I’ve just started recording live drums again. I use either a Beta 52 (my favorite of the ‘kick drum’ mics) or an RE20. I use an LDC on the outside, right now it’s an Oktava 319.

i have such a shitty kick ... it always sounds like a cardbox. so i put ANY mic up as i know i will replace it with a sample 95% of the times. when i record someone elses set i mostly use a simple akg d112 and a mje hulk condenser.

Yeah I like the beta 52 as a workhorse. It usually sounds fine and takes eq a bit better than the d6 to me once you gut it a little bit around 300 and 500 ish but the d6 high end tends to be cleaner. Just the d6 can never get back the weight it doesn't have in the low mids

EV N/D868 fan here as well and also for floor tom. You reminded me that I picked up 3 0r 4 ev660's for close to nothing a few years ago thinking they could be an interesting option for toms but havent tried them yet. Ev nd46 is a newer mic that works well on toms that Ive tried. It seems "faster" than older ev mics but still relatively natural sounding like most ev.Pivot mounting system like the ev 308 facilitates placement. Could be interesting on kick. I'll compare the n46 to the nd 868 on kick next drum session

I don't have the best luck with "profit," when I let gear go, people tend to get things from me a bit cheaply. Good for them, I guess, is one way to look at it.

e602 inside, most often. Maybe a RE-20. If anything on the outside, an AT4047 or LoFreq, depending on what I'm looking for.

I've been sticking with the AT4040 on the outside. I really like the low end I get from it. It feels extended and pretty deep but also has the 100hz, 500hz, 700hz, and 1kHz stuff I kinda want in some amount on my kicks. I don't mind EQing the hell out of a kick drum mic and it always seems like that 4040 sounds good. I basically low pass it and cut the mids to the amounts that serve the song then blend with the inside mic.
Inside mic for me is an odd thing. I don't like most "kick" mics. If I need it to feel like a live metal kick drum during tracking then I'll do a D6 and use a sample in the mix instead because I really dislike how it sounds...but I just got rid of it so no more of that! I tend to like my Heil PR40 or an SM7B inside the kick. Both give me a good amount of all the frequencies I need and seem to take EQ well for the stuff I don't want. I think I'm going to try a Sennheiser e604 inside in the future. It SEEMS like it should be good - it's good on deep floor toms - but I'm not sure how the mids/highs are going to turn out.

Haven’t used it yet, but my studio partner got the Roswell mic that’s tuned for kick and he really likes it on kick out.

AKG D12 in the hole halfway - if I have a ported front head Heiserman H47 fet outside.
Also digging my Alien 8 but it's so hard to beat the D12 H47 combo for me

D112 is a great floor tom mic. I've seen plenty of other people use it for that too. I'm willing to get into a kickboxing match about it if necessary. Whilst this is true, what do you pair it with? It's kind of nice to have matching microphones when mic'ing tom-toms. Has anyone used 2-4 D112s on a complement of tom-toms? I've stuck with matched sets of 421s, CAD M179s or U89s (all I use these days) for Toms-toms, unless I'm using more than 3. Eye! Been a while but used to run FOH for a band where the drummer had D112's mounted inside his toms with the May miking system. They were great. Excellent sound... really fat & nice attack. Not much EQ needed. Very little leakage from being internally mounted. And amazingly fast setup just plug an XLR into the shell no stands or anything else to muck with. I've been known to run a pair of D112 on rack & floor... sometimes... I only have one D112 here. Seen a few other bands use Beta 52's on toms... Queens etc Think I've tried just about everything on kick drums at one point or another. Probably last favorite combo was SM57 in and M147 out. Also run 421 in and 414B/ULS out with 414 in figure 8. Probably the only spot I actually like that 414. Toms are often Sennheiser 609's. Can't stand the Audix D6. Sounds like instant metal in a can. Ick. Whatever they did to bake that sound in... either works or it doesn't and when it doesn't seems like no amount of EQ can save things. No more M88's on kick for me. I've blown up at least 4.

I've blown up at least 4. 100% agree on the D6. I've never liked it in a mix. It's a good way to get a sound really quickly live and then you'll always know what you're working with and working around...but I always use something else if I can. I don't mind doing a bunch of EQ to get a better sound. A bunch of EQ on a D6 sounds worse than a bunch of EQ on a PR40, or a PR48, or a Beta52 (that's not messed up), or a SM7B, or an EV 868...the list goes on. I've been wanting to try my M88 in a kick. It sounds to me like it would be perfect at capturing that sound in a way I want it to be captured. Mine's a vintage one I got from a guy who bought it a million years ago so there's no way in hell I'm doing anything that could blow it up. It just gave me a really great snare shell sound the other day and a perfect lightly driven single coil sound on a 4x12 yesterday (as well as hundreds of other really fantastic sounding sound captures) and I'm not willing to risk that. I've also heard of people blowing up their Beta52s. They're such an awkward mic that a lot of times people will put them right at the hole in the kick reso head. Well, if you happen to get it in the right spot, the air funneling and rushing past the hole puts a ton of pressure on the diaphragm and can blow it up. Half the Beta52s I've had to use live sounded absolutely terrible. It makes me curious if more people are blowing theirs up than realize it.

The past few years I've been using an RE20, since my D12s became unreliable. I also sometimes use an EV N/D 868, especially live.
HOWEVER I'm planning on switching to a 2 mic setup with kick in and out, using the Heiserman 47 FET for the kick out and the RE230 for in, as soon as we resume recording.

I use a Beta 52a in the kick and an AT4047 on the outside. Between the two, I can dial in whatever sound the song needs. I used to use a RE20 as well on the inside. Its more neutral and works well for some things.

I’ve liked the 4047 on kick out in the past too. Got some great sounds with it.

I’ve liked the 4047 on kick out in the past too. Got some great sounds with it. Ragan I've noticed you tend to like things that are rounded on the top and huge in the low end. I guess you get enough of those together and it makes this big sound, or something. It seems like you would like the Martin dreadnaught acoustic guitars, is that true for you? My drummer friend was saying his martin was too dark and hard to play or something and I was like, well, that's my sound, hand it over buddy. I own a D28, his is a D16GT.

Beta 52 inside. Still in search of Something I like better but These seem to have a good bit of low end and don’t make the kick sound like a glazed ham. I’ve tried everything else and nothing really beat the low end of the beta 52. Heiserman Type 19 on the outside. Massive fast low end. Replaced the trusted Soundelux U195 which had replaced the FET47.

I love D112s on Toms. Depending on the drummer the cymabal hash on the rack tom could be a problem. Never the less it’s at least always on the floor.

FWIW I haven’t put a mic inside the kick in 25 years. Always outside.
