Ok guys, as requested here are some pics of what I discovered in side this Weird 47 "mod 2". The glaring issues (aside from the fact that it's just an Alctron) are the insanely shitty solder joints on the capsule wiring, and the duct tape. I can't seem to attach files, it says the forum has exceeded it's attachment limit. Here's an imgur album: imgur.com/a/inEVyJbFrankly our email exchange has some gems in it too. At one point he sent me an insanely long (1365 word) email going off about a bunch of his problems, basically how much the world was against him and none of it was his fault....sad really. Ironic how he had the time to type that super long email, but go completely silent when the mic was DOA and I was hoping to just return it to him. Because of his communication blackout, I had to request a paypal refund-- which they did because he also did not respond to their communications. Anyways, I appreciate all the suggestions for better options from you guys. My tech who is familiar with the Alctron circuit is going to help me build something nice using this Alctron body and PSU, probably with a Theirsch capsule. no photos attached?

I have a fair amount of envy when i see the pro audio market esp the US. Its so hard to acquire and move stuff on in a small place like new zealand so you have to be very selective about what you buy.

I hate to do this, but did anyone check out the Antelope Galaxy 32? They have a 64 option as well!!! Eric Valentine just went this route. This converter looks sweet! All the I/O you could ever need or want, and a monitor controller for it! This would really fit into my workflow perfect with my outboard. Unfortunately there isn’t a headphone jack on this interface!!!! You have to get the Galaxy 64 to get the one headphone jack, then that’s a huge price jump The problem with Antelope is drivers and manufacturers support suck. Only posting this as i have been quite critical of them in the past. (and i still don't like the EOL status of interfaces about six months after their release.) I use one as for DSP and converters via ADAT into an RME HDSPe. About 1 year ago I had a hardware issue with the thunderbolt port and customer support was very good. Multiple sessions with customer service and an engineer (the interface was way out of warranty). They must have put more focus on customer service it in recent years. Also i have not had any drivers issues in relation to controlling the software mixer/dsp. (i go straight out to adat though). My 2 cents. Back to the BLA Apollos which are more reliable overall!

Yeah, I mentioned that it's about 1ft per millisecond already. I still find it interesting that some can say that 1ms is hard for them but then say that they can only use real amps because there is no latency, but the math would say that they routinely hear 5-10ms of latency in a room.. It does depend on what you're playing IME. Vocals have to be the worst for me because it's instantly resonating in my skull vs. the RT from all the devices back to the headphones. Drums are a clear second because you're never going to be 5 meters away from a kit and the snap vs. replay doesn't align, guitars? Hmm, acoustic is worse than distorted electric because on a lot of metal tracks it's not always easy to pick out what they're doing at the best of times on a finished product. Might as well be 50ms latency LOL..
It does depend for me on the level of interaction and in room response, for example a violin is going to be right up next to you so even a minimal delay is going to put me off. Although as to my previous point you can learn to adapt to an extent.
This is pretty much it. I think that drums in a orientational thing. If you play a lot of acoustic drums and jump on an electric kit it might throw you off as the sound comes from a different direction ie your headphones. So even at a very low latency you still hear it differently

Other than the Luna integration. The primary benefit of Apollo is you can mirror the plugins on your recording chain with the plugins in your daw. Otherwise it does what most other interfaces with DSP do, maybe you could argue it does it more elegantly and the DSP plugins are higher quality. (although Antelope and Apogee have good dsp plugins.)
Also only UA and Antelope have Autotune on their DSP as far as I know.
I loved my apollo setup until I wanted to record synths. That was before luna and the release of their new synths. Great all in one studio setup though. I can understand why they are so popular.
Whatever helps capture the vibe the best imo.

What are the datapoints that make ya’ll skittish about Apogee? Owning them...and there passed record. Love the sound though. Few issues with the current desktop drivers, it was half baked on release. Support and drivers for all thunderbolt interfaces have been dumped as well as symphony mk1. Their firewire driver was never particularly good and they stopped updating them very early. Part of their problem is relying on the core audio driver and out sourcing the driver development. Yes, they are a small company but I don't believe they value drivers enough. But they are still better than antelope audio.

The Apollo and MOTU chat got me into the site. Funny I’d take the Apollo Inputs and the MOTU Outputs. Apollo output is middy and super flattering to guitar and vocal layers. You will undermix and bury them unless they’re loud! But it’s not lofi and has some detail. I don’t like the pres but they’re better than garbage like Scarlets and Behringer. Anything that goes through a MOTU input is warmed over. Doubly so if you use the pres. It loses detail. I don’t like the pres. They really lose detail and get warmer. The outputs are normal tonally but lack fine detail but have some detail. My Apogee Symphony Desktop kills both of them and the pres are much better unless you crank them up. They can’t really take that last 10 db of gain they have while a Grace or Millenia sounds fine pushed to the limit but get a tone thats still cleaner than color pres which are still cool or warmer on guitars until they’re not. The Dakings stay cleanish but get overdriven. The Apogee just gets noisy and sounds overdriven a bit. The Symphonies’ inputs and outputs kill the Quartet’s and the Elements’. They’re just noticeably better but the Element and Quartet wrecked RME and Presonus. Some of the RMEs have less noisy gain even in high gain mode but RME sounds like shit except for a few products like the ADI-2 Pro (it’s not great but it doesn’t totally suck) and the Micstasy (same). Tascam stuff sounds better in the real world to be honest than most RME. RME sounds like prosumer circuits where they removed everything that sounded cool and only left what sounded bad Dan Perfect solution except it's made by apogee and will be discontinued in 2 years time. And has pretty average drivers. If it weren't for those two things I would definitely have one. As it is, I'm currently using RME PCI card with antelope audio conversion. I would love to have just a small high quality usb interface like the symphony desktop but can't trust appogee on the driver front. The Hilo looks like a pretty cool device. I've never gotten the chance to try one. Maybe one of these days. Good luck! John

Well, each to their own. I used my MOTU 1248 as an output monitoring station for the Apollo cause I just couldn't.. Personally if I was in that situation I'd ditch the entire lot and get the latest 828 motu.com/en-us/products/828/. Even if you decide to flip it supports practically everything, has absolutely stellar A/D and sound, tons of I/O and if everyone who keeps barking on about Cubase is right mix the two and you're golden for good. Although you never know the MAC driver they've made might play ball with Pro Tools..
See, I thought the Carbon was a little congested in the middle range. But the stereo/center image was great. I would imagine it would have been great dialed in with the trinnov to my room. But alas. Star crossed lovers. I had an 828es. I think this is the successor? Thought it sounded really good…but that routing matrix. My goodness. The new 828 is USB only and doesn't use the same driver. Its not browser based and no routing matrix. (Not an endorsement i haven't used one.)

Cubase Pro 13 delay compensation is rock solid. 100% spot on. But for all tracking and over dubbing I use an analog monitoring mixer for true ZERO latency tracking Sorry, should have explained more. As you know I've got an SSL Big Six, it's not "true" zero latency tracking as your converters need to output the audio and you still have to record it (hence an RT). The benefit to this approach is you're only listening to the output latency so you'll get closer but it doesn't mean it would match like in HDX unless you have an interface that can do sub ms round trip. When you add plugins into this situation it will just exascerbate the issue and overdubs are still not exactly possible unless you start bypassing, I'm sure someone will say well it's not much so I can compensate. However I'll paraphrase the SOS review, it's not noticeable because you get used to it but it doesn't mean it isn't there.
Look, I'm not an Avid defender. I think the price of any HDX solution is extortionate, also it's not impossible to build a tool to convert C++ to Assembly, C or whatever language you prefer (multiple engines do this) so if someone had the expertise they could create an easy way to convert plugs to DSP then undermine Avid. To create the interface etc. would be a task and to standardise it would take a lot of effort but again it's not impossible.
What I'm saying is it's like recording from analog to tape, the amount of latency across the board is imperceptible and it's something you understand once you've tried it. Whether this should be the case anyway, well that's another question. I'm not the only one saying it though, again the SOS review.
Hi Shadow, I don't understand how the DAW doesn't compensate for overdubs?? Most interfaces have sub 1ms "direct" monitoring but that doesn't have anything to do with the sample alignment of the DAW. That should be spot on everytime shouldn't it?? For many years I have trusted that my DAW will compensate for all latency if my interface is reporting correctly. I'm only looking at this from a cubase perspective I haven't used pro tools in years. The only issue I've had was with Apollo not reporting adc bus latency. But RME is 100%. Interested to know if I'm missing something?

Monitoring plugins are pretty cool. I could see myself putting Sonarworks on the interface output instead of the session.
The single channel will make a lot of sense for a singer songwriter. The software looks polished. Interested to see how the drivers perform.
Once you get to the top model it might make sense to be buying separate interface and pre unless the converters on this thing a pretty good.

Tempting... I already have the tone king plus some of their other metal amps.
The thing i like about NeuralDSP is you can't really make them sound bad per se. Very good for just pulling up and jamming or recording. With Helix/Axefx or most other hardware/software i spend way to much time tweaking. (Kemper was similar but they was probably due to the profiled nature.)

Interesting video regarding the m series efficiency cores and how each DAW handles them.
Some people may be better hanging onto their old m1 macs.

That slip tool will be a game changer for editing on logic if it is implemented like cubase or studio one. Hopefully you can see the grid though the regions as well. It's high time for some developer to INCLUDE a plugin that 'snaps to grid' or 'auto aligns'. It seems to be that Apple - Logic would dictate that kind of move. Isn't that how every pop hit is made now..... actually Cubase does have a auto-align plugin rip off since version 10.

Yah know the amount of times I use the pres on my Discrete 8 which sits directly above my Neve & JLM pres....... more often than I should.... For vocals my 'always setup' setup is U47(ef12 clone) -> 1072 -> 1176. The rest is lucky dip.
The most important part is the performance so just don't keep anything around that sounds bad. Antelope pres are pretty good, drivers not so much.

Many reasons why you might want your system drive to be larger, esp when the base model is 256gb Pick your poison, I suppose. I just can’t imagine too many people undertaking this whacky mod. Not during warranty period anyway. I'm sure some repair shops will offer it.

Sorry to move this back on topic... but I have a related question: (good natured side chuckle) Q. Which kind of circuit naturally provides the best protection against spikes/surges? 10amp, 15amp, 20amp? Any other thoughts? Thinking that in addition to surge/spike/conditioning power supplies the best type of circuit to provide additional protection can't be a bad thing. Amperage of a circuit doesn't protect against surges or spikes. Only protects against volt drop. (well the cable size actually) Having been an electrical contractor in NZ I find it very interesting listening into the discussions on US domestic power setups. We are highly regulated, we have to run separate circuits for lights and power, no more than 12 outlets per circuit (240v here) (kitchens/laundry only 3), 2 light circuits minimum incase one trips you still have some lights in your house. AC & water cylinder on separate breakers. 3 circuits per RCD. on and on..... Good luck with your build. Don't let lights near the power circuits for your studio (new led's are terrible for noise).

The music genre is Sting/Peter Gabriel/ Crowded House/Beatles/Genesis kind of vibe. I'd like to do this at 32 samples 96KHz but even a 13900K or M2 Ultra will fall over. I detest any forms of latency and the absolute minimum possible. My studio philosophy has always been do it once - do it right. It's way cheaper in the long run ime. Oh stuff like Kontakt, right.. Your philosophy is commendable but simply throwing money at something doesn't always equate to the best results without understanding why. For example my workstation (for work of course) has an AMD Epyc processor, in benchmarks it's nearly twice as fast as an M2 Ultra. However for music production the M2 or I5 is a way better CPU..
Why? Single core performance. It depends on the DAW & the plugin to be fair, some DAW's thread per channel (meaning one strip = 1 core) and I have noticed that Kontakt for example will multithread voices but for the most part it still seems single core heavy (which is an issue). Due to this it's sometimes better to have more raw grunt than parallel processing power, on paper the I5 13600 is a fraction quicker than the M2 in single core performance but that means if you tank the I5, you'd also tank the M2 (you'd definitely tank the Epyc). So, tell me why you'd go for one over the other? My point is, you could throw thousands more at this and get nothing more for your money.
UA plugs introduces latency because there's an RTL (round trip latency) involved in external DSP processing even if it's Thunderbolt, if I remember correctly there's a counter in the UA app that shows you the additional. If latency is an issue than you might want to consider going completely native as well. Personally I just use a short cut key in pro tools to disable all plugs when I do overdubs and I'm desk / HW based for the most part anyway so in my situation it doesn't matter too much. That again depends on your setup..
Look, end of the day this is just some friendly advice. Something to ponder over, when it comes to audio I wouldn't consider myself any more than a general hobbyist nowadays but when it comes to tech that's my bread & butter. I might one day spare someone enough dosh to go and also buy a nice compressor they don't need ..
P.S don't underestimate the importance of audio interface driver efficiency when it comes to latency, pops, crackles etc.
This 100%

I have done several videos on the ML-1. I've been super impressed by it and I do agree that the Blackbird expansion is the one to get. The latest 87 pack is also nice. Honestly it's very close to the originals, maybe even so close that it rivals high-end clones. Great voice. are you the same crille from sneap?
