They're not as fashionable as they once were but I've been loving the Millennia NSEQ (transformerless tube EQ) for a number of years now. One of the few EQs I've used where I don't feel that the integrity of the source is being harmed (no smearing, grit, loss of dynamics or detail). Very transparent. There are better EQs for character, but I haven't personally used any hardware that was so well behaved across the spectrum. Nor have I used any plugins that felt as focused and (for lack of better words) "musical". One of the few pieces of gear that I've never considered selling, ever.

If the way my tracks sound after tracking with the Warm EQP-1A is an indication, I'd like to try two EQP-1A's as the final mix EQ.
When I had my analogue studio, there was almost never any need for EQ. The board gave you what you needed and the outboard for the final mix was mainly a little DBX compression, and occasionally an Aphex Aural Exciter.
If memory serves, I had a graphic equalizer in the chain, but it was set up to balance the room, not for tone changing of any kind.

I have a pair of the old Altec/Langevin 7 band passive graphics. Only 6 dB cut and boost and something like 12 dB insertion loss that needs to be made up with a clean preamp following the EQ, but they don't sound like there's an EQ in the chain.

I use a GML 8200.
All I can say is, compared to plugin EQ's, it is like comparing a sharp knife to a butter knife. I find plugin EQ's flat and dull.

Retro 2A3 and Clariphonic on the mixbus

There are 2-buss classics like the Pultec and Sontec. I have the Hendyamps Michelangelo, which can make things really big and fat. It's a character piece, but you can switch the impedance for a cleaner sound. The Aggression knob is pretty sweet to dial in tube saturation It's full of tubes and transformers. The transformers in this thing are huge! It's got a power transformer that can run a fender deluxe, a choke powerful enough to run a Marshall JCM 800, and four Jensen audio transformers that sound stunning!

I've been using either my pair Avedis e27s or the line in on my pair of Retro Powerstrips to take advantage of the EQ section.

I have a DIY sontec I use sometimes and I use the Great RIver Mastering eq. The GR is fantastic.
I have a pair of pultecs I have tried on the buss but they never really work for me in that application.

They work well on the low end, for aligning it. That old PULTEC trick of cutting and boosting the same low-end frequency by the same amount. It works.

Retro 2A3 and Clariphonic on the mixbus How do you get on with the Clariphonic - is it strange to set up?

I use an SPL Passeq and a Summit EQP-200. For the 2-buss, I generally like soft curves when mixing.

Funny, I've found the low end on the EQP-1A is gorgeous, but I don't use the high end much. It really sounds just fine, but the magic seems to happen in the low end on it. I don't have very much Pultec experience, so there may be some ways of using it I'm missing.

Retro 2A3 and Clariphonic on the mixbus How do you get on with the Clariphonic - is it strange to set up? My only gripe with the Clariphonic is that it's not stepped. Huge PITA for me when trying to do recalls. I borrowed one for a while and loved it but never purchased one because of this.

RTZ 1549's and also Clariphonic as needed. The RTZ are stepped, so they get the go to status. I mostly use the Clariphonic for perc buss and things like mandolins and other acoustic instruments. If I tracked it, I usually don't have to reach for anything as I get it on the way in, but I mix a lot of things I didn't track, too, and it comes in handy when you need that certain glossy thing it does so well.

I sometimes use if needed a pair of Inward connections Vac Rac 4000 eq's on the stereo mix.
The best i have heard in the past was an old 70's ITI 230 eq but i would never buy one these days.. just too old..

Purple LilPEQR, Kush Electra, Analog Allstars EQP-1S5, Baxandall eq on the Overstayer SVC. All pretty useful during tracking and/or on the main bus or other stereo busses during mixing.

Retro 2A3 and Clariphonic on the mixbus How do you get on with the Clariphonic - is it strange to set up? No, I set it by ear. And then I dial it back because it's so easy to overdo it. But that's mainly because the top end is so smooth, no harshness at all. You hear it when you come back to the mix the next day

I never cut it by the same amount, though, gotta try it.

I have a Clariphonic en route. Wondering if I should add another element to handle low end duties. One problem is I am down to 1RU left on my 4 racks. No room or plans/funds to start another rack. What's good on the bass end, stereo and 1RU? Tall order!

The Electra isn't crazy money and I like lush gear. Have you owned one or just used one ? Viby with character or more transparent ? I saw an API 5500 for under 2 grand:good value or ?
