I use the Elysia MusEQ. Love the plug...would imagine the outboard is just killer.

Purple LilPEQR, Kush Electra, Analog Allstars EQP-1S5, Baxandall eq on the Overstayer SVC. All pretty useful during tracking and/or on the main bus or other stereo busses during mixing. The Electra isn't crazy money and I like lush gear. Have you owned one or just used one ? Viby with character or more transparent ? I saw an API 5500 for under 2 grand:good value or ? I own a pair. They're great. I tend to use them on kick and snare during tracking and then on the drum bus during mixing. They're relatively transparent but still have a vibe to them. I like them because, unlike a lot of eqs, it's hard to make them sound bad and the different topologies and overlapping frequency ranges make it super useful for sculpting and even correcting sounds.

I use the Elysia MusEQ. Love the plug...would imagine the outboard is just killer. I've had the Muse EQ for a long time, but I just can't figure out how it works. The black buttons, what are their functions? I'd guess one is to boost, the other to cut, but for some reason, I've never had the time to go and figure out how it works. It's definitely not intuitive!

You can really increase stereo width when in M/S mod with the two level screws (labeled 3)...start raising the right hand screw/Side up a tiny bit and you can bring the side info out a little more. You can overdo it, though.

I have a Clariphonic en route. Wondering if I should add another element to handle low end duties. One problem is I am down to 1RU left on my 4 racks. No room or plans/funds to start another rack. What's good on the bass end, stereo and 1RU? Tall order! I think you might be happy with a Manley Mini-Massive for this. I am. Not hard to find a good used one for around $1500. Yup that's the one on my radar. Time for John story time: In my late teens I was in a band that started to play shows. One of the members was in several bands and already had a rehearsal space set in Chino. It was a huge space built in the backyard of a house. Super nice with plenty of room for a band, their girlfriends, couches, pool table, dj setup etc... after a few months practicing there I met the owner, Ms. Manley herself. I was 19 and knew nothing about gear so I didn't think much other than she is an awesome person. The place was always referred to as "the dojo." It was a great time! I remember my friend telling me she owns a company that makes really expensive speakers haha.

Thanks John. It is a little complicated for me, but I see now how it works. The thing is, it'll take time to learn well, and I almost never want to spend that time with a plug-in. The only thing that I really don't understand is what they mean by special resonance peaks.

John, I tried the mid-side button on the Elysia. I turned the left button 2.4 db. (I think I had it in link mode, so I believe both L&R were working). It was really an improvement, but there was a loss in low end energy, I lowered it to 1.2 db, and popped a little Slate Revival on, and it really made the track more lively, with the focus of the vocal improved. I guess I'll have to mess with the Elysia now, since it did a lovely job first time I really tried to use it.
I remember seeing it on the gear wall at the studio where Alto Music is, (I forget the studio name). It was filled with a wall full of incredible vintage pieces. I mentioned the Elysia to the engineer there, and he said "it's great". They should know, if it wasn't, it wouldn't be on that wall, I guarantee.

I second the Hendy Amps Michelangelo! If I had to have only one Buss processor this would be it...... Just magic on stereo Program and has been used on hundreds of masters over the last couple years.

the Clariphonic is sounding good. I used it on 3 mixes so far and its magic touch is greatly apparent. I had a client in the room and bypassed it during playback and she shouted 'what just happened?!?!' Then switched it back in and all was well again. Interesting how dull the mix sounds without even though just a few weeks back I didn't hear it as being like that. I am mixing through it so that I'm not cranking on individual tracks as much if at all. So far so good.

I wonder if, on stuff like Clariphonic, it wouldn't be a bad idea to just put a piece of tape on it with some marks and use it that way: it's either set to 1, 2, or 3 on each knob and that's it - the switches can be more easily noted in the project or in a text document in the project folder. Then, mix as you always would and patch that thing in half-way through the mix.
I don't have the hardware but I have the plugin. Holy hell, I've never been so easily able to overcook a mix move as I can with Clariphonic. It's exactly what you all say: so smooth you don't realize you're doing great-sounding damage to your mix. DEFINITELY adjust it up then back it off, bypass it, take a break, then switch it back in. You'll know if you need to back it off even more.

I'm going to build a Sontec one of these days. Pultec plugins have been my mainstay. Along with precision EQs from IK Multimedia and PSP. Think Tokyo Dawn Labs might be the next plugin I try.
