I like my Warm WA2A a lot but I don't have a real LA2A to compare. I think it compares very well to the ADL 1000 or plugins. In youtube comparisons with the Stam I thought the Stam sounded brighter but not necessarily better. Just different. I am very curious about the Audio Scape LA2A though. The video comparison was done with a custom SA2A made for Greg Wells which has a modified value on a capacitor which made it brighter. The standard SA2A is neither brighter nor darker. Pretty much the same as the Teletronix. Particularly the MK2 with Sowter transformers and Sole Fast output cap

Wouldn't mind trying a SA2A out at some point.

I had @vincent R. and another friend over last night and we spent a little time testing the Audio-Scape Opto. Vin was sent home with some audio to post here but it may have been lost (not his fault). In the end we all agreed the Opto is a good unit. We compared it to the UAD LA-2A and it's very close. Since we did the comparison on Vin's files, I'll let him speak to what he heard first. I'm going to grab another as soon as I see one is in stock. I'm also thinking about grabbing their 1176 clone. Does anyone here have any experience with that unit? Edit: Clearly I don't know how to tag someone on this board. Can someone explain that to me?

I had a Acme opticom mk2 for a couple years. Super great compressor with three speed optical cells to pick from. Ultimately, I found it too agressive for the levels I like to get in the mix, Otherwise, totally a great box. If I could have raised the limiting point a few dB, I would have kept it.

For some reason the session didn’t get loaded to my thumb drive. Once I have a little time to listen to it in my room I’ll post some thoughts. jtc111 and I are working on this. I will say the color of the unit sounded a lot like the UAD LA2A we were using. It didn’t brighten things up like the Warm Audio clips I’ve heard. Once we find the files I’ll post something. PS: To tag someone go into the advanced reply and hit the @ button in the top menu bar. Then start typing the screen name. It will come up. Just select who you want to tag and it’s done.

Pro Replicas do a handmade point to point wired clone that sounds very good on their promo videos.

I hesitated to post about this one as I think it is pricier, isn't it ? But Proreplicas is the bomb.

Ultimately I like the sound of the Audio-Scape Opto compressor, but I'd need a little more time with it to really get the feel for it. This was done relatively quickly. The high frequency control is a really cool touch too. We ran a quick take for something I recorded for my YouTube Channel. The original recording was done with my U87ai into my Apollo stock preamp. I did not match the settings on the Opto and the UAD LA2A Gray. Instead I matched the gain reduction. At my loudest we showed 10 db of gain reduction. We wanted to really push it to hear what it was doing. I think the UAD is a little darker sounding. I've included the unprocessed vocal as well. www.dropbox.com/sh/1prpv39ft7453bq/AAAZ0ScA1pUkZ9jls625E0rPa?dl=0

Now that I'm listening through headphones rather than off to one side of the monitors, I'm liking the Opto even more than I did last night. Compared to the Opto, the UAD version sounds a bit mushed in the mids. The Opto sounds like it has a bit more clarity there.

I have a Retro STA Level that point to point hand wired and I'm interested in the Pro Replicas LA2A or maybe a second hand UA Re-issue. I know the point to point hand wired thing is debatable (till the cows come home) but I've used the CL1B and CL1A many times and the point to point wired CL1A just sounds so much warmer and fatter to my ears. I can never find a CL1A second hand! That said my Millennia STT-1 is on a giant PCB board and sounds great so maybe I'm just being snobby about the P to P thing :-)

It's definitely a piece I'd want to borrow and get to know a little bit. We barely scratched the surface. We also didn't really spend anytime with the built in compressor.

Unfortunately I'm in the UK and the import duty and insured shipping would be prohibitive. Thank you for the link though.
