Hey chase one of the ua mods loaded 9 on mountain lion "FYI: Just installed v9.0.0 on Mountain Lion 10.8.5 with a Silverface TB1 and a Satellife FW and opened a current session. Happy to report that all runs smoothly" Thanks!! I am still using Mountain Lion! Happy as heck that the SVT plugs have been stepped up to Unison status.

I got a free satellite when they did this last year. Easy. Buy the Apollo and register. They send you a Quad Satellite. Last time it was a little slow to get but I am hoping they learned from their mistake and have plenty ready to ship this offering. As far as the conversion goes, no problems here. I love my Apollo and the UAD platform. I have been a user for years. I strongly advise you do some google research and ear to ear listening on your own. Go to the website and peruse the tutorials and videos including sound files. There will always be users who are dissatisfied no matter what but I am a happy customer. The Thunderbolt format has made recording so much easier for me. The Unison plug ins just get better and better. Hello, did you have the SF Apollo and can you compare it to other converters? Is the DAC improved or do you use a separate DAC for monitoring? Do you feel a SF to BF upgrade would be better than adding a separate DAC like a Dangerous Source? I always wanted a Avocet but it's as pricey as BF Apollo I upgraded from SilverFace Apollo. The BlackFace has the Hi Z Unison and a few other BF only features that I like. The free Satellite made the upgrade a no brainer. I bought my Apollo from ProAudioStar as 'B' Stock but it was brand new in box. That move alone saved me $750. I am happy with the Apollo and have no desire for other conversion as of yet, however I mix to a variety of sources including a Tascam DA3000 and reel to reel. Somewhere down the road, sure i may explore million dollar conversion but right now the Apollo makes beautiful music!!

My experience with Music Group has been positive so far.
They have an eBay store and sell their own refurbished products at a deep discount.
All come with a 3 YEAR WARRANTY!!!!
I bought their XR18 Air which is pretty much a stage box that operates via tablet or laptop controlling a virtual mixer with processing and effects. 16 Midas preamps.
This thing has really impressed the hell outa me. Dead quiet and the effects are super lush.
Behringer name is turning around.
Can't find a price on this Pultec though...

How does the free satellite promotion work? veggieryan why do you consider the conversion subpar? Also compared to what other conversion? I got a free satellite when they did this last year. Easy. I will try to post 2 tracks here from Soundcloud.
First is my Upton 251 with GE 5 Star GL6072. Recorded with AML ez1073 with EQ out. Direct to Apollo.
Second is my Telefunken USA U47 with original Neumann M7 capsule reskinned red Theirsch and a VF14M tube. Recorded with AML ez1073. EQ out. Direct to Apollo.

I will post more later. Same song but close proximity to capsule.
Please excuse singing. Very rough vocal to a song I wrote. I sang over a 2 track like Karaoke but the music is obviously missing.

I emailed Upton a month ago to know if they would sell bodies or capsules individually, and I did not even get an answer. Not cool. I have to admit that communication with Dallas can be spotty at times. The best way for instant gratification is to call on the phone. I know it's old fashioned but I have always gotten to speak directly to Dallas and he is a great guy to deal with.

I would highly recommend the Mullard 12at7. Found it to be much smoother. I saw the post where you got this earlier in the thread. I have given this much thought but decided I wanted to find a GE 5 Star to go with my Upton. Even though Dallas shipped and recommended the ElectroHarmonix I want to stay true to the traditional tube in a 251. I had to audition quite a few 6072 before I found one quiet enough. The GL6072 in my Upton was a lucky hit. To me it is very smooth and even on all the frequencies. I found the EH to be a little bottom heavy. I never realized how important a good tube is in a tube mic until I started looking for a suitable 5 Star.

I am fixin to commence recording with my Upton 251. My Upton shipped with an ElectroHarmonix tube. I acquired a GE 5 Star GL6072 that is damn quiet and sounds great. I will be doing comparison files first. They will be my U47 with VF14M tube and the 251 with GE and EH tube. I will also compare proximity effect with both mics and tubes. I am currently using an Apollo direct but have access to 2 channels of AML ez1073, Mercury M72, TAB V78M, Langevin 5116, CAPI VP28 and Demeter tube pre. My thinking is the Apollo preamps direct in. However they ALL sound good. The 1073 might be my next choice. Any requests or preferences while I am doing these tests? This mic kicks ass. Not to derail this post or diminish the important of your testing process, but rather to add context... Can you please share more details about your U47? Original? Neumann or telefunken? Long or short body? Capsule relapped by whom? Serviced by? Recapped by whom? Those sorts of things, please. I was going to supply that info with the files but at your request: When Telefunken USA first started they offered their U47 with your choice of long or short body, reskinned vintage M7 or K47 capsule and VF14, VF14M, EF14 or Nuvistor tube. I saved a pdf of an old webpage ad for my own records. Mine is a long body, Thiersch red reskinned vintage M7 capsule and VF14M tube with an early Oliver Archut 'custom' transformer. It is one of their first offerings and I have used it for years. I would love to compare my Upton to another 251 if any one in the Boston area has one. Meanwhile the Upton next to the U47 should be an interesting experiment. Read more: realgearonline.com/thread/5469/upton-microphones-ela-251?page=20#ixzz4Mp7ZtVLo

I have a couple of mics of Shannon's...love them. Loved the replica body on the Upton. Shannon's was still in the building stage when I had the money to pull on the Upton. I also figured that if I didn't love the Upton Capsule, I could have Shannon tweak, but the Upton is really really great! Amen to that. Matter of fact I like the sound of your Upton very much. If you do have the high end tweaked be very careful! I am digging the way it represents all of the frequencies.

1) Jeff's Vintage 251 - thick and gooey, handles transients with ease 2) Sal's Vintage 250 - little less bottom end than Jeff's (I believe this is Shannon's capsule) 3) ADK 251 modded by Shannon - really surprisingly balanced. 4) Upton 251 - Mids are totally there, little smaller on bottom than Jeff's. Much more top than the others (which can be dialed out, but haven't decided yet) 5) CV4 mod - little honkier than the rest to me Would you please identify where each mic is in the pic? Thanks

In early 2011 the Targus ACH81US 7-Port USB 2.0 Desktop Hub with Audio Pass-Through had excellent reviews so I bought one.
It's been in use since then and I have never had a problem.

Is that a hand written number 10 on the tape stuck to the mic case? What does that mean?
Are there any serial number type stamps on the actual mic body? Thanks!

Gut pics required. Never know what you're getting with these home made consoles. Should not be called an RCA mixer, that's a huge stretch. Doesn't mean it's not great. Sinful at the least to leave out shots of the innards!

dallasupton, if you are still following this thread I have a question. I chose B and C and then found out C was yours (Upton) and B was your vintage 251. I thought C was a dead ringer for B. Is there a version of your different creations you prefer? Are you trying to match your 251 or add a little extra? Thanks

I have a one room studio with a semi isolated CR. I have been using Shure 535 in ear monitors with 3M hearing protection head muffs over top. Between the great isolation from the IEM's alone and the extra buffer from 3M I have been able to position mics in front of everything including loud guitar cabs with great success. I know the sound of my IEM's pretty well (the Shures sure sound great to me!) so the translation is dead on for playback.
The only extra step for improvement would be a good wireless transmitter to eliminate the headphone cable. Right now they are driven by Benchmark headphone amplification.
