Get good drums new Modern and Massive kit is great if you are after big in-tune drums. Just purchased Progressive and Rock foundry which I know you have. They are great. I have all the SSD stuff but they have fallen out of favour of the above mentioned.

I know...I keep thinking it CAN'T be as good as the Symphony...but I'm not finding that. Are you using it USB or Thunderbolt?

I still blame the Symphony. You should use the Motu...... But seriously, I have never noticed any real difference between the HP and Main outs. Other than the difference between listening though headphones and monitors. My guess would be that something is configured differently between the 2 outputs as they are independently configured. I don't find the Kemper setting menus instantly comprehensible but that is probably just the German nature of the product. Hope you can sort it out.

Man, I wish guitar demo guys (be it pedals, amps, whatever) would quit burying the tone in over the top, ping-pong delay verb. It's like they ALL do it! Not to slag the tones, I'm sure they're nice under all that FX wash. That is the tone. Most guitarist don't want to hear their tone without all those effects.....

Back to your corners, please. We are starting (starting?) to nerd out. Just ordered the 828es. Will compared to the Symphony and report back. Great, will wait to hear your feedback.

Order quickly and report back. I am trying to decide between this and the Clarett.

You are probably just hearing poor quality conversion on the Symphony.

I decided I need to return this Pro Ject. I already sent the email to Crutchfield. They have a 60 day return policy if you save the packaging and keep it in like new condition. I'm going to switch back to the Focusrite Clarett as my working DAC. Probably the Clarett OctoPre. It's only $50 more than this DAC as a B-stock. That will give me a respectable 26x28 I/O at 48K project rates. After thinking back on the past 3 days of listening it's just too mushy sounding. I need tight bass and firm highs. If I had to guess, I would say that it's underpowered. These DAC chips were designed for mobile phones. The thing that really did it for me was listening to my Arousor plugin. I couldn't clearly hear what the compressor was doing and that bothers me. I apologize for any hyperbole in this thread I just get really excited about interfaces and converters, it's my favorite type of studio gear. Other than microphones I guess. It was a really good learning experience even if I did suddenly decide to change directions and retreat to my standard tried and true option. What is your thoughts on the Clarett DAC compared to the others? Have you tried Motu?

I have to admit i didn't know about the 828es until last week. Does anyone know if it is 2 mic inputs + 8 line inputs or are the from mic pres paralleled with the rear line inputs?
The presonus looks interesting but i can't find it over here.

The 3 best C12’s other than the original I have heard are in order Tim’s Haun’s and Shannon Rhode’s. Save a little more and do it right you won’t be sorry! 100% agree do it right. Especially with the c12

After their own shootout, I wouldn't touch a Clarett range for any amount of money you paid me. They sounded terrible....IMO. Especially as you apply DSP to the signal. Both the MOTU 828 or 16A (budget) and RME UFX+ (expensive) options are hybrid. Thunderbolt2+USB2(or 3 for the RME)....they won't require different set up in your DAW....all templates and IO presets can remain the same--change the buffer and what cable you use....done. I mention because it's something you may not have considered, but an 828 is an 828 regardless of which jack you use to the DAW. So--no reconfigured other than changing the buffer, which you'd have to do for a different computer's capabilities anyway. If you have a completely separate "mobile USB" interface, you'll have to reconfigure your DAW everytime you switch back and forth. Cheers for your input. The new MOTU 828es looks like an interesting unit. I hadn't seen this before. It would be nice to have the same setup, in fact it would be great, however this would be a second setup so i don't have to dis-assemble my home setup everytime i do location.

I thought that the Maiku CK12 wasn't multi-chambered and that it used the K67 style backplates. If this is the case it wouldn't compete with a CT12 or other multi chambered recreations.
I maybe wrong, but that was my understanding.

The Clarett stuff is great. I have only had the Thunderbolt ones (almost all of them), but they are highly recommended from me. Saffire and Scarlett are pretty dern good too, but if you want the best sound quality it's got to be the Clarett. Unless you're a Mac user and can afford the RED and RedNet interfaces at the top of their line. Thanks for the feedback. I would only be interested in the clarett range. But as I understand it the USB drivers are the same for both devices. Do you have any experience with the Scarlett driver performance under Mac?

The 1248 interests me IO wise. But that is an extra $1000.00 over the clarett.

Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone has experience with the USB range of focusrite interfaces?
As I understand it the Clarett has the same driver performance as the Scarlett range. These interfaces appear to be a good solution for a mobile rig. Occasionally I find myself in situations where thunderbolt isn't readily available and I believe an USB interface might be the solution.
Does anyone have experience with how they perform in the real world?

I wanted to make an amendment to my long post above. I think I still prefer the Clarett DAC over anything I have. The Presonus DAC sounds a little bit unclean to me in the high end. I am getting really picky. It's not too far off from an Audient or a Tascam UH-7000 though. I am just trying to approach the highest possible option for my main speakers. However, I still prefer the Presonus ADC, I think it just sounds great. The front end and back end of these boxes are all a little different. Never did I really like the Apollo DAC, either. I just never used it. I am really picky about DAC sound. I was wondering why my last 3 songs sound so different than what I had recorded before. I think it comes down to the DAC. It's just not what I'm used to with the Quantum. Yeah I could spend time learning it but I think I'll just plug the Clarett back in or maybe go shopping for a Pro Ject next month. Getting the perfect sound coming out of the speakers has been a lifelong pursuit for me and it is a matter of inches. Thanks for your review, it gives me something to think about! Currently have a Apollo BF but I was looking at the Clarett for a mobile rig. The new presonus interfaces aren't available over here yet.

I just switched to Presonus Quantum. It's expandable up to 96x96 I/O with a maxiumum of four Quantums on one Thunderbolt daisy chain. You would make up extra channels with DP88 on ADAT or whatever your favored "octopre" type box is. I like the DP88. Quantum is only $1,000 each and DP88 is at $700. Each Quantum can support 8 channels of SMUX at 96K. OR 16 ADAT channels at 48K or lower (two DP88s per Quantum). I'm pretty sold on these things. Sound quality great and latency performance is class-leading, without venturing into PCIe cards and such. These look like an interesting development from Presonus. Presonus quaility worries me but maybe they are trying to make a return to their earlier days. I know S1 V4 looks very interesting to me. Did you come from a Clarett? If so what made you move and how do they compare sound and driver wise?

Its good to keep in mind that much of an interfaces value is in the software and drivers. I have had RME which has great stability, older apogee great sound with average drivers. I am now using an Apollo BF which has so many tracking advantages and great stability that it has stopped me looking for better conversion. Sure I will upgrade at some point but am content for now. Hope you find something that fits your situation!

They've clearly just got the model number wrong as they talk about the knob design and finish and the WA12 doesn't have Neve style knobs. People do make mistakes like this, I know I have in posts. Someone should email them and I'm sure they'll correct it. Check the link. It their review on the page selling the WA12. Its comical.

It's nonsense to think that apple will phase out thunderbolt in the near future they will just build it into there new cpu with some sort of license from Intel. It's not like Intel want their format to fail. There isn't any reason to think that the new mac pro won't have thunderbolt ether.
My guess is that Apple will begin by moving their macbook air (or what ever its called now) to the new CPU and from there work their way up the line. Who know how long it will take them to match the speeds of a high spec intel cpu.

How is this project coming along? I can't remember the last time I worked on it! I think I redid the crossover again, but haven't tried it. I'll have to pull it back up and take a look sometime soon. Sounds good. Love to hear how they turn out. I am currently working on a 3 way design as well.

Warm has an opamp in the metering section I believe the Stam does too. Both have non original power supplies. I do not know how much difference this makes electrically. This s inaccurate. The SA-2A has follows the original schematic on the power supply. Chris is probably referring to another manufacturer as we use the correct NOS 6AQ5 tube for compression. Using an opamp on the metering section has absolutely no bearing nor influence on the sound or performance of the unit, it is merely there to ensure the proper function of the VU meter. I think a product should speak for itself, there is no need to rant at others although I have done the same in the past, as a geek tech it is something we can't help sometimes. If we are going to point fingers at each others build we should also mention the positive things, the SA2A uses the finest transformers available in the world which are the very expensive Sowter transformers, there are far more important on the tone of a unit and approaching the original frequency response than a op amp on the VU meter which in fact has no bearing at all. There is a rea I stand corrected. I wasn't meaning to paint your gear in a negative light at all. In fact I would have brought your products if they had been around when i was DIYing all of my studio equipment. Much less hassle and great value for money. You were just about 5 years too late for me to jump on the band wagon.
