A local school is unloading some gear and a single channel DA Mic pre is available but we have no idea what it is worth. Not a lot (any) online to draw from, there was one ebay listing @ 900.00 but thats it. Thanks, mc

You could look at search older BAE etc. stuff for similars, or Mercenary, Vintech etc.

Single Ch is a real NEVE PCB inside $1K- $1.4K BUT the PSU’s with these are not all that great unlike the later 2ch with Dan’s own PCB so while I have seen singles listed as high as $1.5 I would not pay more than $1K thinking I’m probably going to want a better PSU. The transformers are going to be worth every penny even if it needs a recap, ask Vincent about the magic of his latter 2 ch, in the words of Trump the sound is HUUUGHE!

It has definitely become my go to vocal preamp, particularly with tube mics. I still lean on tube pres for my FET mics for more color. When I compared the DA to my UAD Unison Neve 1073 I finally realized why people go nuts for a true 1073 sound. It seems to have the low mids of a tube preamp with an open top end. Very cool sounding pre. From stuff I’ve heard online and my experience with the DA I’d say it’s closer to the BAE sound than the AMS Neve sound.

So, it is not a clone. But rather a cobling up of old parts.

The version Vincent has and my 4 units are very much clones, but they do use Vintage Neve transformers. The PCB’s are of Dans own design and the parts are more modern. As I said earlier in this thread the single channel unit the OP has and some earlier units used old Neve parts as did early BAE amongst others, these are not as reliable but many still desire them because they are “real Neve”.

Ah, that looks familiar! When I lived in Berkeley I spent a fair amount of time hanging out at Dan's little shop, Rose Street Guitars, sadly gone now...

If I'm not mistaken he's relocated to the LA area. I could be mistaken, as I'm now about 60 miles north of SF and Berkeley so I don't get down to those parts much.
EDIT: Yes, he appears to be in the LA area.

Ok I finally got my hands on it to try out. Posting some pics as well when I can figure out how. I had done some research and many folks had issues with phantom power switch not working for whatever reasons. Well I don’t have to worry about that, there is no phantom power switch! I plugged in an sm7 and sounded great. Had input and output cranked and noted that gain was a bit lower than other pres but still workable. Loved the tone. Then tried my u67 reissue and sounded amazing but a little noisy. Found a compromise between input and output where the buzz wasn’t as noticible but great tones whether input was cranked or not. If never got noticeably distorted, just bigger sounding. I liked the way it made the edges of a raspy Vox sound slightly compressed. I have never had an actual neve pre so I plan to compare it to my Vintech and great river to see how they compare.

That’s one of the earliest I have seen! That’s one of the ones Adam was talking about. I have only seen 2 others without phantom. It should sound HUUUGGGE.

Cant wait to try it out on some other sources. I would tell you to try it on drums, but that’s dangerous. Drums and what it dose for the TLM103 are what led me to end up with four of the two channel units like Vincent’s. I mean you don’t need 8ch of Neve pre to make a great record but it certainly helps😁

When I first got my unit it was making a lot of noise too. I took it to a local tech. He said it was a number of solder joints through out the unit and resoldered the internal wiring. It sounds great now. It’s not a quiet preamp by any means, but it no longer has a hum or static. I agree with you michaelcleary about wishing it had a little more gain. I also wish it had an impedance switch. I believe it’s set to high Z (1200 ohms). Maybe ericn can clarify. That’s my guess based on the sonic quality of my other Nevish preamps.

Yeah, it’s not the quietest thing ever, I have always used it with a console so the limited gain has never been a problem ( how many times have I said every body needs some kind of little mixer for all kinds of utility work). From memory I think you are right or close on the impendance or pretty damn close.

The honest answer is that it's worth whatever the lowest recent sale price you can find on Ebay/CL/Reverb is.
