I noticed on Sweetwater that Pulse has put a nice price drop on the model EQH2. It is now only a few hundred dollars difference between that and the Tube Tech PE1C.
On the other hand, the used market has ample Tube Techs and not many Pulses.
Does anyone have experience in working with both units that you could share? Does the limitation on EQH2 make it all that inferior to the Tube Tech's full features? How wide is the gap between the two models sound-wise?
I am contemplating a pair for tracking and mix bus. Mostly working instrumental retro tunes.
Thanks!

drumrec that is awesome. are there any plans/specs you could share? my current is a solid-core door on two z-stands. the racks narrowly fit between them so they are down below. would love to get them up top like this.

anyone used the new George Way snares? I heard a lot about the old ones and new ones look cool.

yes, reason I ask which mixer you are looking at is because I went down this rabbit hole some years ago. started with a small ramsa, then a big ass soundcraft, then x-desk with 12 slots of 500 series eq/compression. It was a dream boat but damn it was expensive so after some testing I let go of most of the spendy 500 series in exchange for a few sleeper rack units. Now the only 500 series I have are the Neve 542s, 2 Moog Delays and 2 API Eqs. I do have two empty slots though. Probably grab some dbx 560s and call it. I couldn't find a small mixer that would do more good than bad for under 2k. other than a used x-desk. I gotta tell ya, I love using this mixer and it sounds fantastic.
I am excited to see if and when Harrison makes their button-for-button fader controller for Mixbus. That could be a fun alternative to my current situation.

I am using the X-Desk along with a bunch of stuff. Not using le box for anything but the mix down and occasionally some stems. Tracking and mixing my own productions and picking up random mix clients along the way. I'm using the Alesis HD24 for my tracking so the computer stays off until I'm ready to record the mix. Still learning a lot as I go of course. Tons of fun though. My day job is computer orientated so I worked hard to remove the mouse from my music world.
Which small board are you thinking of?

I have everything zip tied off, you are a brave dude.
yes the jacks wiggle. I thought I could tighten a nut in there but haven't unracked it to pop the top.
I have never used sidechain before. Can someone kindly explain how this units sidechain is supposed to function? would be very appreciated.

Any issue with the lack of steps and marking ? there are small markings. no issues for me. recall it like reading a clock and keep it moving. a stepped version would be killer though.

I had a pair of 500 series. I did find them to be very effective. I thought the price was quite low considering the competition but when I got them I remember feeling like they were of semi-cheap build. No casing, light as a feather, sorta flimsy and one of my unit's bottom knobs would not stay on no matter what I did. I'm not saying they are cheap or weak. Just that side by side with something more expensive its obvious where the money is going. Super effective eq's though and also unique/fun design. Someday I'd like to have another pair.

I just heard a 22" Kerope at Sam Ash and it was beautiful. $400 though as I was supposed to be valentine/anniversary shopping. Ouch! Definitely next on my list.

2 cymbals that made recording drums much more pleasant for me were the Custom Dark Crash 18" and a K Constantinople Ride in 20". I had bought numerous cheap things prior to that. All mistakes.
Another element that made recording drums much less arduous was the Coles 4038 mic.

running vocals through the 1176/la2a combo. mind blown. Which 1176 do you have? What is your combination? I have both the hardware UA 1176/LA2A and I have never had the mind blown experience others seem to have. I've tried the 1176 first. Then second. With all kinds of gain reduction combinations between the two units and I usually just take the 1176 off. So, I'm curious about what type of vocal style (pop/folk/metal/punk?) the combination works on for you and how you use the combination of the two . Hope you don't mind me asking..... Sure. I have the warm 76 and 2a. I use the 1176 first with maybe 3-5 db reduction happening for the highest peaks. Then the 2a is doing whatever sounds best in the mix. The needle is usually moving a fair amount and it sounds like butter. Most the work I get is from folks who are tracking at home. The difference between their raw takes and this combination is night and day. I find it most effective on busier/louder performances like hip-hop. For music that is slow and sung rather than spoken or yelled I would probably start with 2a alone like you.

I had the 7802 and the ssl comp a few years back. They sounded good and were built solid. I ended up selling the 7802 when the warm la2a was announced and sold the ssl because I was tracking more than mixing at the time.

I have a Clariphonic en route. Wondering if I should add another element to handle low end duties. One problem is I am down to 1RU left on my 4 racks. No room or plans/funds to start another rack. What's good on the bass end, stereo and 1RU? Tall order! A Bigger rack? Or 4😎 haha you are quite the enabler unfortunately I am truly maxed out.
the Clariphonic is sounding good. I used it on 3 mixes so far and its magic touch is greatly apparent. I had a client in the room and bypassed it during playback and she shouted 'what just happened?!?!' Then switched it back in and all was well again. Interesting how dull the mix sounds without even though just a few weeks back I didn't hear it as being like that. I am mixing through it so that I'm not cranking on individual tracks as much if at all. So far so good.

What's good on the bass end, stereo and 1RU? Tall order! I think you might be happy with a Manley Mini-Massive for this. I am. Not hard to find a good used one for around $1500. Yup that's the one on my radar. Time for John story time: In my late teens I was in a band that started to play shows. One of the members was in several bands and already had a rehearsal space set in Chino. It was a huge space built in the backyard of a house. Super nice with plenty of room for a band, their girlfriends, couches, pool table, dj setup etc... after a few months practicing there I met the owner, Ms. Manley herself. I was 19 and knew nothing about gear so I didn't think much other than she is an awesome person. The place was always referred to as "the dojo." It was a great time! I remember my friend telling me she owns a company that makes really expensive speakers haha.

received mine earlier this week. so far mixed one piece through it and added it to something I thought was finished. great results. not sure if I would want much more options than what's happening with it. my thought is I can set it and forget it as far mix bus goes. only adjusting to keep the GR minimal.
printing drums is another story though.
what are some of the flexible options I am missing? genuinely curious here. thanks.

I talked to the man himself at Namm today. The preamp is going to be around 1k and the eq will be 550. BUT... he said the eq will only work with the preamp and not independently. They do look and feel great.

got lucky and scored a great local deal on a stam sa4000. no $100 month long shipping I was actually on the pre-order/deposit list but pulled out last year because I needed the funding elsewhere. gonna patch to the master insert on my x-desk. very excited!

Looks like they will show their 500 Series preamp and eq at NAMM with the compressor soon to follow. I know the compressor is well liked but can anyone speak to the preamp's character? Thanks.
