I have a D-251mic built by Dany and it sports a chinese capsule. I was comparing it against my Tim campbell c12 mic and it just does sit in the same league of smoothness of sound. so i was thinking of upgrading the capsule and looking at options. i see there is Maiku capsules in Switzerland. I know that Stam uses his capsules but i see that they are chinese capsules and then skinned and finished in Switzerland. they are the in between price of Chinese to boutique capsule manufacturer in pricing. Has anyone else ordered one of Maiku capsules ? any user reports? As an example , I was reading how one u67 clone maker had used both the HK-67 vs the Maiku capsule and could hear thedifference in low end and high end on each version so i pw there must be differences. is the final skinning/finishing process the most important part? I know of another botique mic manufacturer who also employs this chinese capsule and the skinning process himself so i am wondering if this is a good way to go or the next evolution in mic manufacturing. Just a side note. Can a mic be called made in USA if it has a chinese capsule reskinned like this method? your thoughts would be appreciated.

I thought that the Maiku CK12 wasn't multi-chambered and that it used the K67 style backplates. If this is the case it wouldn't compete with a CT12 or other multi chambered recreations.
I maybe wrong, but that was my understanding.

I was initially looking at 67 capsules and then thought about my d-251 and what to do with that. So i have not looked into the c12 capsule that he does. Good point, I think i remeber reading something about centre vs edge terminated and accurate c12 versions. Will have to get back to finding where this info was.

The 3 best C12’s other than the original I have heard are in order Tim’s Haun’s and Shannon Rhode’s. Save a little more and do it right you won’t be sorry!

Has any one tried the Mark Chierego OPR custom made C12 capsule? He is not too far from me but I dont see much feedback about his custom C12 capsules.

If you know him, can you invite him to join us here>? I would love to see a discussion on CK12 capsules between timcampbell Shannon and Mark Chierego (and others with something to offer)!

Ward, Mark is already a member here. Marvelous! So, can you get that thread going Tim? Maybe Johnkenn could set up a special thread? A discussion between you actual makers and then a Q&A? Please? Pretty please? Pretty pretty please? With a cherry on top?

Yeah But in the past Tim and others have been pretty open and enlightening about various aspects of the classic CK12 and their attempts to duplicate it with modern materials. For the most part it has been a very friendly competition. In fact one many could learn from. In the long run I think anyone who is involved in the buisness of quality microphones benefits from these discussions benefits because they show the importance of the capsule and the subtle differences in design and construction of the best attempts of recreating the historic capsule.

+1 for not sure this is a good idea. It is an unreasonable expectation to expect competitiors to come together in one place to disucss whatever questions/opinions that may get from users.

I think these guys admire each other.
Over 2+ (3) years ago I spoke with Mark about building a custom made mic (12/251) & was very impressed with his expertise & knowledge and point to point construction of the mic. And what a nice guy! At that time he was doing everything but the capsule. I asked what capsule he'd recommend & that I didn't want to cut any corners. His recommendation was the CT-12. But the waiting period was about a year & it was a time that, I think, Tim was being bombarded with orders from around the world & the demand must have been overwhelming for his great custom-made capsule. The other alternatives we'd talked about were Haun & Josephson - but neither sold to individuals. So I never had the mic made but eventually did order 2 capsules from Tim & had 1 put on a 414EB I had with the nylon capsule.

I hope you're still happy with your capsules aremos. I know that my waiting times have been long. These days they're pretty short by comparison.

I have a Tim Capsule I should put soon in a 251 DIY mic. Very impatient ! I talked to Mark over email a few times, and his capsules seem top notch. He sounded very knowledgeable, and from reading his posts on GS and GDIY, he does not cut corners, and knows how to listen. I thought if I ever build a C12 pair, I would get a capsules pair from him. We don't have much feedback yet because his capsule has been the market since november or december 2017. So this is to follow...
