The Bock 251 is very nice! I have had three different makes of this similar mic. The 151, the 241, & 251. I tried other approaches and came a little short of what I like, but then again, you can always dial things in and tweak, but I just don't have the time right now to do that.

I put a 5 Star GL6072 in mine. That is all I did. Best I have ever used? Can't answer that. I have a U47 that I love. I have Gefell UM70 that I love. And I have others that I love too! But if you have decided on a 251 style then it would be great if you found someone near you with an Upton. I am happy with mine and feel no need to tweak other than maybe another tube. The Electro Harmonix makes it a tad darker. I have not tried any other brand yet. Good luck. Yeah - some people might love the Upton stock. It had a beautiful top end, great all around. I could just collapse it...hence my replacement search. My suggestion to people that want a 251 is to start with the Upton (at my astronomically good price), try it and if you don’t like it, replace the capsule. You’re still $6000 below the Telefunken price. Here is something I am not clear about. I thought that these capsules could be 'tuned' to customize desired characteristics? If that is true then why not send the mic back to Dallas for a tune up? Or am I not fully understanding that whole process?

My experience has been that I can bring out an un-eq-able zing in many, many mics. It's that harshness in the mic when it's really pushed, that you just can't EQ out. Well, not true, you can EQ out, but then you've taken away the top end. I chased that rabbit with the Wunder mics...tried different pico-farad values which measures capacitance and can tell how bright or dark the mics is. (I'm sure that's not a scientific explanation, but just condensing.) Anyway, I could never get one that worked for me. Same with the Miktek CV4. And others. Those mics sound fantastic on tons of people...just not on me. So - I have one of the best capsules guys in the world right around the corner from me. Dallas is 800 miles away and $100 shipping. Shannon and I talked about the sound I was looking for and he's tweaked and tweaked - and to me - hit it out of the park. Also, at the price I can do, you would have plenty to put in whatever capsule you like...or just pocket the money and use the stock capsule which is bad ass too.
