when I 1st went in the box a few years ago I tried protools. It was pretty intuitive and I picked it up pretty easily having never used a daw before. An engineer friend from Boston encouraged me to try Cubase and it took me longer to figure out but it had some things that PT didnt that I liked, lanes and variaudio are two things I use all the time, and I preferred the built in plugs. I havent switched to version 10 yet but have the latest up to that version and no issues. As someone else mentioned, it has features I haven't used yet as it is deep. And when I say deep, I mean deeeeeeeeep. From the customizations to the midi and scoring features as well as sampling and editing features I am still discovering, its a deep dive daw. Lots of youtube vids, look for Greg Ondo vids and he does a monthly Q and A called club cubase. Tons of support as well as the steinberg forum. Try it, you'll like it. mc

These things are one of my weaknesses...I spent a whole day comparing to the Soyuz SU-013 when I had my last one and ultimately thought any difference was subjective...but reading this thread again makes me want another one. I keep thinking “maybe my last one was futzed up...” Nope, it's doing just fine....

I think the E906 is the one to get and not the 609, it's a fizzy ol' yoke. 609's are fine for live work, saves having extra stands on stage. This. I use e906s all the time. Live and recording. I would not use a 609 unless someone is on a budget and need one for a live show.

That’s one of the earliest I have seen! That’s one of the ones Adam was talking about. I have only seen 2 others without phantom. It should sound HUUUGGGE. it does! Cant wait to try it out on some other sources.

Ok I finally got my hands on it to try out. Posting some pics as well when I can figure out how. I had done some research and many folks had issues with phantom power switch not working for whatever reasons. Well I don’t have to worry about that, there is no phantom power switch! I plugged in an sm7 and sounded great. Had input and output cranked and noted that gain was a bit lower than other pres but still workable. Loved the tone. Then tried my u67 reissue and sounded amazing but a little noisy. Found a compromise between input and output where the buzz wasn’t as noticible but great tones whether input was cranked or not. If never got noticeably distorted, just bigger sounding. I liked the way it made the edges of a raspy Vox sound slightly compressed. I have never had an actual neve pre so I plan to compare it to my Vintech and great river to see how they compare.

for years I used a Fostex D160, and tracked a couple of albums on it thru outboard pres and comps and mixed thru a Sountracs Solo mixer. Then I upgraded to an Alesis HD24 and mixed thru an APB Dynasonics 32.4 (amazing board) to a Masterlink. Great setup that worked for our last album. Then I took the plunge a couple of years ago and got a macbook pro and a MOTU 16a. Haven't looked back since as I am all in the box now. Unlimited tracks? what a concept! Although having limitations certainly does increase your decision making and speeds up ones productivity....

A local school is unloading some gear and a single channel DA Mic pre is available but we have no idea what it is worth. Not a lot (any) online to draw from, there was one ebay listing @ 900.00 but thats it. Thanks, mc Is it his 1272 deal? yes.

I'm using a the MOTU 16A with the 828ES and I really like it. I got the 16A and 828es each when they first came out and did initially have a lot of trouble with the 16A. It got more stable as the drivers improved and I've been using it without issue for over a year now. Pros: The main one: the routing/monitoring flexibility is really fantastic. Being able to duplicate an incoming signal with no latency is essential. I could never go back to monitoring live takes post-DAW. It really makes monitoring easier for the musicians as well. AD/DA conversion sounds great to me. (I had an RME ADI-8 before this and a DIGI002 before that.) The 828ES doubles as a great monitor controller and simply connects to the 16A via a single ethernet cable, giving you 24 channels of conversion. The software mixer has a lot of cool features and allows one to monitor pre or post effects (so you can add some reverb in the singers headphones but still record it dry, for example. That adds a tiny latency to the singer's cans, though, I think). Cons: The routing software is a fucking nightmare. It's very powerful and flexible BUT the UI is almost counter-intuitive. Once you get the hang of it, make notes to yourself because you will forget after so many months and then when you want to redo your patchbay or whatever you'll be back at square one! The updates are a pain in the ass. Maybe due to the way I have 2 devices connected, but I can't just click update. I have to disconnect the devices from each other and drag an actual ethernet cable from my router all the way to the boxes to update them. Updating via USB never seems to work--it just hangs in update mode. (it did work once or twice oddly enough.) Other thoughts: 16A has no volume knob! So keep that in mind if that's gonna be your sole converter. I think the conversion on the 16A is a little better than the 828ES. Though I haven't done scientific tests, that's the general impression I'm left with after using both together for the last 9 months or so. 16a has no volume knob but there is digital gain for each channel. this bit me when one of my inputs was very low and took me a while to find the digital gain to bring it back to unity.

The matrix appears daunting at first but once you get your head around it, it makes sense. When I first got it, I was doing transfers from an HD24 to myu Mac and had to use a combination of analog and optical ins/outs and it was a little tricky but made one call to MOTU and they walked me thru it and it turned out to be easier than I thought. Since them I have it set up for analog ins and outs for tracking and headphone mixes, control room, etc and it works like a charm. Set and forget as someone else mentioned.

for those in this thread that mention using limiters as opposed to compressors on the drums, what models can you suggest? Thanks, mc

Love it. Only negative is the need to connect ethernet when updating so I have never updated it. Never any issues even without updates.

If you decide to go the analog route, the Drawmer MC2.1 is pretty nice. It has just the right amount of i/o and control, for me anyway, and it's really transparent. There's also their new MC3.1 with more features, though I haven't tried it. MC2.1 here as well. I love it and it is a lot of bang for the buck.

I used a stock HD24 for our last two albums thru an APB 32x4 prodesk. Loved it and loved mixing on the board. Could never get the fireport to work on transfers but that wasnt a big deal. Decided to go into the box two years ago and never looked back. Cubase/macbook pro via motu 16a. Quite the learning curve for me having never done computer recording in the last 30 years, but got the hang of it after two months. Although I got used to and actually didnt mind the restraint of 24 tracks, now having unlimited tracks is amazing. My goal is to have 100 background vox on a tune. So far i'm up to 60....

I have never heard an actual pultec. I had a couple of A designs EM-peq 500 series. I used one mostly on kick for the cut/boost effect on the low end. Quick and easy kick drum sound. When I got the KT I put it on the kick, same sound that I was getting with the A designs. Not only did it just get the job done, it gave me exactly what I was looking for, at a fraction of the price. Sold the A designs and got a bunch of cash to buy more schtuff....
