I'd like to add one or two LA-2A type compressors to my rack at some point but I haven't heard the clones in person. Wondering what experiences folks here have had. Do any of them come close to the original or do they fall so short as to not really be worth the investment?

Did not build them, but I’ve used the drip version at one place and thought it was excellent. |

He’s really responsive and backs up his work. |

I have a dual LA2a built to the highest specs by Dan Deurloo. It's excellent. I also look forward to hearing what Klark is doing with their new 2a. Their EQP turned out great. Interested to hear their 2a. I also would second the Audio-Scapes 2a although I have not heard it. Their GSSL is excellent.

I visited the Audioscape site and noticed that the 76A has an internal 120/220 power, supply but the opto and buss compressors do not. I wonder if he would offer us here in Europe a chance to use his boxes also without having to use a step up transformer (which probably and most effectively takes it off the table)? I'll have to ask though I'm sure it has come up before. It looks as if these are high quality boxes of pleasure for good money.

The Stam might have worked out fine but I like the idea of having the high frequency knob on the front panel. Also, I'm pretty sure that up until yesterday, the Stam website said the next batch was to be built in Jan 2018. That gave me the impression that the batch was being built late and may not be ready for delivery any time soon. It looks like that's been updated now but, even if that wasn't the case, I think in the end I'd still have gone with the Audio-Scape. |

This’is the time to buy 1176 or LA-2 clones with STAM, Audio note Warm & even the KT stuff their are a lot of guys looking at their racks and crying over how much they spent 4 years ago or more!

Very true. The Audio-Scape I ordered is less than 1/3 the price of the UA version and 1176 clones can be had for less than half the cost of the UA version. If I like the Opto, I'll want a second channel before anything else but I can also see myself adding an 1176 clone after that. Good thing I have a big rack. |

On the Audio-Scape website, he criticizes another manufacturer doing a 2U version of the LA-2A, saying corners are being cut. Could it be Stam ? I'm asking out of curiosity, not to bash one or another, I have a Stam SA-2A that I love btw. Just technical curiosity (walking on eggs, here...)

I don't really see a reason for a 3RU LA2a. I've got a custom dual (2 mono / 1 stereo) LA2a in 3RU, and there were zero compromises made.

Slightly off the beaten path, but back when LA-2A clones were a rarity, Regular John Recording (RJR) was offering point-to-point hand wired LA2As using the 1968 schematics, NOS tubes, and trannies.
I decided to try my luck and order one from Dustin (the owner), a few years ago. I'll admit- I bought this on a whim of fetishism. I'm no seasoned professional, and with a lot of higher end gear- I can't readily hear the difference. But I'd heard and read so much, I wanted to try it out.
They hype is real! I was a convert as soon as I wired the comp into my patchbay. Even with no compression engaged, RJR's LA2A takes anything coming into it and outputs gold dust on the edges.
The price for RJRs gear will probably run quite a few hundred north of the current clone offerings, but this is a truly boutique shop. RJR is literally one guy (Dustin) who builds individual units, and you can customize nearly everything including the faceplate, electronics, etc.. He is a really nice person, to boot, and is fastidious about being in contact, meeting deadlines, and upholding quality. He shoots straight and holds your hand.
My experience was so good that I ended up buying his Buss Compressor, which is an SSL Clone. I use both pieces daily in my production.
