Sounds great JohnKenn - both sound nice - but love the Upton - sounds awesome on your voice. Heck - you'd sound great on any mic.

I am fixin to commence recording with my Upton 251.
My Upton shipped with an ElectroHarmonix tube. I acquired a GE 5 Star GL6072 that is damn quiet and sounds great. I will be doing comparison files first. They will be my U47 with VF14M tube and the 251 with GE and EH tube. I will also compare proximity effect with both mics and tubes.
I am currently using an Apollo direct but have access to 2 channels of AML ez1073, Mercury M72, TAB V78M, Langevin 5116, CAPI VP28 and Demeter tube pre. My thinking is the Apollo preamps direct in. However they ALL sound good. The 1073 might be my next choice.
Any requests or preferences while I am doing these tests? This mic kicks ass.

Not to derail this post or diminish the important of your testing process, but rather to add context... Can you please share more details about your U47? Original? Neumann or telefunken? Long or short body? Capsule relapped by whom? Serviced by? Recapped by whom? Those sorts of things, please.

I would highly recommend the Mullard 12at7. Found it to be much smoother.

I was going to supply that info with the files but at your request: When Telefunken USA first started they offered their U47 with your choice of long or short body, reskinned vintage M7 or K47 capsule and VF14, VF14M, EF14 or Nuvistor tube. I saved a pdf of an old webpage ad for my own records. Mine is a long body, Thiersch red reskinned vintage M7 capsule and VF14M tube with an early Oliver Archut 'custom' transformer. It is one of their first offerings and I have used it for years. I would love to compare my Upton to another 251 if any one in the Boston area has one. Meanwhile the Upton next to the U47 should be an interesting experiment. Read more: realgearonline.com/thread/5469/upton-microphones-ela-251?page=20#ixzz4Mp7ZtVLo

I would highly recommend the Mullard 12at7. Found it to be much smoother. I saw the post where you got this earlier in the thread. I have given this much thought but decided I wanted to find a GE 5 Star to go with my Upton. Even though Dallas shipped and recommended the ElectroHarmonix I want to stay true to the traditional tube in a 251. I had to audition quite a few 6072 before I found one quiet enough. The GL6072 in my Upton was a lucky hit. To me it is very smooth and even on all the frequencies. I found the EH to be a little bottom heavy. I never realized how important a good tube is in a tube mic until I started looking for a suitable 5 Star.

I emailed Upton a month ago to know if they would sell bodies or capsules individually, and I did not even get an answer. Not cool.

I have to admit that communication with Dallas can be spotty at times. The best way for instant gratification is to call on the phone. I know it's old fashioned but I have always gotten to speak directly to Dallas and he is a great guy to deal with.

OK, will give it a shot. I don't expect them to say yes, actually, but just to answer something would be elegant.

Ericn said,"I also would like to see more people developing some new flavors of LDC.
Well, I have one suggestion, Blackspade makes a UM17R/B. It's been updated many times and is quite remarkable now, especially at its price range. They are transparent about parts, and many mics that cost 2-3X more have almost the same parts. The UM17R sounds like a blend of a U47 and M49, closer to a U47, I think, but still, a blend. And it sounds great, and it sounds like itself, not an imitation. It excels at detail that makes vocals stand out without excessive EQ.

I'll have to post a snip from a song I just finished. Vocal was the best I've ever recorded. I mean, just fantastic. Wasn't me btw lol.

I will try to post 2 tracks here from Soundcloud.
First is my Upton 251 with GE 5 Star GL6072. Recorded with AML ez1073 with EQ out. Direct to Apollo.
Second is my Telefunken USA U47 with original Neumann M7 capsule reskinned red Theirsch and a VF14M tube. Recorded with AML ez1073. EQ out. Direct to Apollo.

I will post more later. Same song but close proximity to capsule.
Please excuse singing. Very rough vocal to a song I wrote. I sang over a 2 track like Karaoke but the music is obviously missing.

Both are high end. Both sound great. I'd say it depends on what you're looking for in a track. Sometime the 1st choice flat isn't as good as the second choice flat when put into tracks.

He apologized, as he's having too much to do. And I must admit I like the phone better than the email as well. Thanks, guys.

Hi All ! I'm Matteo from France, this is my first post here, my english is not the best, please be indulgent ! We are working on an Telefunken Ela M 251 mic build with original/vintage parts (see picture) : - Original AKG CK12 brass capsule - Nos Nib Telefunken AC701k tube - Original Nos Haufe T14/1 transformer - Telefunken USA reissue headbasket and lower chrome ring (bought 8 years ago @ TFK USA when it was still possible) - Aputis 251 capsule holder from GroupDIY We're actually searching an option for the body tube, some mechanical inside parts and output connector/swivel mount. I wrote several mails to Dallas @ Upton microphones whithout any reply. Do you know If Dallas can sell the Upton 251 body and some mechanical parts ? Maybe a RGO member have already buy from him and have some informations to share ? Your help would be greatly appreciated ! Thanks, Matteo

Hi thanks !
I already wrote to Shannon to know if his 251 body tube is an exact replica of the original mic. I'm waiting for his answer, but as a first step I prefer the Upton body and swivel mount that seems fit my Telefunken USA parts.
Best, M

I saw a used Brass Ck 12 on either eBay or reverb for $800! At this point unless I knew the seller I wouldn't believe any Brass CK12 to be NOS !

If you care about the finished result, the only way to accomplish what you need is to send your existing parts to someone, have them measure everything, and then produce custom matching parts.
