Well I finally got my hands on a RCA 44bx. Thanks goes to the Stephen Sank for doing a splendid job of servicing it. Did a quick test/ Now I see what people are liking about these. The Stager Sr1a has a bigger bottom end but it does not capture the sweet upper end of the 44BX. Infact I have yet found a Ribbon to capture the sweeter upper end of this mic. I thought the bottom end was going to be huge but after having the Stager SR1a nothing comes as close as that mic to a massive bottom end. RCA 44BX I think I am in love. I was actually quite surprised at how close the Cloud 44a comes to sounding similar to this. I think if you had a handful of 44bx's in a line up and put the Cloud 44a in there, you would be hard pressed to pick it out in the line up.
Looking forward to spending more time together with this, I should not say that too loud with my wife just behind me !

Quick test the Soyuz su-013 is just a little brighter in the top end by a smidgeon and the bottom seems a little rounder - blooms a little more. The Warbler 127 Flat C just has that little hint of plastic sound compared to the SU-013. My goodness it is only a fraction of "plasticy" sound. There's a good $450 price difference between these mics. You would not be disapointted with the Warbler 127 C if you were looking to get into the KM84 territory. I also found the Soyuz a fair but hotter then the Warbler. The Miktek c5 is just a tad softer again then the Warbler and the Soyuz. sounds very similar to the warbler with just a hint more plasticy sounding (slight crunchy maybe a better descriptive word) then the Warbler 127 C Flat . When comparing it to the Suyoz after a while you can hear that the Soyuz is a little warmer and a bit bigger in sound. It also has nice highs but has a little more pronounced low mids. I think I like it best. Now I should go and find my Beyer MC930's to compare them against that mic. So the end result is, if you are on a tight budget the Warbler is a great option. I like it better then the Miktek C5. Nothing Scientific was carried out here, just plugging the mics into the same channel and speaking and singing a phrase.

For just on AUS $360 i took the plunge and ordered a 127 c flat. Having owned a km84 and a soyuz 013 i think i may be in a good position to comment when it arrives. BTW i did not find the soyuz su-013 sounded the same as the km84. It does maintain quite a reasonable off axis tone to on axis. I found surprisingly that my Miktek C5 straight on the source sounded closer to my km84 then the soyuz su-013. But the Miktek does not have as good as an off axis sound. Both the su-013 and the C5 were a tad brighter them the km84. Lets see how the 3U 127 c goes when it arrives.

I was going to start a new thread but I'll just post this here. I used my r84 on sleigh bells ($30 Meinl) yesterday and the sound, to me, is glorious. Kind of a dark preamp as well. The Sebatron Axis 200VU with NOS Mullards that are fairly dark compared to the stock JJs. No EQ or comp. Just the R84 1.5 ft away from the bells on axis. app.box.com/s/y4b03nx6jhvra2zb12huhse6g1i1enupSounds like Sleigh bells to me. Captures a bit of the room sound as well.

I bought a gz67fet some time back. I did not fall in love with it like i thought. Mind you it does the job but its not like some other 67ish mics i have. I also bought a Warbler MK1d and whilst it is in the same similar sound terriotory of my older 1970 U87 (which i should never have sold) i thought it was great value for money but a little lacking against the real deal. So yes you do pay for what you get.

looking for another compressor. Just wondering from users if there is enough difference between these two. Just general tracking duties for the moment, with a view getting 2 x for mIxes in the end. not looking for something too coloured that changes the sound of your instrument but looking for a colour that adds to your sound in a reasonable gentle way but can also be transparentish or can also be used heavy handed.

I just love compressors. And now that there seems to be a great special on the Liverpool model it has me salivating. I only have one style of vari-mu compressor at the moment and am very tempted to try this one. Are there any users out there? And by looking at the product pictures i cant help feeling that this may be a Chinese made unit even though it has no place of manufacture on the back of the promo pics. Any real life experience input would be appreciated.

the dbx162sl was a very nice stereo compressor. The purple faced one . I really enjoyed using that one while i had. What a beast thAt was. Not sure if they still make them. But they are only just over your budget mark and i found them useful for both tracking and mixing through. I sort of miss that one and am tempted to get another one at some stage.

The sr1a is definetely bigger then The SR2N. It has a bigger low end and more up present in your face soound when closer to the source then the SR2N. I think i want to find a ribbon somewhere in betweeen these. I have a couple more Ribbons on order so i guess i could soon find which i es i am keeping and which ones i will sell. You can definetly tell the higher craftmanship that comes with the sr1a. Its a thing of beauty.

Well i just took possession of the massive Stager SR-1a ribbon mic. This mic is a beast. Weighs 3.6kg in the wooden box. wow that wooden box is very special. Loved the burned in logo and retro look. and the padding inside is great. Awesome way to not only build but properly store a ribbon mic. I gave it a quick test out against the SR-2n and the differences were not small. The extra weight that this sr1a in the sound is very noticeable. Man that Proximity Effect is huge on the sr1a. Instant 1950' s radio sound. super quiet with no hiss was also a bonus. It does seems that the Alnico ribbon mic needs a little more juice to push it then the neo sr2n model. I found i could get a more flattering top end sound out of the sr2n then the sr1a but then you really missed the super low end of the sr2a. Is all that low end just purely - proximity effect? or is it also due to the massive Alnico magnets? The SR1a had a very more in your face up present sound then compared to the Sr2n which i really like. made the sr2n sound like a distant mic. But it did look like the ribbon assemblies of both mics were extremely similar. But yes they do sound very different. And like usual you go away thinking - now if i can only find a ribbon mic that sits in between these two models. oh well i have a nice vintage RCA Variacoustic (precursor to the RCA 77) coming back from service that has been sitting for a while. Maybe that might be the in between model. Anyway this from just a quick test today on vocals. Will look forward to running them through there paces shortly. are there any other users out there of the sr1a? Would love to compare it to the big daddy RCA 44. Someday that RCA 44 will be mine

Soyuz SU-013 mic. Very nice wooden box. I love the paper work that comes with it. Nice to have all the business cards and photos of the people who worked on my mic. Now that I feel I personally know them all, do I have to send them a Birthday Card?

Daking was awesome. Diagnosed and Replaced my power supply on my faulty unit after years of use then shipped the power supply to Australia for free. They were helpful every step of the way. I love Daking.

Soyuz SU-013 Okay I jumped on the bandwagon and bought one of these. I own a have owned a few SDC like the km84, km184, Beyer MC930 UM70 and other variants and cheaper models. I just did a quick test on my brand new 013 and was wondering if my impressions are similar to others. After Running it through a EZ1290 Neve clone preamp I have found the sound of the 013 not so much like the KM84 as I first initially thought. The 013 is clear very clear on the top. like super clear and clean but not brittle but maybe only small steps away from that I imagine. It does have some low end bit notlike the Neumann KM84 and it does have some mids but it sounds like the top end of the mids - low highs are fairly strong on this mic. I like that it has a tighter pattern then my Km84 and I like that it maintains the same sound a little off axis like the KM84. This mic does not need much juice to make it work so I understand why it ships with a -10db pad (which took me a little while to work what this extra thing is). I am looking forward to pairing it up with some of my lower gain tube pres I have I think it may be a great combo. And maybe see what other darker pres I have and see how that works. I grabbed the closet SDC to me which was a Miktek PM5 to compare. I tell you the PM5 sounds just a little hazy but only a bit when directly on the source in comparison. The differences are very small directly on. But the differences become larger the further off-axis you are to the source. PM5 fades away to not so nice. But as a cheaper mic at the time of purchase the Miktek is a great performer versus value. I will have to dig out my Beyer MC930's and do some comparisons as I just love those. I think they have been my favourite KM84 styled mics over the years but still do thee own thing. The Soyuz 013 does not like close vocals without a screen. Plenty of plosives where as the PM5. MC930's has no problems with these. But this is not how i generally record. I think mic positioning will be interesting with the Soyuz 013 as it seems to exhibit a tighter pattern then my other SDC's and the Km84. So does this all sound familiar for 013 users? Or has my multiple Coffees tipped over the edge today?
