Who's using one that works well? I got so tired of plugging and unplugging things to get things to work, I went back to the Windows DAW. Trying to get the Mac working again....I've got a 10 port hub, mostly full....and the audio interface plugged directly into the MacBook....and the TB to DVI to the monitor.....
It occurs to me that a lot of the frustration and instability is around this hub.....so, I went looking for other options. The slickest by far is teh Sonnet thing that is a Thunderbolt "dock" of sorts--optical drive, two SSD bays, gigabit ethernet, HDMI, and I think 6 USB 3 jacks. Audio, too, but couldn't care less.....anyhoo....$400+SSD(s).....so, it's not an inexpensive solution compared to $30-50 USB3 hubs.
But, I'm wondering with all the mac folks around--someone's got to have some known good hubs. It's not like Apples have had MANY USB jacks for a while....

For small Mac accessories I have always found that what ever OWC/ macsales.com is selling to be the best bet, far better than the Apple Store or anyone else!

I use a CalDigit Thunderbolt Station 2 with this stuff on the ports;
TB2 - MacBook Pro 15" 2.5GHz quad Core i7 TB2 - MOTU 16A HDMI - LG 34" UltraWide monitor eSATA - Anker USB3/eSATA drive dock USB3 - Lite-On USB2 DVD burner USB3 - iLok2 LAN - Audient ASP2802 Dual Layer Control console
Pro Tools 12 and Logic Pro X both work smoothly with just the one Thunderbolt connection to the MBP.

I have been using a 5+2powered USB hub for a couple years now. I can't even find it on NewEgg anymore, but it was $20.

In early 2011 the Targus ACH81US 7-Port USB 2.0 Desktop Hub with Audio Pass-Through had excellent reviews so I bought one.
It's been in use since then and I have never had a problem.

I guess I should've specified USB3. I've never had any issue with 2.0 hubs, but that's because it didn't have the bandwidth to DO a lot maybe--I used them to hold a couple dongles and mouse or something simple....side note--mine apparently died last night (spontaneously no power on), so I just repatched the Windows box back into service. I'm going over works in progress now to do the various IO remappings. Funny, I'm not a TapeOp reader on a regular basis, but a local friend (and fellow "Mac guy") told me about this in a recent issue: tapeop.com/columns/end-rant/115/While not 100% related....it IS....I've honestly never had to use so much external shit. I'm not "a laptop guy"....never had been. The irony is--in shopping for Apple desktop solutions....there really all laptops without a battery now. I might need to build a new Windows box while I can still install Win7.

So, I'm curious how you find that....the thing that makes me curious, is that it's pretty expensive....AND I've never heard of that brand....I'm just curious where buying that comes from....

I'm sure it wasn't that expensive when I got it. If I Google HooToo usb hub, the top link brings me to Amazon and shows this one as the #1 best seller. www.amazon.com/HooToo-9-Port-Charging-Transfer-iPhone/dp/B00FR795WAI imagine that the older one that I have was also the #1 seller on Amazon at the time of purchase.

Gotcha. Just number one seller on Amazon.
Interesting the connecting the iLok as needed....and I assume you're using wifi for network? The two major "keep plugging and unplugging" were the USB Ethernet and iLok2....though my USB keyboard would need it periodically, too. I had drives that would work in some ports but not others....and since literally everything worked as advertised plugged directly to the Macbook, I assume the issue is the hub. either in principle or the specific unit....thus my asking.

Yep, wifi here and the iLok travels wherever the computer does.
