I'll try and get these uploaded to Soundcloud for those that don't want to download the PT files. we.tl/HQaemTcfMlHere is my order of preference: 1) Jeff's Vintage 251 - thick and gooey, handles transients with ease 2) Sal's Vintage 250 - little less bottom end than Jeff's (I believe this is Shannon's capsule) 3) ADK 251 modded by Shannon - really surprisingly balanced. 4) Upton 251 - Mids are totally there, little smaller on bottom than Jeff's. Much more top than the others (which can be dialed out, but haven't decided yet) 5) CV4 mod - little honkier than the rest to me

Man that Upton is haunting me. Thanks for this. I've been thinking about this a lot lately... do yo think that running the Upton through a nice hardware pultec to gently cut out some treble is as good as having the mic internals changed to remove some of the treble? I'm finding that sometimes I really like having that treble there to work with from the mic...

those old 251's sound incredible! seems like you guys had a lot of fun. I wish I could have thrown in my DIY version to see how it stands up against the real deal. I used an ADK capsule in mine.

I'm not totally sure I want to take the top out...you can roll off the top easily with any low pass filter. Honestly, in a mix, with the vintage mics you would probably take out a little of the bottom and add a little top...

Listening to the clips I REALLY like the lack of sibilance in the modded CV4...

Listening to the clips I REALLY like the lack of sibilance in the modded CV4... Yeah until you eq and compress it. It's just darker to begin with, IMO.

I'm finding I don't need to add any top on the vocal channel but the 2bus eq is adding some 12k and air band stuff.

You're hearing a cv4 that Shannon converted to one of his builds...with the brown body. The other cv4 isn't in the shootout.

I'd also like to add that Shannon's Custom 251 and the Upton look fantastic. Excellent machine work on both.

I wonder how the ADK was sounding before Shannon's mod. Cause it stands up really well ! Is it the Z-shop thing ?
