I've only had my SA-2A racked up for about a week, and definitely haven't had time to run signal into it yet, but my understanding is that it, too, has the HF-emphasis pot, but it is located on the inside of the unit, so rather useless in terms of changing it on the fly. I was actually planning to go the Audioscape route myself a few months back, but then Chris sold out of them. In between him selling out and completing new builds, I ran across a virtually new SA-2A for $750. I couldn't pass it up. It does have a stereo link option on the back, FWIW. In every audio example I've heard of the Warm and/or the Stam, I've preferred the Stam. Not very many audio examples of the Audioscape out there, but Chris seems like a badass, and awesome to work with. I'm hoping to get one of his SSL bus-style comps sooner or later. I agree with you about the Stam vs the Warm. I always think the Warm stuff sounds good, but it always seems to lack a certain "something" when compared to other models. Admittedly I owned and really liked their WA12 for a while.
Thanks for the heads up on the Stereo Link on the Stam. It's too bad they put the High Frequency control on the inside.

Yeah, I really wish the HF knob were on the outside front. It really makes an LA-2A quite a bit more versatile. I've wondered how hard it would be to have it modded, but that would kind of negate the cost savings I'd achieved. Heh.

Drill hole, some wire at worst a new pot, should not be that bad, but would ruin the resale value and confuse the hell out of most because an LA2 should only have 2 knobs right?

I've never known anyone who actively adjusted an LA2A's HF emphasis pot in modern recording. Typically, if someone says their LA2A sounds "off", I tell them to check that as someone may have messed with the pot. Not that it's bad to experiment, I've just not known anyone who found it helpful in a musical context on an LA2A. When I make LA2As, I include it because it's part of the original circuit, but use a locking pot to keep it from being accidentally adjusted.

I twist it on everything and it definitely changes how the comp reacts. Ok - mostly I leave it at about 9 o’’clock, but if I wanted it to grab more it’s a twist away.

I think you are talking about two separate things. The audioscape has a side chain filter. Bowie is talking about the overall hi frequency adjustment in the variable capacitor, or the original.

Audio-Scape's is a hi frequency adjuster, like the original. It is not a side chain. At least not per their website.

Read it again😎 What the website says: This potentiometer was factory set for recording as “flat” side-chain response (clockwise). Increasing the resistance of this potentiometer by turning it counter clockwise will result in compression which is increasingly more sensitive to the higher frequencies. It filters out low frequencies to the T4B module so it compresses the lows less and changes the 'focus' of the compression.
So it's side-chain and it sounds like he's saying it's true to the original but I don't know enough about the original to know if that's accurate.

I am about to launch into my AnalogVibes LA2A p2p build. My understanding of the original is that it had an adjustment but it changed the hi frequency response of the whole unit even with no compression. I maybe wrong, since I have not actually built it yet. Just doing all my reading. 😎

I was curious to see what it says in the Teletronix LA-2A manual. Here it is...
Side-Chain Pre-Emphasis (R37) The LA-2A was designed for use in broadcast applications. The audio signal in FM broadcasting undergoes pre-emphasis and results in a 17 dB boost at 15 KHz. Due to this increase in signal level, transmitters are subject to over-modulation. The LA-2A provides a control (R37) which controls the amount of high-frequency compression. This potentiometer is factory set for a “flat” side-chain response (clockwise). Increasing the resistance of this potentiometer by turning it counter clockwise will result in
compression which is increasingly more sensitive to the higher frequencies.
So it does sound like the Audio-Scape Opto high frequency control knob is true to the original (unless UA has changed the function of that control since the original).

Good to know. I am still curious if bowie was talking about C8.

I dunno.... back when I worked for FM Productions (Bill Graham) we had an original Teletronix that had an extra knob on the front...

I think Eric was being facetious.
