I always mic kick outside. If I need more attack in a mix I'll just create a sampled track.
Last recording I used Alien8 mic from Dr. Alien Smith. Loved it. The settings allow for shaping and interesting choices.
But I've also really liked using my EV RE-320 and my Chandler Limited TG Mic. I've rotated the 320 to the floor and the TG to mono overhead.

Shure Beta 91 inside (suspended in a Kelly Shu Flatz holder), Neumann Fet47 on the outside, Evans EQ dampening pad, no port hole.

Been looking at those alien8 mics — any other users care to comment on them?
… in the meanwhile using Heil pr40 or pr48 inside and TG out

SNIP . . . Maybe a RE-20... SNIP The past few years I've been using an RE20, . . . SNIP You all have got to try an RE27 instead! Why? What does it do differently from the RE20? I don't generally like kick mics that are intentionally hyped in any region - if I want to boost something, that's why consoles have EQ sections.

More headroom and more output. And it sounds a lot more natural, without the accentuated upper mid 'conk' the 20 is known for. Borrow one, try it and see if you can hear a worthwhile difference. Can't hurt

Digging up an old thread. I recently got a NEW ATM25 from Japan. Shipping was very fast. I've been using a combination of a Beta 52A in the port and a AT4047 6" off the front head. I was looking for a little less attack and more midrange body on a recent project. I gave the ATM25 a shot. Man! That sounds great on kick. Well worth the money. It kind of reminds me of how a RE20 sounds on a kick. For this Americana thing I'm working on, the ATM25 was just right. If I were doing more aggressive music or metal, I might use the Beta 52A again, but for now, the ATM25 stays on the kick.

Surprised more people don't use the RE320. Like an RE20, but have a built in EQ shape switch that scoops some mids out if you want

Though a couple of years ago I picked up the akg D12vr and really like it. It replaced my e602 which never worked alone without the 47. Have recently recorded a lot with only d12vr on kick and it works great. I have the atm230 on toms and they sound great, so I can imagine the 25 is a good call.

Still stick mostly to an Electrovoice RE27 on inside kick, and a Neumann U47FET on outside kick.
Tend to mix about 75% 47 and 25% RE27.

I freakin love a Royer 121 on kick out. Inside I don’t need the low lows so much and I’m fine with a mid scooped kinda thing just because the Royer has me covered. Inside is more about how much point to put on the drum at mix.
My studio partner bought the Roswell k47 that’s tuned for kick drum, sounds good on the stuff I’m mixing for him, but I haven’t placed it myself yet.

Has anyone compared the Heil PR40 and the PR48?
I was at a conference at Webster University a couple weeks ago. The PR40 about half in and half out of the hole, angled toward the beater, plugged into schools new API aXs console (212 pre) sounded GREAT!

I haven't directly compared them, no, but I use my PR40 at the studio for kicks pretty regularly. One of the bands I do sound tech work for uses a PR48 in the kick. I get good sounds out of both. The PR40 needs more EQ because it's an un-messed-with-preset-EQ curves-mic. It can also get super hard/aggressive sounding in the 2-4khz area. The PR48 seems to be relaxed there and have a click up around 6-8kHz. I love the PR40 and use it all the time because I'm happy to EQ the stuff out I don't want for the additional benefit of having some midrange frequency content in the 700-1.5kHz area. I love that area on kicks and most "kick mics" pre-EQ it out.

I freakin love a Royer 121 on kick out. This is cool, I’m going to try it here. Do you angle the R121 or use a pop filter to protect the ribbon? Or do you face the kick straight on for the kick out position? Thanks.

So, it depends on how large and how the port is placed. It definitely is hard to make it sound bad, to be honest. Of course, its relationship to OHs and close mics etc. should be scrutinized and checked for polarity etc. as per usual.

I’m using the Beyer TG D71 inside, with the Beyer TG D70 at the port. Really like this combo!
Would love an LDC as well for Kick Out, but haven’t been able to justify a FET47ish mic in my setup, as I’m mostly doing live sound. And inflation plus exchange rate out here is a killer 💀
I’m thinking of getting the ATM230s for toms, it’s good to see they get some love here.

haven’t been able to justify a FET47ish mic in my setup […] And inflation plus exchange rate out here is a killer 💀 If "antipodes" and "out here" should be read as "Australia", you might consider one of BeesNeez' U47fet inspired mics. The Studio series is quite affordable, and the Elly or Oliver models (with/without transformer) might fit your budget. I don't have any experience with these specific mics, but if the U67 capsules I bought from BeesNeez are anything to go by, they could be quite decent.

One thing with the studio series on kick that I’m worried about is the lack of a pad switch. I think the Elly has a max SPL of 130db?

The AT 25 is a no nonsense, no hyped solid little mongrel both in sound and physically. I dropped it on my big toe from 3' 3 months ago and the nail is still purple. if it had hit the ground it would have dented the lino! Tonally they are more biased towards upper bass - our cajon player swears by it. Cheers, Ross
