I am starting a new project and it’s time for a new set of cymbals. I have never bought into the pre-packaged cymbal sets because there will always be one or two cymbals that I will never use. I went to Guitar Center and I swear that something is wrong with their cymbals. They just sound bad. Is there a possibly that they sell the rejects of the cymbal companies to make a higher profit, or are the newer, cheaper ways of business manufacturing making cymbals sound worse. It’s not the room I was hitting them in. I then went to Sweetwater and every cymbal I played sounded really nice and well, sweet! HHX xplosion pack. 16c/18c/14hhstage hats/20”stage ride...I noticed that the HHX Explosions had a similar quality to the Evolutions, but a little darker, warmer, but you have to hit them harder to get that sound I’m looking for, if you hit them softer they just don’t get the same nice wash they get when you get into them. Evolutions sound the same no matter how hard you hit them. Now, I think I found a set I really like, however I need a mellow ride that I can ride, crash, with a soft ping. I currently have a 21” Paiste Dry Ride. It sounds great on everything(Rock,Country) but for this project, I need something a lot more relaxed, less pinging, and able to crash, with more complexity with the wash. But not sustaining too long. I tried my best to explain what I’m looking for. This project is a singer/songwriter Irish Folk/Acoustic project. I think I have been searching for a while on the change up in cymbals, but after demoing a bunch just never found anything I liked better than my older trusty Zildjian A’s and Customs. I do like the Sabian HHX and Evolutions. Zildjian K...pawn shopping it now, searching...

Have you tried Paiste Giant Beats? Excellent all-around cymbals, warm, nice wash and the ping isn't overbearing.

Zildjian K, A or A customs, sabian HH, AAX or HHX all day long. In that list you’ll find something to work with whatever song and space combo you’ve got I imagine.

Those are the go-to cymbals for just about everything. HH or K for darker sounds, A or HHX for middle tones, A Custom or AAX for modern bright. They're cheaper than boutique meinl, Istanbul, paiste, etc. You can find them everywhere in case you need a quick replacement, and you can find them cheap used.

I’m a sucker for the 15” Paiste 602 hats. I have a whole Giant Beat set and they are great as well. I’ve got the ride up in the classifieds for a decent price. No matter what I keep coming back to my 20” K Custom Dark ride. Can’t get away from that thing.
2nd most used Ride is a 22” A from the early 70’s. A little tape on it or maybe a moongel and the cymbal totally morphs and can be used in any situation.

Give me HH hats and A or A custom crashes and I’m generally a happy guy. Ride to taste/song. And my A custom EFX trash is super useful - you can get some really wonky cool sounds out of it with a stack like an old cracked splash or something.

Cymbals: A lifelong quest. The good ones are few and far between. Also, just as your own taste varies, so does the player, often the studio itself, and the band you record. A while back, I recorded a drummer, who made some of my most mellow cymbals sound harsh. Even with 7A sticks. Go figure.
That said, I've found Istanbul Agop to be very consistent in sounding good. Mind you, you still will need to go through a few to find the real gems, but not like with the other big ones. For what you describe, I'd check out the 30th. Anniversary cymbals they do.

These are SEXY! I want, want, want these. Is Benny Greb teenie tiny or is that bass player like the biggest dude ever? Those cymbals sure do sound sweet!

These are SEXY! I want, want, want these. Hmm. I never really liked unfinished cymbal tones. I find these to lack detail as well. But it could be the recording too. He speaks of the sizzle rivets in the ride, but I don't hear them in the recording at all while he's riding. The overheads are either ribbons, or rolled off too much.

I never found any relationship between brand and quality. One thing to be aware of is that boutique shops are notorious for offloading the bad ones they can't sell to Banjo Bazaar and the like. The same is true of guitars.

Zildjian Ks, Kerope or Paiste 602s vintage/classic sounds. Anything medium thin to thin.
2002 for harder styles. Giant Beats is good for rootsy stuff.

Wow, Benny Greb is an amazing artist. After he "groked" the SpongeBob kit he had a child-like joy while playing it and quickly grew into it, became one with the instrument in front of him and riffed from his soul. Wow. The bass player is huge.

The bass player is huge. Framing. Wideangle lenses have a tendency to accentuate the difference in sizes of object on the periphery of the lens to those in the center. They also compress the visual field a bit, so any objects closer to the lens seem much larger, but don't show the depth and distance between the objects as clearly. This can put things out of perspective like what we see here.

I went through this in the last couple months. I needed cymbals for the studio that were not harsh and overpowering. I went to every manufacturers site and listen and compared samples till I found the sound I was looking for. This is what I got: 14" K hihats 20" K Ride 17" K custom dark crash 16" K custom dark crash 10" k splash (just for fun)
The cymbals are well balanced and don't overpower the modest Pearl Export kit I have.
I also like 14" newbeats as well but opted for the K hihats.
