and Beyerdynamic hasn’t even replied to my repair request. The mic was 3 years old. While I sort this out with the dealer, I’m recording kick with an SM7B (and it works surprisingly well!!!) This has me thinking about buying a new kick mic, and I would love to hear what you currently use and why For my musical taste buying a vintage AKG D12 would be the obvious choice, but I’m scared of buying a mic that won’t be repairable in case of failure.

A new AKG D12vr. Pre-eq'd but not obnoxious.

Try as I may I just can’t seem to get in with the D6. I like what audio was thinking but for me they gave me too much i what I wanted and I can’t dial it back...I actually prefer their D4 to the D6 on Kick...but I’m finally happy with the Electrovoice ND/868....which for lack of a better explanation....just feels right to me.

Usually an Audio Technica ATM25 or RE20. Often I’ll do a Fet 47 clone or a ribbon outside the kick.
I would also like to get an old AKG D12/20/30 but have the same reservations. I am in interested in trying the D12vr. Clips and reviews seem interesting.

Here the regular dynamic options are e602, RE20, or 666. Buying a vintage D12/variant does not seem wise at this late date. There are people who have developed a repair technique that sometimes works, but......
Various room mics, that's all over the place in terms of overall approach.
Oh yeah....recently frequently an omni KM131 on beater side to capture equal mix of K/S. Aim for something that could be the entire drum sound.

e602 user as well. Outside is a crapshoot. Lately a U47 (more like a FOK mic, but it makes for a massive bass drum sound).

RE20 Kick In
Been experimenting with guitar cabs as subkick. Last recording session used an old Gretsch Pro Bass with a 15” Jensen P15N right in front of the kick padded into a ZOD DI to good effect.

D6 kick in, 121 kick out.
Sometimes sm7 or re20 inside but I keep coming back to the D6 inside.

I did this with an old 15" bass cabinet back in the 90's before everyone knew the subkick trick. I did it because I ran out of mics and needed something for kick and had previously used a set of headphones turned inside out as an impromptu stereo mic to good results so I figured why not.

RE20, sometimes a D12. N/D868 for live stuff. Looking forward to using the Heiserman 47 when we resume recording but still haven't had a chance. I've run into the Beta 52s a LOT in club gigs and really don't like them - the baked in EQ is way too much and not what I'm looking for. In most cases (the 868 being the exception) I really dislike "kick mics" that have baked in EQ - it's almost always wrong for what I'm looking for. My boards (live and recording) have all the EQ that I need - I don't need or want some labcoat guy's idea of what a kick mic should sound like, I want a relatively neutral mic with great low end that I can EQ appropriately for the music at hand. And I absolutely despise "kick mics" with a built-in click boost. I don't like clicky kick drums.
I've experimented with using speakers as sub-kicks but they're not really appropriate for the sort of music I'm doing now.

Ok, I use various kick mixs depending on music type and application INSIDE MIC[/u] AKG D12E - vintage with a point AKG D112 - scooped and pointy like crazy. TOO much really. Good for metal Telefunken M82 - Has switches for the 350 cut and the high boost. Mist flexible and best for rock and Country BEST CHOICE EV RE27 - the most perfect natural kick microphone ever. OUTSIDE MICNeumann U47FET - you know this sound! Heiserman 47 FET - just like the Neumann except it has a tiny bit of 350 scooped out and a tiny bump at 2k and a little bump at 4K. seriously, buy this microphone if you want a point and use /idiot-proof U47FET

ATM25... takes EQ better than most kick mics After hearing the kick on your last Billboard #1 single, this mic is SERIOUSLY on my radar. Are you using it inside the kick or outside D?

e902 in the hole
M88TG on the outside head
works for me
I have used other configurations in the past but this one has been up for several months now, and is current
I have to have two mics, one mic is rarely satisfying to me.
