i like saxmonsters. those guitars need to be up the middle because they cant hold their own isolated to the sides. i tried and i tried to hide those guitars but i couldnt crack the code. i think the key was tucking the lead back behind the rhythm. mine are slightly panned to no mans land.
good job sax.

entered last night.
listened this morning.
can not believe how bad it is. im so embarrassed someones gonna actually listen to it. the guitars cause me physical pain.
this was the 1st time ive worked on something i didnt track myself. im really curious to hear what others did with these tracks. nothing was working for me except the vocal which was absolutely amazing.

are you testing it in the the rack or with a test jig. had a problem with the test jig once. it took me forever to figure out it wasnt the comp i was working on. had a problem from not cleaning the board before too. even though i use no clean solder. it was not visible anywhere, and i went through and retouched everything, but it still didnt work. then i gave it a good scrubbing and it worked. those are the only solutions i can come up with from my limited knowledge... good luck

kiwi modded juno. you could get a non functioning 106, hs60, or mks-7 for cheap. obviously fixing/modding it wont be a problem for you. that way you can use it straight up in the studio or hook it up to the laptop when you wanna get jiggy with it. plus its analog which IMO is the only reason to use hardsynths.

to be fair. i dont think the dude is a pitchman. just a genuine audio geek. this is what he actually said hed use.
"I'd use BMS 5S117, Vifa XT25BG60-04 and a waveguide. The BMS won't go as low as either the SEAS or the Visaton but distortion is down by over 45dB (0.5%) between 200 and 2500Hz at 110dBspl which is truly exceptional for a 5" driver. It also does 91dB/1W requiring about a quarter to half of the power of either the SEAS or Visaton and necessitates much less padding (or less gain if active as I would use them) for the tweeter. Somebody over at diyaudio measured the Vifas THD in a waveguide, it was down by about 70dB (0.03%) rivalling amp numbers! I would not use a round waveguide but a rectangular one to limit vertical dispersion even further and thus avoiding some of the reflections off the console."
i have diy everything in my studio except monitors. thats why it intrigues me, but this is so far beyond me. i cant even follow what any of you guys are saying. thanks for replys

youre right i guess. the case was half the cost of mine. still though. it takes a days work to build calibrate test etc. plus shipping to chile. the warm la2a is supposedly coming out at $899. the stam is cheaper and comes with keneteks, cinemags and rca's. ?

here are a few quotes from this dude on gs. he has me convinced.
"For starters the Amphions appear to be using cheaper SEAS mid-woof chassis (€60) rather than the more expensive Visaton ones (€95).
"Same size alu-coned woofer in very similar sized box, similar efficiency (86dB v 87dB), Qts (0.38 & 0.35) and resonant frequency (43 & 44Hz) means that the bass response has to be very similar too."
"Both have similar sized round waveguides which will give a similar sonic signature due to almost identical power response especially since the crossover points of both are inevitably in the same region (1600hz & 1700Hz)."
"Visatons use a coated fabric domes rather than a titanium ones which generally are preferable to me since almost every metal dome I have heard so far has some nasty break up modes around 22-24k which may in itself be inaudible but do lead to fatigue in the long run IME."
"SEAS woofers are not bad by any stretch but the Visaton is highly regarded due to its low distortion/colouration and it has nearly twice the linear excursion (5mm v 8.5mm) so the Visaton should have quite a bit more headroom when pushed."
i dont know anything about this stuff. but this dude sounds legit.

i read over on gs a guy who really sounds like he knows what hes talking about compare these www.visaton.com/en/bauvorschlaege/2_wege/studio2/index.html to amphion one15's. he even said they might be better drivers. unfortunately i dont have the capabilities to make the cabinets so i was wondering if i could mod my desk top dayton audios. basically just change the speakers and crossover. will that work? how important is cabinet design? maybe svart can chime in.

When I heard a dozen different WA76's being compared, only the two UREI's bettered the WA76 IMO. All the other clones, even UAD's new model isn't as close to my ears. But yes, I also agree with Randy, if you really want the absolute best, you gotta get ready for some sticker shock. This is one reason I think Warm Audio will get it closer than any other new version or clone, because they keep doing it. Their EQP-1A is another example. Honest question here - I heard the warm EQP-1a was a "miss", not a "hit". I know a lot of guys sold em after jumping in without hearing them. Do you have one, and if so, have you compared with the originals? I'd have bought a pair if I hadn't heard a lot of "meh" comments. As it stands, although not the best, I'd probably go for the AML clone or have Dan D build me a pair when I can afford to "do it right". I don't need any more "pretty nice" EQ's... i thought so. i sold it after about a week. i a/b it against the retro powerstrip and it wasnt even similar. if it cant compare to the retro i doubt it'd come close to an original.... i know danderloo mentioned somewhere he didnt like the retro rendition either. i think i might agree. didnt hate it but im drifting further and further away from outboard eq because of it. i dont think its worth the dac.... the comp on the powerstrip though is the best piece of gear ive ever used.

the ez1073 is the easiest build ive ever done. i dont know if the 1084 is the same as far as coloring book and everything, but if it is its probably even easier.

i think im gonna change my game plan. im gonna start cheap and add tubes/sowters down the rode and give each stage adequate time to get a better understanding of the parts im putting in to these builds.
thanks for the advice

I used Sowter Iron in my point to point build of a Sta Level. I also used really nice tubes. It sounds amazing. Nothing else I have sounds anything like it. It would not be the only compressor I would want but since I have a stash of great comps this one really stands out. It has a very unique tone that makes it very valuable to me. I would be curious to hear how the Edcor TX sounded next to this. Edcor TX are hit and miss. I know they make some good sounding TX for some projects. Usually things like guitar amps, which the Sta Level is similar to so it could be a good fit. I just didn't want to waste my time testing them on this build. I wanted to go all out and build a killer Sta Level for my own personal use. If I ever do another one, maybe I would try the Edcor? It would be a lot cheaper. My guess is they could be even more colored? are you selling the cases?

O.S. on a S.S.D. drive will definitely speed up your computer. I took my custom built I7, 8 core, dual SSD, into my Computer tech guy ( forgot my Password ) and he said it was the fastest computer he'd worked on. It has instant response. i concur. before going ssd i had spent a bunch of money on ram and didnt notice any improvement. since ssd everything is instantaneous. such a big difference. theres no way i can go back. after reading this though im only gonna backup up to disk drives.

you talked me in to the 6386. ill probably go one and one with the trafos. ericn svart. would the sowter in make more of an impact , or would out be better. my thought is clean in color out. so sowter out. i have nothing to base that on though just a theory. thanks.

How much would this total up to using the good stuff? I'm less than a newb when it comes to DIY but I have some esperienced friends. I've always wanted a STA Level. at least a grand. with custom case knobs power trafo etc. could be a lot more... still cheaper than a Retro.
